When I was border shopping in Flensburg, Germany last spring I found some XPS URSA hard foamboards in a Bauhaus near the Fördepark shopping mall.
Those are perfect for terrain builds and easily carved with tools.
    Bought 5 pcs 125 cm x 60 cm x 40 mm (7.5 euros/each) and 1 pcs 125 cm x 60 cm x 20 mm (3.5 euro) - total: 41 euros, or £35.42
Best thing - they fitted perfectly in my car in the gap between the front seats and the rear seat - with 50 mm to spare in width 🤣

I work construction... at almost any given time, there's enough off-cuts of the 2" pink board in the dumpster to fill a pick-up bed. I use this stuff for everything, and I probably have enough above my garage for two lifetimes.

In the US, the pink foam board found at Home Depot and Lowes is basically the same stuff. You can get in 1" and 2" thickness and a 4'x8' sheet is like $30-$50. They usually will sell 2'x2' boards for about $15.

Depending on the Home Depot, I have found 4'x4' sections for $15-$20. But then if you plan to reduce that 1" thick piece to 1/2" you will need a decent foam cutter......which I do not have.

I'm in the UK and I've been searching for a couple of years for a cheap foam to use, visiting skips and building sites and trying out various foams.
The foil backed white and cream coloured stuff can be used to a degree but don't use it with a hot wire cutter because the fumes are highly toxic, don't ask me how I know.
I have found a pink foam that is the best so far, works well with a hot wire cutter, is great for carving and glues well with PVA. The bloke I got it from said he'd used it for underfloor insulation and the brand name is IKO Enertherm XPS Extra Roofboard.
