Joe used to leave his door open when I was waiting for a solfege class at NEC (the French instructor, fortunately, always ran at least twenty minutes late!), and I received a “lesson” from him when he was instructing his regular students. One thing that impressed me was his overtone demonstration- he would sing one of the harmonics BEFORE the student played it, and the pitches always matched - amazing ear!
Thanks so much for sharing these anecdotes, Eddie. Many years ago Michael Brecker gave me your number suggesting I take lessons with you, but at 18 years old I totally freaked out about Michael's performance level, and took it as an admonition.
Fascinating stuff. Great clarinetist...great raconteur; the eternally young Eddie Daniels. He and Morrie Backun are lucky to have each other. I wish he would try the ligature I've invented.
When I was in high school my clarinet teacher taught me anticipation of the fingers. I found out many years later after he died that he was a student of Bonade.
Just to hear these stories, is a gift !! From Mr. Daniels, a gift to all of us !!
he seems like such a nice guy
so inspirational!
I love the way this Gentlemen talks about music, Also the way that he has no problems to talk the things he had to face.
