Thanks for this video. I found a 30ct gemstone out at Mt Surprise years ago, never completely knew if it was Quartz or Topaz. This video helped, as it has striations running down the sides, not across!

    Thanks for this!
Did my first ever panning for gold at the weekend, only for about an hour but I not only found a little gold, I also pulled out lots of clear crystals from the hole I got my panning material from. Being a complete novice in this area, I assumed they were probably quartz.
RUclips suggested this video and before watching it, I googled "Topaz" and learned that it's usually found in pegmatite.
I then googled "Pegmatite" and saw a photo of a rock. Yep... that's the rock that's in that area alright (black rock full of white veins). Now I think I'll lave to go back and have another look at all those crystals I turfed out of that hole before the next rain arrives!
    Thanks again!

Good video mate, the only thing i would change is advising the cold test. Yes topaz is colder but quartz is also cold, iv seen many people put clear quartz to their face and decide they have a piece of topaz. I always reccomend sgt to identify. But great video you have some nice specimens there.

I really liked this video and it has made total sense for my deciding if it's topaz or quartz.. I wonder if there's size limit you should expect to find topaz in because my piece is about "centre of the palm size", 5cm x 3cm x1.5cm. It is bigger than the ones in your video and the raw topaz I've seen online. Would this rule it out? My stone is golden ish 'stained' on the outside but totally clear, water-clear inside, with some internal faces you can see running through it. I've ruled out calcite because the angles and things are much more fluoritey. Anyway thanks for any thoughts!

Is topaz found attached to other minerals? Also, is it likely to be found in the same location where quartz are found in nature? Thanks!

    • @lachlanitis2311

You'll often find topaz with quartz and other gemstones like sapphires and black tourmaline.
Because topaz is heavier than quartz it will be most likely below the quartz in low points in the rivers and such.
Where I live if I pull out some black tourmaline I know I'm in the right spot.
