    Muscle memory is very real.... I had to take a year off the gym due to an injury that started causing blood cloths. I lost a lot of muscle, from about 215lbs to low 180s. I am 6'4 btw, to put in perspective how low that is for me. Within 2 months of working out again, I got back up to 205lbs. Within 4-5 months I felt as bigger and stronger as before. Its incredible how it works, because on my first workout back I felt like I was working out as a complete beginner. I felt weak, nauseated, low endurance, and in a matter of months, I was as strong as ever.

    Finally, someone gets it. Muscles don't have the capacity to remember. Only the brain does that. What the muscles do is adapt to the stress that has been put on them. I used to be able to run a 2:52 marathon and now I'm not even close. Not because they "forgot", but they no longer have the stimulus of training mileage and speed work.
    The guy that goes back in the weight room has muscles that still have adaptations to the previous stimuli.

    is there such thing as a FAT memory too?

    • @MrAaahh1
      @MrAaahh1 8 лет назад +73

      Well fat cells first grow in size and then divide. So when you're gaining fat, you're also increasing the amount of fat cells. When you're losing fat the cells just shrink, but the amount of cells actually stays the same.
      At least that's the way I remember it.
      Correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @blackpicha
      @blackpicha 7 лет назад +26

      You're absolutely right, that's what I remember as well. You need to have lost weight for a long period of time before the amount of fat cells starts falling.

    • @carstenstahl3448

    An explanation why calisthenics muscles last longer? From my personal experience, I had a very bad rotator cuff tear and I couldn't work the upper part for 5 months. However, my body hasn't changed a lot. My chest became less pumped and the back muscles of the injured part is the only part which had loss of muscle.

    You'll lose most of your muscle mass but when you hit it again from scratch that muscle memory kicks in hard.
    Personally i find ive developed a leaner bigger physique once i went on that fast from working out.

      That IS muscle memory literally.
      This in the video isn't muscle memory all literally. Which is why the dude in the beginning in the video said it wasn't n put quotations "muscle memory" because it's not. It's just a phrase people put in body building but it's not technically nor literally muscle memory.

    Exactly!! All that hard work we put in has torn and rebuilt the muscle fibres! That will never disappear unless we were stranded/without food for a long time having depleted fat stores then and only then will our muscle atrophy cause ur body will burn muscle as fuel 😅

    I broke my leg and have been inactive for 3 weeks. Ive dropped 7-8kg. My quad and calves have wasted away the most. Sure hope muscle memory works.

      Well on the bright side you get to experience doms again. Those calf doms are one of my favs. If you never worked out adductors oh man those are the worst doms I've ever felt in my life. I tried that sex machine women always do opening n closing legs at like 3am with no one around for shit m giggles and it actually fucked my life lmao

    Learning to play a musical instrument is also largely down to muscle memory, and that is an *amazing* muscular feat if you think about it, although of a different kind.

    I was signing my name on a job application and my ADHD as brain just says "I wonder how muscle memory works" and here I am. 🤦‍♂️. A blessing and a curse at the same time lol

    I've heard guys say that the fascia has been stretched already to a certain point so it's easier for the muscle to grow back to its original size and then slows to normal???

    does starving the muscles of oxygen (restricted blood flow training) help develop stronger muscle memory?

    Hei can you make a video about how much time you should spend in the gym to prevent muscle loss beacause of the hormone glucocorticoide?

    Can you talk about muscle memory in terms of myelination and what occurs in the very beginning-- why a dance move is so awkward at first and how we go from zero to one? (Vs why it's easier to come back)

  • @Mason1204
    @Mason1204 5 лет назад

    this applies to using keyboard bc at first we try to stretch our fingers we even have to look at the keyboard to type a key but with much practice we get better bc our fingers get more comfortable and we would use a keyboard more efficient

    The older you get, the harder it becomes to get back in the game. Do yourselves a favor and never quit in the first place. At 16 I could run 5k on command, without training for it. At 34 it took me 3 months to complete a 5k run..

    It depends how long the break isn't?
    Let's say one squats 300lbs and does 30 reps 'easily' and then decides to take a 6 month break, and begins to attempt to squat the same weight after the 6 month break there's no they would be able to squat that weight because of muscle atrophy. Correct me if I'm wrong.
    Great channel by the way I'm learning a lot.

      Yes, muscle breakdown will occur. The point is that it will take less time to get back to the 300lb/30rep set than it was the first time it took to achieve it.

    I am doing an Extended Essay on Muscle Memory, which later I am going to present it to university. Is there any way we can get in contact so I can ask you some questions? I have been working on these for the last 3 months and the project it is getting really exciting. I also conducted an experiment about basketball shooting, which turned to really good results. I f you would like to participate, I will be really pleased! +PictureFit

    How long does muscle memory last

  • @jad9727
    @jad9727 7 лет назад +1

    I'm 16. A week ago, at my peak, i weighed 58kg. I trained every other day (3-4 days a week). I gained quite some defenition but I got into a football accident & fractured my wrist which will take 6 weeks to recover.
    Seeing as though muscle memory exists, how long will it take for me to regain muscle?

  • @alexharriott1159
    @alexharriott1159 4 года назад +2

    do you still require as much protein as before to regain your muscles or can you manage without. I've got fat after not training and don't want to excessively eat.
