Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was conferred the highest honour by making him the president of Sahitya Sabha in 1993.
He was one of the leading author / poets of Assam and has to his credit more than one thousand lyrics and more than fifteen major books on short stories, essays, travelogues, poems and children's rhymes.

I Still remember that wonderful evening probably in the late 1974 or 75 at one of my aunt's house where t Sir Dr Bhupen Hazarika had come over in the evening and sang quite a lot of songs and we were all mesmerised. Along with him I also had the golden opportunity to sing a song - probably it was one of the most precious moments of my life - my deepest regards & honour to the legend.
