“Once people no longer think that you are a serious interlocutor, calculating on your own behalf, you’re written off, you’re finished.”
The Australian politicians need to think very hard about this statement.

Despite domestic issues/conflicts that Singaporeans face, We must agree that Singapore has done extremely well, survived and is still booming. I may have migrated to another country, but I will always say “ Nothing Beats Singapore la!” The feeling of security when I see an SQ flight at any airport is unexplainable 😁 The fact that StarHub and SingTel outlets were OPENED on New Year’s Day literally made my jaw drop!! Life is never or seldom Greener on the other side ( as much as we want to think). I’m always a proud Singaporean and I always get goosebumps hearing the National anthem and alll the National Day songs ( We are Singapore, We are Singapore, We will stand together hear the Lion roar...)🙌🏽🙌🏽

To be objective, we can't choose where we are born but Singapore is up there in the sense that there are many things working in favour of citizens, MSF takes care of citizens who require financial assistance and housing, there are measures in place to subsidise low income households (CHAS card etc), there are lots of charities that step in to take care of the underprivileged and easy access to crowdfunding platforms. It may not be an ideal place for some but there is the option to move countries because we are mostly in a good position to do so. Singapore is indeed blessed, people who have lived overseas tend to appreciate what Singapore has. No country is perfect, I would like to see Singaporeans take an active role in improving their community instead of leaving it to others and then complaining about it.

Upgrade people .. high quality people.. it is as though he sees people as commodities. Everything is economically rationalised.. however, there needs to be a social outlet if you will... a release from the rigors of economic demands and aspirations of the elite.

I am a Singaporean, and a "product" of this system. I appreciate the long-range thinking of our leaders, and the strength to make unpopular decisions that are good for our future. And time and again, it has been proven right.
I do not take our prosperity for granted.
As a Commodity, as you have mentioned, myself, I am not economic robot. Far from it. I have left a cushy job and become a freelance photographer pursuing my passion, for the past 10 years now. I do not feel pressured to live a particular way too. In fact, it is the stable political and economic climate of our nation that allows us more freedom than many other developed countries to pursue what our hearts desire.
If you talk about aspirations of the Elite, it is a broad term. There are elites who only care about their own right, and in the case of politicians, popularity. And then there are elites who have genuine care for people under their charge, with evidence to show.

    • @stephenmonash821

@@gorillaofjohn15 Good to hear you have done well out of the system. "Elites who have genuine care for the people under their charge with evidence to show" .. My god you are serious aren't you.. the British have taught you well.. what absolute patronising BS....A total oxymoron ..lol the elite caring.. for the people "under their charge'. You need not say anymore.

    • @gorillaofjohn15
      @gorillaofjohn15 4 года назад

@@stephenmonash821 indeed those who are in the position to lead are responsible for those under their charge, their care. "Elites" was to phrase what you originally did, and I am not afraid to use it back to you. Some may be sensitive about some terms for political correctness. But not needed here for the facts more than back up the argument. It is deliberate inclusion i am sure it is within you capacity to catch that.
Instead of trying to be smart trying to pick cracks to pry, try to educate yourself by learning more. And make judgements based on real knowledge and experience. Best, spend real time in where you choose to judge. Singapore, China, it can be anywhere.
But again, heck you can even win the argument should you choose! if it makes you feel clever.

It's a given China is and soon India will become world centers of commerce and innovation. It's a question of numbers, simple math. Once they get everyone off the farm, they have more minds. Some of those minds will provide innovation. They'll have more patents and Nobel Prizes; and the world will be better for it. And once everyone is educated in those countries, maybe the birth rates and their populations will decline. It looks like Russia might be changing its stripes. If they become anything like a true democracy, it will be much easier to purchase Russian products and services. Wish China would also move in that direction.

Actually, the strategy of China is by purposely allowing part of the country (Shanghai, and Shenzhen) to be rich by focusing most budget of the nation, then spread wealth around those to make everyone off poverty.

Des Chan well well. Allow me to give a meta-reply to your comment. You can ask me to keep it to myself. No problem there as you are entitled to do so. And then I’ll say but this is a public platform and you chose to comment publicly so I am also well within my rights to reply to your comments. So really what’s the point of saying that? It only highlights the lack of a proper retort from you. And do you know what I think? People like you always talking smack about your own country (non-constructively) seem to have the smallest of minorities yet have a disproportionately loud presence online. Do you realise that the far greater majority of us are just living our lives contently and focusing our energy working towards a better future instead of whining incessantly on social media platforms? Food for thought.

It is a totalitarian state.. .. what is good about that.. Distribution of wealth is woeful. I have visited Singapore.. there is a huge class distinction... Just travel on the train and get off at various stations .. it will not take long to establish the social stratification. People's votes do not count.. they just show the fixed government where dissent lies. Singapore people apart from the one percent looked downright miserable. It is highly regulated and you can see the discontent etched on the vast majorities faces. It is in essence a police state. Socially it is just sterile.. where fun is artificially manufactured... it is not real .. there is no sense of normal social interaction unfettered by the government.

Singapore has consistently been rated as the least-corrupt country in Asia and amongst the top ten cleanest in the world by Transparency International.[4][5] The World Bank's governance indicators have also rated Singapore highly on rule of law, control of corruption and government effectiveness. However, it is widely perceived that some aspects of the political process, civil liberties, and political and human rights are lacking.[6] The Economist Intelligence Unit rated Singapore a "flawed democracy" in 2018.[7][needs update] Freedom House deemed the press "not free" in 2015.[8]

Although Singapore's laws are inherited from British and British Indian laws, including many elements of English common law, the PAP has also consistently rejected liberal democratic values, which it typifies as Western and states that there should not be a 'one-size-fits-all' solution to a democracy. Laws restricting the freedom of speech exist to prohibit speech that may breed ill will or cause disharmony within Singapore's multiracial, multi-religious society. For example, in September 2005, three bloggers were convicted of sedition for posting racist remarks targeting minorities.[25]
Some offences can lead to heavy fines or caning and there are laws which allow capital punishment in Singapore for first-degree murder and drug trafficking.
