    Great content as always, a new DDG video in my feed means its gonna be a good day. It is always fun changing a variable and witnessing the same outcome. I was in a similar situation for months with my Mustang not wanting to idle. It finally runs and idles now after repeating the same song and dance (clean carb, check timing, check spark plugs, check vacuum leaks, check duraspark box, etc) and although I'm happy about, it bothers me that I don't know exactly *what* it was that made it run better. I am starting to believe that the Machine Spirit is a real thing and that I must appease the Omnissiah to make my junk run right.

After I got it wired correct it fired instantly and ran great till a plug on a vacuum port fell off the bottom of the very cool intake that came with the setup. With some help from Dr.Art and finding the very large vacuum leak its running great. Let me try to put your mind at rest about those aluminum electron beam factory manifolds. Some of them were porous, actually a lot of them were. Those got fixed under warranty when they were new. My Dad was a Chrysler Dealer mech for 100 years, starting about 1913 or something. If a slant 6 came with a porous manifold, it almost never went on the lot without being remedied. If one snuck out somehow, the customer invariably brought it back and hollared until it was taken care of. Especially if it was a Leanburn Super 6 2bbl. They didn't develop MORE leaks as time passed, so the likelihood that you've got a porosity problem with your manifold based on it's original design is pretty dang small.
    My Dad said that after swapping leaky intakes on a few new Slants, they just started masking the the engine bay with cardboard and wadded up newspaper and spraying the manifold with genuine Mopar engine enamel in the handy 12oz aerosol can with the engine idling. The vacuum would suck the paint into the leaks and dry from the heat almost instantly. Any remaining leaks just got a send shot from the rattle can. The unused 1bbl replacement manifolds lay around for years until getting scrapped. The extra 2bbl manifolds were highly sought after for everyones old Slant 6 powered daily. A BBD and breatherfrom a 318 and you had a nice 15% boost in power. A WIN-WIN!

    As Uncle Tony said about DD SpeedShop having EFI problems. Imagine My surprise! 🥴 I had a full Fast Fuel injection setup on a 455 Pontiac that drove me nuts for over a year. Thing would surge in first and second like you were blipping the throttle. Wouldn’t start after a simple trip to the corner store, would out of the blue want to rev to the moon even though the throttle wasn’t touched. After literally a month on and off and every single component replaced at least twice, I gave up. I’ve got a really nice looking $3000 conversion piece. Swap meet $40 750 Holley with a fresh rebuild, Zero issues! Go figure! LOL

Challenging for sure it's the endgame reward once you actually have your turbocharged fuel injected fully tunable Valiant your willingness to keep on with it and deal with the diagnostics of trouble shooting one issue at a time you will get it figured out and have learned something at the same time. This project is something different like a R&D lab problems happen and have to be analyzed and solutions found. I know you can do it, you're definitely smart enough to handle it. Knowing who to talk to and trusting what they're telling you also helps. I want to see this Valiant doing what you intended it to do. Happy Holidays . It's going to be awesome .

    Hey Jamie. I normally do not post comments. I feel your frustration with this. I thoroughly enjoy your channel, keep it up! I will share my experience with the MSD Atomic and the Sniper. 1st hard lesson - do not skimp on the wiring or believe that NOT wiring anything the manuf says directly to the battery is a good idea. This includes the grounds. In fact put more grounds...everywhere. I have had use the conservative approach for wiring. For cable sizing i've been using Bluesea Systems Circuit Wizard to donthis as it sizes the wire larger than for a land based system. 2nd try your hardest to not touch the throttle when starting. I know it's frustrating when it won't start without touching it! 3rd build the engine map without boost, then add the boost. I was really looking forward to your step-by-step upgrades to the I6. Anyway, hope my comments help you even in a small way. Looking fwd to the next posting!

    My only slant six experiences were with one powering a wood chipper I towed behind a bucket truck. Worked ok in the warm months but, it was mounted such that the distributer was positioned to get a steady stream of slush from the rear dualies in the winter. Tried the aces kill shot on my fury. I couldn’t get it to run to save my life. Then went to the original style sniper. Ran great for 7 months before it took a shit. Only had a three month warranty. Finally went edelbrock AVS 2 on your recommendation in your videos and it’s been great. Maybe one suggestion I could make is as long as as one of those units has an IAC and TPS you can save 700$ and utilize it as a throttle body when you go to MPFI. That’s what I did with the sniper on my other non mopar car. Good luck!

    Pretty dang good video/story. All along I was waiting for the end to comment that you needed a stable voltage supply for your 6AL MSD box, MSD injection system and then the ACES EFI box. But then you figured it out. Yea all those electrical boxes uses a stable voltage supply to send voltages out to the sensors and then reads the return (or something to that effect), without a stable voltage supply the returns from the sensors are not accurate(precise) enough for the boxes to control what to do next. Due to the varying voltage supply the MSD 6AL box is probably just missing a signal here or there from the distributor causing the missing, thus fouling the plugs. Love the build and might do one like the same in this lifetime.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Час назад

      My assumption was that the only time the voltage drop would be an issue was during cranking, and that given the size of my battery lead, the difference between voltage at the battery and voltage there wouldn’t be much. What was particularly odd to me is that simply running the power for the 6A to the battery suddenly made the timing markedly more advanced during cranking. Which led me to understand that this was likely my main problem the whole time. I didn’t think it was related to my hard starting problem because the box was triggering the Atonic system with a tach signal, meaning the box was powered up and should have been doing its thing. But I guess it wasn’t.

    Put the EFI and ignition system on two separate feeds directly from the battery, and fuse the wires as close to the battery as possible. Ideally you'd have a fuse box with a wire feeding it directly from the battery *could also be under the hood or the dash) but most importantly, NOT sharing the same wire that feeds the starter, as when the starter is engaged, a considerable voltage drop develops across the wire, which is bad for electronics. Also personally I would put even more space between the ignition system and EFI, because ignition systems really make a LOT of wide spectrum noise, they act like a spark gap radio transmitter, the noise is induced in the signal wires of the EFI system and wreaks havoc. Ideally you would mount them on opposite sides of the engine bay, so in your case mount the EFI computer on the drivers side. As to what fried your EFI computer, maybe since it was sharing a power and ground wire with the ignition system, some high voltage spikes were injected by the MSD into the power wire, or enough RF noise was injected into a signal wire to fry it.

    Hi Jamie, I’ve built 2 Megasquirt systems and have had frustrations at times…
    1- cranking/RPM signal is extremely extremely sensitive to picking up noise. Always use shielded wire. Even then, routing may have to be played with. I had to relocate my last setup to the other side of the engine completely. I am VERY suspect of the CDI box anywhere near the EFI.
    2- knowing fuel pressure is a must. I would have a gauge directly in your regulator while troubleshooting
    3-My starter was causing excessive noise to my Megasquirt crank signal. Having your power wire on the starter is probably a huge problem. I would take the time to route it directly to the battery
    4-play with your grounds. Move them, clean them… whatever. Just try it
    5-Is your MAP sensor reading in absolute pressure? I thought I saw it reading 14 psi when you had it on, but not running. I would check to verify. 14 psi would then be correct, because, you know…. Science 😊

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  3 часа назад

      Yes, definitely showing atmospheric pressure on the map so it must be. Agreed on other points. And I added a temporary gauge to verify fuel pressure while I wait for the permanent one to arrive.

      @@DeadDodgeGarageSweet. I think you’ll get it. It’s a pretty basic system. I moved my crank wiring a few times and kept getting similar results. Then, as a last ditch effort, I ran the ENTIRE crank signal wire though the passenger window of the car as far as possible from everything and THAT proved my theory. It’s very irritating. Also, you ARE correct that a wideband can read lean when it is excessively rich. You can find stuff online about it. The AFR reading is only accurate within a certain window

    You have an exhaust leak. If the O2 sensor reads lean and the exhaust smells rich, it's not reading correctly. Likely an exhaust leak anywhere before the O2 bung, or even a little bit after it. It can be a leak as small as a pinhole! I have seen that many times, especially if I'm the one who welded the bung in. That might've been your problem the entire time. Both systems are trying to trim the fuel how they think they should based on inaccurate AFR information. Probably doesn't help that the turbo has made the exhaust plumbing complicated - more places to leak. You might also want to try moving the O2 bung as far upstream as possible, maybe on that stainless turbo adapter. Also if it has a misfire it won't know that and will read the exhaust lean and enrichen the mixture making everything worse. O_o
    Also, I'm guessing ACES' fuel pressure sensor is a standard off-the-shelf GM sensor.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  6 часов назад +1

      I know. There are two small exhaust leaks at the flange (too small to hear, but I see staining,) and I’m sure that’s a factor. I understand the issues with misfires causing incorrect O2 readings, which is why I prioritized fixing that. But the major issues I am having with this system (and the Atomic) are on startup, *before* the system has a chance to enter closed loop.

    • @budlanctot3060
      @budlanctot3060 4 часа назад +1

      Just maybe, what you THINK is rich exhaust may be lean misfire. In other words mixture is too lean to fire & burn properly, so the engine is pumping out unburned fuel into the exhaust.

    I ran #10 positive and negative wires w/loom covers from the trunk-mounted battery to a pair of isolated terminals under the hood to run the MSD, with #10 offshoots in tje car going to the glovebox where the EFI controller was located.
    Ran big capacitors from the local ear-bleediing car audio store to get rid of the electronic trash I saw on an osciloscope.
    And still both my EFI's died.
    But that was then, keep after it- should work better nowsdays.

      Seemed like the MSD was most of it, the Alt contributed some but it was several orders smaller.
      This was with Holley Pro-Jection glorified 670cfm 2bbl TBI unit that had to be tuned by 5 potentiometers for 'best guess' running OR in O2 sensor controlled closed-loop
      via a flip of the switch.
      So the fixed setting were for 'limp home' for me, but could be 'race track day' for others.
      I looked in the boxes upon failure and so much circuit board was roasted- figured the internal voltage regulator 12v to 5v(?) Failed big time.
      Second one lasted a week
      I had bought 2 of them with an idea of using the 2nd one on one of my other vehicles- not as a emergency replacement.
      In the mean time Holley had went fully digital & used 4 bbl platform (early units like mine were production-based TBI & semi-analog?)
      Holley basically did no rework on bad controllers and suggested I buy their brand new 4bbl TBI setup & digital computer.
      Ahhh, nooo thanks.
      Funny how now you can have a $75 Arduino run a TBI unit with some add-ons.

    The fuel injection is neat but, I've always wanted to slap a couple Mikuni sleeve type variable venturi motorcycle carbs on a vehicle like that. Of course, that would entail building a couple specialized intake manifolds(3 ports each). It might be tough to adapt plumbing to those from a turbo, though.
