It's just the way it is, I'm obviously not an expert on this but it's an attempt to improve their ratings and garner a wider audience. Some people may not approve of the language used in Kendrick's songs, but it's mostly to keep it "child friendly" whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean these days. Children are easy to captivate, you can get them to watch anything. Kinda fucked up but it's the truth.

      6 years later.....
Today, TPAB has a substantive, fact based argument as one of, if not THE greatest album of all time. It's surpassed my personal favorites in the past year or so. (Blueprint 1 was previously the "newest addition", so it's not an easy top 5 to crack).
This album belongs next to those we historically cherish, whether its "Songs in the Key of Life" or Led Zeppelin's debut album. Or Abbey Road.
And that's all while still digesting the complexities, and most honest/personal body of work that he's released, in Mr. Morale. I don't think most appreciate how fortunate we are to witness this era. He's on a short list for G.O.A.T. already, and might even have an argument at this point, after the Pulitzer. The jury is probably still out, there.
Play TPAB and Mr. Morale back to back. It really feels like a great follow up when put next to one another. But damn this video makes me miss the TPAB era of Kendrick. Especially in his live show.

+Nd Oheri proves you're either a dumbass or you can't understand what a non comparison is because they're two completely different types of artist. Its a matter of preference, its about what you're into or in the mood for. For instance, sometimes I'm in the mood for Kendrick music and sometimes I'm in the mood for Drake's. Both are tremendous artist.

These motherfuckers make it so hard to find Kendrick Lamar’s 2016 performances.... at least his SNL one isn’t hard to find but still this shit right here??? Elevated Kendrick Lamar to another stratosphere as an artist. That’s why I appreciate TPAB so much. He took his performances, videos, and artistry to a new level.

Lamar's work sounds to me like the beginning of a whole new category of hip-hop that doesn't have a name yet. I wouldn't be surprised to hear him called a "founder" of something 10 years from now. Whether you like him or not, you've got to admit that he's very musically ambitious. He knows his roots, but he's cutting a new path. Respect.
His free form timing has deep roots in jazz, and there's a little bit of experimental avant-garde art music spliced in. Those two are part of what's now considered "high culture," whereas rap is thought to be low. He's showing that they can be mixed and come out as art that is both popular and sophisticated. No small feat there.
The foundation that Nicki Minaj is tearing down on one side, Kendrick Lamar is building upon on another.

+Sancho Quixote Great assessment. I've never been a big fan of rap and hip hop, but I am enamored by Kendrick's music and performance style. Perhaps this is the new creative genre that you speak of, which is very attractive to music and performance artists, and fans of all styles & categories of art. Kendrick is a Gemini, like me, & obviously highly creative. A true artist!

The bars at 3:10 timestamp about rappers hiring ghostwriters (bottom bunk in a 2 man cell). It kinda seems like Kendrick mimics drake’s speech/rap patterns in the way he spits those bars. & the criticism fits w the ghostwriting insults he’s lobbed at drake in the 2024 beef. So ppl are theorizing he was subtly dissing drake way back then
