The Beasties were a New York punk band when they started & idolized punk rock Warlords Bad Brains. They took the BB from Bad Brains and put Beastie Boys in their place and the rest is history. They soon fell in love with the still forming Hip-Hop genre and have had a pretty solid career being the dopest weirdos in music history

In 1978 2 punk rock bands (the new aboriginies and The young and the useless) merged together by 1981 to form the Beastie boys. 1982 saw Herbie Hancocks ROCK IT and the breakdance revolution started. 1983 Brought us Run DMC (Keep in mind, most of the world still had not heard of Grandmaster Flash, Spoonie G, or Curtis Blow from the 70s) 1985 we saw the movie KRUSH GROOVE with the soundtrack song SHE"S ON IT from the BEASTIE BOYS, and RunDmC's King of Rock album. 1986 we see this album released, it became the BIGGEST SELLING RAP ALBUM EVER, and the FIRST RAP ALBUM TO GO PLATINUM. Basically, RAP WAS not catching on until the Beastie Boys toured with Madonna in 1986-87. The Beastie Boys 1978-2012.

This song, although a big hit, was the worst song on the album. The whole image depicted, and their concerts being banned in certain cities for vulgarity, was not the way they really were, and they didn't like that they were supposed to be "partyers" for life. Their next album Paul's Boutique is when they really took off creatively.

The Beastie boys are absolute legends. They dabbled in several genres of music and we're extremely talented, creative, and influential to music as a whole. The dudes even made the rock and roll hall of fame! My favorite song by the boys is So whatcha want. Do the music video!!

There's a sequel video to this from their last album called Make Some Noise (which was also extended into a short called I wanna say Fight For Your Right Revisited) where the boys are played by Danny McBride as MCA, Elijah Wood as Ad Rock and Seth Rogen as Mike D, along with a bunch of other cameos.

Fun Fact: The video was directed by Ric Menello and Adam Dubin, who were roommates. Menello was the overnight desk clerk at the Weinstein Hall dormitory in New York University (NYU), where Rick Rubin lived while also starting up Def Jam Records. Most video directors at the time had a background in commercials, which Rubin wanted no part of, so he asked Menello, who was a huge film buff to do it. When Menello refused, Rubin talked him into it by allowing Dubin, a recent graduate of NYU Film School, to co-direct so they could share the blame if it flopped.

And to think Rick Rubin produced this album, slayer's amazing Reign in Blood within a year or so of each other remarkable. Both hugely formative albums in their respective genres. And the beasties have an interesting medal crossover and that their early drummer is credited with one of the first full-on blast beats ever done back when they were a hardcore band

This was a fun surprise out of left field to me, who isn't a hip-hop guy, but a long-time rocker. I have no clue as to the time-lines, but I recall hearing about their critical acclaim and one might assume, "serious artistic aspirations", maybe around 'Paul's Boutique'?
Also remember Ice-T and Body Count, and Public Enemy's collab with Anthrax, also a hugely satisfying artifact of the times.

egg raid on mojo, They used to be a hardcore punk band, Kate Schellenbach who was in Luscious Jackson, was a founding member. Mike D commented that, "The only thing that upsets me is that we might have reinforced certain values of some people in our audience when our own values were actually totally different. There were tons of guys singing along to 'Fight for Your Right' who were oblivious to the fact it was a total goof on them."
