- Giant Train! 36,000 Tons! Nearly 300 Cars! 26,400 Horsepower! 6 Engines 4 DPU Alrights! NS UP Power! 3 1/2 Miles Long! 4 Trains in all in this action packed train video filmed in and around Dun Kirk NY on April 30th 2022.
0:00 Intro.
0:54 We are at the Norfolk Southern Middle Road crossing on 30 April 2022. We on the south side of the tracks looking at Progress Drive as the gates start to lower. At 1:02 we hear the horn of an approaching Norfolk Southern train. At 1:09 you show us Norfolk Southern train #W10 approaching from the west. This is an extra version of Norfolk Southern train #310 from Elkhart, Indiana to Binghamton, New York. This is a 39, 000 ton train with close to 300 two-bay covered hopper cars loaded with frac sand for the fracking wells in Pennsylvania. At 1:21 train #W10 hit Middle Road. At 3:49 two Union Pacific mid-train DPUs appear in the train. At 5:43 we see two Union Pacific end of train DPUs. At 5:51 Norfolk Southern train #W10 finishes crossing Middle Road. At 5:56 the gates go up and you proceed across the Norfolk Southern tracks and turn right onto Progress Drive. You follow the end of train DPUs to the place were Werle Road crosses the Norfolk Southern tracks and where Werle Road joins Progress Drive. At this point Werle Road continues east parallel to the Norfolk Southern tracks and Progress Drive ends. After you cross where Werle Road proceeds east, you turn off the camcorder and speed up to the next crossroad which is Newell Road, At Newell Road you stop, get out of the car and turn the camcorder back on to record the rest of Norfolk Southern train #W10 as it passes Newell Road. At 9:32 Norfolk Southern train #W10 finishes crossing Newell Road. You walk up on Newell Road and zoom in on the end of Norfolk Southern train #W10 and continue to watch it heading east until 12:05 when you zoom back from the train and then continue to comment on the train as you walk back to your car.
12:43 We are at the CSX Mile Post 41 curve on 30 April 2022 looking east as CSX train #I165 comes down off the elevated tracks through Dunkirk, New York. At 15:38 mixed freight cars appear in the train. At 15:09 train #I165 finishes passing our location. CSX train #I165 is the daily Canadian Pacific double stack run through train that starts in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as Canadian Pacific train #143. The Canadian Pacific crew brings the train into the United States at Niagara Falls, New York and takes the train to the CSX Seneca Yard in Buffalo, New York. At Seneca Yard a CSX crew takes over the train and it becomes CSX train #I165. The CSX crews they take the train to the Canadian Pacific's Schiller Park Intermodal Yard in Schiller Park, Illinois where the train terminates. At 15:09 train #I165 finishes passing our location. We watch the train until it goes out of view behind some trees. 15:50 We are at the Berry Road crossing in Pomfret, New York on 28 April 2022. The CSX fats are going down. At 15:57 we hear the horn of a CSX train approaching Berry Road. At 16:19 CSX train #Q634 hits Berry Road with a few open top garbage gondola cars following behind the engines. There are mixed freight cars after the garbage gondola cars. AT 17:22 a four compartment 20,000 gallon tank car appears in the train. This four compartment tank car is probably the first such tank car that we have seen in a very long time. Normally all of the tank cars that we see in trains are single compartment tank cars. At 18:05 a mid-train DPU appears. Immediately following the DPU are more open top garbage gondolas which make up the rest of the train. At 19:03 CSX train #Q634 finishes crossing Berry Road. You explain that while this particular train terminates in Selkirk Yard in Selkirk, New York which is located south of Albany, New York. The garbage gondolas are put on another CSX train that travels down toward New York City were the garbage gondolas are refilled and then reverse course back to Columbus, Ohio. 20:05 We are at the CSX Mile Post 41 curve looking west on 24 April 2022. At 20:10 CSX train #I168 appears. At 21:30 we watch CSX train I168 as it passes our location and continues on its way to the elevated tracks through Dunkirk, New York. 22:10 Your Outro commences and terminates at 25:01. Thank you for documenting these trains in the Dunkirk, New York area. Especially thank you for documenting that first train, Norfolk Southern train #W10. That train has got to be the longest and heaviest train that I can remember seeing in one of your videos over the time period that I have been subscribed to your RUclips channel.

There's nothing like a man who likes DPU's!!!!
Wow never in my lifetime have I seen any train that long and heavy, good work WWOT. Those 4 DPUs were really working hard. They were really down on their knees. Especially the ACE on the rear. I never would have thought it
possible to run a train that big, just amazing. Thanks, & DPU alright ! 🚂👍🏼👍🏼😱
I see the frac train broken down in the bingo yard when I go over 81 in bingo that's definitely a monster really enjoyed that. Awesome catch
@@dirtydiesels3110 I’m not too surprised by that. Thanks
That is by far the longest train I've ever seen. Very impressive 👏 👌 👍 😀 🙌 💪!!!
Thank you very much!
Awesome Norfolk Southern train
That was one long Grain Train with 4 UP DPU's ALRIGHT! Awesome!
Oh yeah!
@@WideWorldofTrains I got a video of a long Eastbound Coal Train with 7 engines with 5 DPU's ALRIGHTS its on my channel it's about 8 1/2 minutes long go check it out. Thanks
Giant train Alright!
A great way to kick off today's video with a mega train; 3 miles long, 300 cars, 4 DPU's and it's a NS train to boot. How long has it been since we have seen something like that from NS!!!?? I think the Wide World of Trains car is making the rounds in the North East. Maybe we will see a Jaw Tooth or Kansas Missouri Rail Fan car some day.
FGLKs Railway had a train with 228 axles
A car for JawTooth and another one for Hobo Shoestring. They certainly have earned their railfanning chops, too.
Wow that's unbelievable 300 cars 6 Engines 4 DPU's thanks for that video
You bet
That kid running through that crossing tho, I did this once and got my @as beat to a pulp! 💯
I Was the conductor on that W10, it had 252 cars. It was just shy of 36,000 tons. Biggest train I've ever been on. It was only 2½ miles long. Thats really big for a bulk commodity train.
I counted (twice to make sure);
It was 252 cars
At about 140 tons/car that would be about right. The maximum weight per car is 143 tons (286,000 lbs) on our current mainline freight system.
3 1/2 MILES LONG!?
I've seen and heard about long trains but this is beyond even me.
Great railfan, the largest train I’ve ever seen, more than 3 miles long. Thank you.
In the first train, I counted 250 of those sand cars. That's still well over three miles long.
The six engines account for nearly 1/10th of a mile in the total length.
I counted 256 cars and 6 locomotives
Thank you for a great video ! I thoroughly enjoyed the car chase of the NS train with 6 locomotives . Delighted to see you back trackside, and trust you are now fully recovered. Very best wishes.
Many thanks!
DPU Alright double awesome
Very cool massive train
Now that's a record!!! 4 DPU's 275 cars long trains
Awesome Double DPU Double Alright! NS with DPUS the world's gone mad! Lol! 👍🙃
Oh boy a 300 car train with 4 DPU ALRIGHTS UP units at that with NS AC44C6M and NS ES44AC GEVO leading the head end and 2 UP units mid DPU and 2 more UP units at the tail end of the train.
Wow how amazing was that video awesome trains with 5 DPU ALRIGHTS very cool
That first train was massive! So many cars and pulling power and 4 DPU’s!

AWESOME Premiere WWOT! That NS Frac Sand Train Was HUGE And It Had 286 Hoppers Of Frac Sand And 6 Locomotives
That's TWO trains being run by ONE crew folks!!!
That was one big Train probably the biggest I’ve ever seen by far in one of your videos
Cool!
Those cars are loaded!!!
This is one of the BIGGEST trains I ever seen
One time on one of my mom's trips to Florida we were on our way home and we stopped at a railroad crossing and when I saw there were five high-powered locomotives on the head end I told her shut the car off Mom we're going to be here for a while. We sat there 15 minutes and I counted the cars and it was 275 cars. Of course it was the hold for tonnage people who destroyed the service the railroads were famous for. Short lines always gave great service because that's all they had to offer. The Long Island Railroad handled 8000 freightcar loads a year until they sold it to New York and Atlantic. The transit authority was used to the 8,000 carloads the Long Island wood handle. The New York and Atlantic gave such great service to their shippers that their carloads went to 37,000 per year. The transit authority was not used to having so much Freight traffic. When you give good service to your shipper your business increases, they had one shipper who said I called them up to say my car was empty come get it and within our they came and got it. Now that's good customer service.
Beautiful beautiful beautiful
What a massive train! And all frac-sand, wow! Thanks for posting it WWoT.

WWOT
Great train to start off the video
I truly appreciate you videoing all the trains you run into. That first train video was awesome. All those locomotives distributing power together. I agree that with all those heavy cars needed a lot of power to pull all that weight safely. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos. ROLL IT😄!
Glad you like them!
Thank you Sir and stay safe out there.
That fracking train was a monster...that's the first train I've seen on WWoT that had middle and end-train DPUs on it.
Quad DPU'S alright. Awesome 4 mile train.
Please let me know if I got this right. 6 engines, with a rare double D.P.U. configuration. And 252 cars. Or a total of 1,044 axels.
Great job! I don't think that J.T. has even caught one that big 😳. And thanks for the four U.P.s.
That came from Butler, WI on the UP. Crazy huge!
That train looks like someone lost a whole beach!
ChainsawN&W1218, that was a monster of a NS train,it was actually 252,I counted it twice, I do the same thing I count when I'm filming, it's not so easy, never seen a frackin sand train before, biggest train I've seen, We get some Big NS trains down hear, with mid helper DPUS, coal, hopper, time freights, pot ash and IM,some over 200 cars, ultimate DPUS Alright 👍.
Great catch Union pacific
Great catch WWOT
I always love seeing a train pounding around that big graceful curve there.
Excellent video. I counted 252 cars, 2 leading engines, and the 4 DPU's.
Nice work!
that was awesome having 6 engines. At least they listened and made it happen. Now that CP was on full eat mode, WOW was it screaming! Gotta be about 70 mph.
That last one seems like a new train at the End!
That train was long man!
360000 pounds. A boat load
Train originated on the UP as the MBUNSX-26 and showed arriving to Ashland Ave in Chicago with totals of 250-0-35621-10927. Contrary to your headline the train was just over 2 miles long, not 3.5 miles long.
I watched about half the premier then I got a phone call.. Watching the rest of it now. Looks like spring is getting there. I am impressed by your knowledge of the trains, routes, and cargoes. Good for you. Greg in TN😀
Thanks 👍
That is one looong train!
Superb catch as always!!! Thx for explaining the purpose of DPU's and how they save power and loads in-transit.
That was an amazing video with two NS lead locomotives, 4398 and 8081, and 4 DPUs, 6618, 8435, 5515, and 8778, thank you so much for sharing this video for railfans who couldn't be there with you. That was a long train.

My family(mom, dad & brother) were vacationing in Michigan somewhere when we came upon a crossing that lights came on just as we got to it, so we counted the cars and I believe, if I remember correctly, it was around 240 cars
