And today I want to talk to you about one of the most common beginner-mistakes I see in watercolor painting.
This has to do with VALUES, and getting them to:
1. Be accurate
2. Be varied (will depend on the reference).
The 2nd example is something I've been dealing with a lot in the past, of mistakingly pushing the contrast a little too much, and darkening things unnecessarily.

I love the statement about being loyal to the values. When I began a few months ago, I was loyal to the "colors" of my image, but paid little attention to the values. When I watched your video on choosing colors tonite, I noticed how you really paid attention to the values of the fruit, seeing darks that I didn't see until you pointed them out. It was a really great learning moment for me. It was fantastic that I discovered this video right after that one, because it addresses that very issue. I've been hesitant to go dark enough, but when I do, it is such an exciting feeling, because it makes everything come alive. Thank you so much for sharing what you know!

Sometimes it can all click in just one moment, and then you're set!
The easiest thing to remember about value is that for the most part your tubes of paint ARE YOUR MIDDLE VALUE. And if you add water you can get lighter. If you add a compliment or Paynes or a dark grey or black then you can get a darker value.

And if you made it too dark by mistake you can darken the light part of the architecture.... It's all about the sudden change from very dark to very light it doesn't look natural.... In my previous painting i thought i made the light part too light..... But you made it all clear... Now i know my mistake.... Thank you very much... Love your work... 🤟✌🙏
Yes, thank you. I’m struggling with the values. I am getting somewhere after 1.5 years but not even there so I’m loving this help! I never paint from photos though. I paint from life then take a photo when I’m done. I use it later to improve the painting.

I'm just starting, and once I saw this, I decided to look at some that I've done before, and I definitely do the first one. My contrast is not strong enough. I'm still not used to to the fact that watercolor dries much lighter than how it looks at first, so all values in my paintings are very light, but I still have trouble with contrast. I think I'll start trying to be more brave in my painting and try using darker values.

Can i use that combo (dark blue and brown) for the shadow for every piece?
If you weren’t demonstrating this, would you have painted the entire castle in light beige and then add dark shadow over it? Or would you just paint light beige in the light and just paint the shadow in the shadow color (without layering)?
Great question - I don't have a predetermined go to these days.
I go with what I feel at the moment.
My vision and intuition takes utmost precedence over everything else.
But either way would work, as long as I truly stay loyal to my vision.

Hi Luron,thank you for pointing it out.I try to do shadows less dark and it kills the beauty of the painting.Will try and apply your knowledge to mine painting for now on.Do more videos on painting shadows as I find them quite hard to figure out.
I find a lot of watercolor channels setting up palettes, but they always use the same brand together and end up being reviews more than anything else

It comes down to getting it to be close to the reference, most of the time.
If it's close, it should look good.
Also - sometimes we are too close to the picture to see it is quite accurate (a part of the artist curse) (;

A very useful video, Liron - thanks for posting this one. I definitely suffer from the 'getting it too dark too early' syndrome ... ... probably from always reading (when I started watercolour) that most beginners leave everything too pale and insipid. So far I've not been successful at adding glazes to slowly build up tone, as I've been using wood pulp paper, where the underlying layers always get disturbed by the glazes - with 'mud' being the common result :-( However, I've started using cotton paper more (Arches and Bee paper) so maybe I'll be able to try the 'added glazes' approach to avoid the too dark values taking over the painting. Oh, I know exactly what you mean!
Pulp paper doesn't really absorb the paint. Glazing is nearly impossible.

And you can be happy to be in the minority of getting it too dark haha. I find 80% are the other way around, in my experience.

Nice vid. Great advice for beginners to advanced watercolourists. How about a vid that is more of a "challenge" style; something that would bring all the previous "Color Shows" together in a personal way, such as "My Perfect Palette". I find a lot of watercolor channels setting up palettes, but they always use the same brand together and end up being reviews more than anything else. How about an opinion vid that uses different brands for different colors that you would use as a "perfect palette". Just an idea. Thanks for not separarting "us RUclips watchers" from "them, the Paetron givers". It is very kind of you to be so sharing.

Johnny Whatevah paint colors aren’t that important. Just get a good brand or brands of artist quality paints. And you don’t need 30 colors. I got more than 30 because I could at the time and I’m glad to have them but really 12 or so will do fine. A limited palette keeps you focused on the most important thing which is values. I do prefer M Graham Sepia, Payne’s Grey and Raw Umber to others I’ve tried but I don’t like their Sap Green.
This is very helpful to me. I am a beginner. Yesterday I painted a girl in a sweater and found that I darkened it too much. I wanted to go back in and add some lines to show that it was indeed a knitted sweater and could not because my 1st wash was too dark.

I like doing glazes . I'm slow . I don't want to have to rub a color out to lighten it with tissues if I make a mistake which are many.
it's very difficult to get the right value of colors because when the paint is wet, all the colors look bright and nice and after drying some pigment becomes very light, almost invisible. Because of this, most of my first washes get dark. Do you know any tips to avoid that?
