    I have learned so much here. I have posted a few garden box videos of the herbs and peppers I have grown with my own hands, but I find it useless almost to do it; Dead page. My garden box is beautiful, though. I have harvested so much of the herbs and dried them. They are soooo good, I have harvested jalapenos and banana peppers and dried them. The heat is unmatched in any store pepper. I have canned a few jars of them also. They just keep on giving. I have a lizard (anole) living in it which has since had a baby living there also. Hope they are not harmful to my veggies and herbs. Leaving them there. By the way, since growing and harvesting my own herbs and peppers and canning my own food, my depression has lifted. I am hoping for good. It's been months since I have experienced that dark feeling. I am awake and live, now. And I was plagued with this for years.

    Excellent timing on this video! I couldn't really find anyone growing it this time of year although I hear many do! I just put in seeds for a 85 day variety called celery d'elne after I harvested the potatoes. Definitely pushing it for my growing season but I'd be happy with even just leaves- I hear they make an excellent seasoning herb!

    Question: Zone 7 Maryland - After you have harvested and cut the stalks of the celery have you tried to regrow the roots to have celery late fall to December. If Maryland has a mild winter, and it's protected with a hoop house, would celery would it survive? Just wondering if you have had any luck or tried this method.

    Celery is great to grow, don’t be afraid folks! I watered my celery bed every day. My family loves fresh celery so much. Ive planted in part shade but got much sparser results. I add vermiculite to retain moisture and mulch with wood chips. I did better with larger transplants so I could mulch without them getting eaten up. They transplanted fine. Sun, water, food, time. If you must use a grow bag, make sure it’s in a water reservoir

    @Gary, I love celery. But I can not seem to grow squash or tomatoes, I have one pepper plant that is actually making peppers. Most of everything I started from seed this yr just did not grow very well. I have pepper plants I started back in March that are just now getting bigger that seedling. It has been very discouraging to work so hard for what is almost nothing. I am growing in rabbit 💩. It is about all I have to use for fertilizer. I do not have money to go get any thing else. A fence would help so very much for keeping the dogs, cats and chickens from ruining what little bit I am getting to kinda grow. ALL the stupid bugs...!!! NO wonder why lots of people use chemicals to kill bugs. I am starting to think my bugs like neem oil and soap. About the only this that slowed them down was baking soda. And I ended up getting it on some if the leaves... And they was burnt up really bad. I feel like I am growing vegetables plants just to watch plant grow, because THEY do not seem to be growing food.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 года назад +1

      So this is where I would try and make compost if you have the space. I would also by the chemical water soluble fertilizer, like Miracle Grow. That is the cheapest and it will feed your plants effectively. It is not harmful. I would try watering in your plants with it and see what you notice. Plan for next year and stick with it. Good luck.

I am just frustrated, I worked so very hard to grow lots of plants for to eat and share, and I haven't got but 2 tiny zucchini, one San Francisco chili, and a coffee can full of little potatoes. I wish I had someone close to me to go see how they do it and maybe it would help. I use to have my momma to turn to when things didn't workout but she past in 2014.

      @@hands2hearts-seeds2feedamu83 I've never had money for all the fancy stuff either. Try diatomaceous earth...you can find it at the farm stors in bulk. I bought a 50 pound bag last year for $26 and its gonna last for a couple more years. Also, I bought a concentrate of neem oil $20 for the first time this year. It helped. I also bought toole in bulk for about $15 and that kept the moths from laying their eggs on my cabbage and broccoli. Just do a little at a time over the winter and plan big for next year. Also, I water my entire garden every single day (that it didnt rain). That is the best thing to do fo good results. I cant afford to make a fancy drip system so I do it by hand, but I dont spray the whole plant, just the roots. I give each plant a puddle every morning before it gets hot.

    I started mine indoors and separated the plants rather than toss the thinnings. Same as how you demonstrated with tomato plants in the past. My celery is beautiful this year except we have been in an absolutely terrible drought and I have been struggling to keep my garden watered. The surrounding ground is so desperately dry it just wicks away the water I put in my beds. I'm spending 3-4 hours a day watering just trying to keep my gardens alive! (I have 15 gardens total which includes perennial edibles, vegetables, and flowers.) our river in our backyard is now a gravel road and our trees are starting to die, we won't even mention what was once lawn!

    What's your take on blanching celery? There are lots of advice around covering the stalks with paper or even building a dirt mound around each plant. Is the flavor difference that dramatic?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 года назад +1

      I dont mind the stronger flavor and I made soup with this. I think a paper bag for 7-10 days will help the stronger taste fade if that is what you prefer. Mine were strong tasting but not bitter.

    Does it not bolt when temperatures get hot? I grew it last year and only one plant had any success, it didn’t taste great so I assumed the hot summer weather made it bolt/become bittter like lettuce. Also…What do you do with so much celery at once?!

    • @melissasullivan1658
      @melissasullivan1658 3 года назад

      Technically it doesn’t bolt, but it can be bitter. You might’ve also planted a variety that requires blanching.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 года назад

      Keeping up the moisture helps with it getting bitter but that was my biggest concern in the heat as it matured. This is not doing so bolting wise. It may depend on the variety. But I stuck with harvesting it now at that 120 say mark. Ill see what happens to the 6 I left. Its a biennial, so next year it would flower.

    I might try celery again. I gave up on it over a decade ago, its hard to justify the hassle vs store bought. (Not like tomatoes or growing fancy hardneck garlic cultivars which are both way better than the stuff at the store.) How much frost can celery handle when maturing in the fall?
    I think I have an acceptable climate for it, but we have dense flushes of weeds that germinate right around the time celery would be sprouting and celery is just too slow to compete even with hand weeding, partly because the tiny seedlings are easy to disturb and partly because the long germination time allows the weed seedlings to get a solid head start. (Transplanting maybe?)
    We go from a cold wet winter-spring between 30 and 50f to a bone dry 85-105f summer in about 2 months, so all of the local spring annual weeds have evolved to go from zero to 100 in that short window.
    Maybe I should wait until after the main flush of weeds and grow it in the partial shade of tall summer crops then into the fall.

Be it for peace of mind or actually cheaper in the long run, it would be really appreciated if you could make videos on harvesting the different seeds or showing how to regrow the plants for the next years. 🙏🏻 if possible I’d prefer to regrow from what I’ve grown and just buy seeds for something I don’t have in the future.
