Fix a Porsche...With a TEST LIGHT?! (Convertible Top)

- Today we have a cool German roadster to diagnose: a 1999 Porsche Boxster!
Customer complaint: CONVERTIBLE TOP does not work.
After doing some research on the system, my weapon of choice is...a TEST LIGHT!
Let's see if we can pinpoint the problem, and fix it in the parking lot :)

The humble test light is often dismissed by many as irrelevant, yet I see you, Eric and only a few others use it. At times it is more useful AND suitable than a power probe and a multi-meter when diagnosing. It comes down to understanding the mode of operation and circuit, and selecting the right tool without overcomplicating things. The shop that engaged you were lost without a scanner to assist. It is the times we live in Ivan.
I expect it's more a time issue. Plenty of shops farm out jobs they aren't well equipped for.
Electronic problems fall into that category, especially on European cars.
It could be a loose wire that comes to hand immediately, or it could be a series of faulty relays and three shorts to ground.
Since the customer is paying, they may as well get someone who specialises rather than spend an unknown amount of time chasing it themselves.
A guy at work the other day was testing for a no crank on a car, positive post on the starter had no voltage, on top of the batter there is a big block of mega fuses that run off to different posts, the post going to the starter showed 12.5 volts with his multi meter, I grabbed my test light and that post did not light a test light, went back to the meter and tested resistance across that fuse and it was showing hundreds of kila ohms, that mega fuse was bad. With a multi meter it showed battery voltage on the other side of the fuse but with a test light it was obvious that the fuse was not capable of passing current to the other side, test light proves itself time and time again

That's right you're fine shorts a lot easier if you use at test light and load the circuit.
Ivan is one of the best automotive diagnosticians combined with video production on RUclips. His channel should be required watching for young technicians. He sets a great example.
Have you seen kind of guys who sign up for ase training? I don’t have as much faith as you. Everyone has a story about getting ripped off because there is so little talent left in the industry when you get off of RUclips. The reason is that standards have only dropped as cars get more complicated. They should be trained in digital electronics but they really aren’t

@@adobedoug2564 OK - what I meant was he makes sure that the camera captures the views necessary for the viewer to understand what's happening. He doesn't take the easy way for him.
SOUTHMAIN AUTO IS VERY GOOD ALSO.
I wish he had a videographer though. He would work so much more freely with two hands while someone videos him.
It's not the sophistication of the tool - it's what you do with it 🙂 Great diagnostic and very pleasant to watch!
BTW, I agree! An automatic transmission takes away most of the fun in driving, particularly in a sports car.
Ive been a mechanic for many years and was always taught even by high-level trainers that test lights are bad news and can lead you astray. All these years later ive learned from people like Ivan that its the first tool i grab when diagnosing rudamentary electrical circuits!
You can always add a Voltmeter in parallel to see if there is any appreciable voltage drop :) What do the trainers recommend...A LoadPro? xD
when you're looking for power and ground, the test light can be the easiest tool to use!

This goes back to your early videos with the powers and grounds and serves as an excellent reminder to all of us just how important it can be to not always jump to the expensive tools - often times the simple basic ones can be the best!
Nice diagnostics. Before CAN networks, Porsche used to do a lot of control circuits with double wide relays. Imagine working on a 1980s 928 with 100 relays in the fusebox.

I bet the switch absorbed a coke some time in the past. It’s our human nature to drink, drive and spill. I’ve seen a lot of poorly thought out controls that put the cup holders right next to or above them. It’s great to see you diagnose rather than swap.

Good diag and repair. Yes it is usually what is between the ears that solves the problem. Ivan you are one smart dude.
I love circuits like this, no gimmicky black boxes, just simple relays and switches. You are on the ball again Ivan using the simple and reliable test light method of circuit testing. You should try working on the non US spec Honda CRX del Sol with the retractable roof,,, you would love it. I had to rebuild one after a bunch of so called mechanics went at it. That system uses micro switches, interlocks, a cable driven motor with worm drive, roof latches and knob, a retractor and receiver tray and a trunk lid that rises vertically to send out and retrieve the roof panel.
This was by far the most complicated "relay" I have seen... 17 pins!!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics yes,,.. what can I say other than its German. Its still easy to check the circuits and you can "see" them in action with the test light.
Love how thorough you are Ivan. I can see how you're so advanced at your young age. Couldn't you just look at the dash board and see the brake light wasnt on? Lol that's always first step when looking at convertibles!
I’m sure Ivan knew that , too smart “not” to know ! If he went right to the switch,,,it would have no “learning” value & a 2 minute video ! LOL
I'm curious if the parking brake light on the dash is on the same switch and if that was working or not. If not, that would have been a dead giveaway.
Nice to have a simple electrical circuit instead of multiple modules, communication lines and programmable updates needed.

Diagnose Dan had a BMW with a pinched wire in the top that was shorting out. His too was a very easy fix for the convertible top. Hats off to both of you!

NO scanner is going to send you in a direction to fix this . Anyone doing diagnostics MUST master these basic skills . Great fix . Way back a friend had , I believe a 1977 Cadillac Seville . It would not run . The ECM " may " have been bad . There were 10 wires on it !!!!!!!!!! I offered to use a wiring diagram and trace things . He got scared and sold it . I can't imagine what he does on ANYTHING newer !
Many , many years ago , my “first “ wiring “nightmare “ was a 77 Seville ! Fuel injected , computer controlled drivability system with no DLC ! WTF ! Never forgot it 40 years later ! LOL,,,but not fun !
@@fredwalker839 It had a handful of sensors and 10 wires on the ECM . If each item is isolated and checked , it should send you in a direction to fix it . But this guy started replacing parts . Are the parts good ? Wiring ? Power and grounds ? Then he got a " used ECM " - did you see it work ? A test light would be a stretch for him .
It brings a smile to my face. When you First started I said to you and others I watch the test light is the best fuse and testing gear. No what you are testing and choose the right Wantage. Ie trigger central locking 40watt computer 20miliamp led. 30 years testing still haven't damaged anything 🤣

I watch every one of your videos and was interested in this when it first came out because I have a boxster of the same year. Then last night we went to put up the top and --- nothing. Before I came across your video again I already knew there was a problem with the parking brake switch because the warning light for it wasn't coming on, so I didn't have to test every contact like you did, but your video sure helped in getting to the switch. Not sure what the problem was because after I messed around with it a bit the switch starting working again. At least for now -- No Parts Required!!

Nice to have a simple system to operate the top. Customer got off easy. Usually they need top transmissions and new cables$$$$$ they do make replacement gears aftermarket so that saves money.

Just wanted you to know , I followed your testing step by step and found pin 19 no power , pulled top latch apart and found broken cold solder on switch! Thank you for your video!

Cool repair - it's not all scanners and sometimes you hafta get down to basics. My sentiments exactly on the automatic tranny. As I was watching the video before you commented, I was already formulating a comment about only 2 pedals. Sadly, I've heard the newest version of the Corvette is not even available with a manual tranny. People are getting too soft......

I don't want an automatic transmission unless I'm driving something that absolutely requires one, ie - lux car, drag car or heavy equipment. I started out driving an (old at the time) 1950 Farmall Cub (4spd) at age 12, and have owned very few (boring) automatics since. I have a 96 2.3L Ranger (5spd) and a 98 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L (5spd) and both are fun to drive! Great video, Ivan! 👍
I completely agree! I'm obviously younger than you, 47 next month, but I started driving on a standard transmission, and to this day, I'll take a standard over an automatic any day. I'll buy the wife what she wants (auto), but I want a standard.
My great grandfather liked horses more than cars. Cars were boring, horses had individuality. Look how many horses are left. Automatics is progress. Manuals are melancholy. Biggest progress? Electric. These do not need any transmissions at all. The future? Motors inside the tyres replacing the wheels (See Lightyear zero).
@@ronaldderooij1774 I too like horses. Which is exactly why I love my manual Jeep! See, a long time ago horses were the main form of transport on the battlefield. When the enemy fired up on a column of soldiers the horses got chopped up as well. Along comes the "manual" Jeep. No more dead horses on the battlefield! So in a significant way, the Jeep saved many many horses from a grisly end. When I see an EV on the battlefield, I'll be interested, but that won't be happening anytime soon, if ever. If the grid goes down (a real possibility) and you drive an EV, you better have a horse or a nice bike.
I had to diag & repair my boss’s 99, similar issue except it was the microswitch in the b pillar that determines when the top is fully closed was always open. So he went to close it and the motor never stopped closing, that was some carnage.

Nice diag. I have an automatic transmission in my 2014 Mustang GT. I have a bad left knee so a lot of clutch action really aggravates it. My car is still a lot of fun with the automatic.
Excellent troubleshooting of this over-engineered system built with cheap parts.

We have become very spoiled with OBD2 and later cars with data pids. Even your cheapest scan tools give u data. I am working on a 95 Civic that is OBD1. And I had to use some logic that Ivan has really helped me with. The old MT 2400 has all the info on that car, including pin outs. It was failing smog and several shops couldn’t fix it. Running full rich. Pegging the O2 sensor rich. First I got a set of injectors at Pick Your Part, and tested them with the little pulse tool. Old and “new” injectors were all very close. Still full rich. Coolant temp sensor faulty. Car will pass now. I had already checked the map because it’s easy. But the temp sensor is harder to get at. We have to b Ivanlike in being systematic and determined.
Nice job Bill! Computerized cars with no live data are the hardest to diagnose for sure :)
I like your methodical approach, and I think I would have done the same thing given the relays are grouped in a double pack. But, if the relays were single, given the age of the vehicle and the fact I have these in stock, I would have started with swapping them out first.

One of the first thongs I bought was a test light when I started working on cars. That was back in the late 60s and I still have a test light to this day at 71 years old. I'm only on my second test light. I stepped on the first one and broke it years ago and went right out and bought a new one.
The emergency road-side repair would've been a good spray of strong De-Oxit or of 99% Isopropyl alcohol into that switch. Thanks again for showing us how it is done using an orderly approach guided by skill and using basic tools.
Interesting at 2:26 in the method of operation it says "no speedometer signal greater than 5kph" but to operate it requires the parking brake to be engaged.
Fixing it the old fashioned way. You need to get yourself a manual version Ivan, throw your tools in and do your road trips in it. 🙂😉
Being allowed to take a spin is the icing on the cake. I'd love to say i've driven a porshe regardless of MAN or AUTO. 🙂

Nice to see that Porsche engineers continue the long tradition of competing for the RUBE GOLDBERG AWARD in the "automatic convertible tops" category. I knew a guy that made a comfortable living restoring automatic convertible tops in 1960's classic cars; mostly Lincolns & Fords. His calendar was always booked solid for MONTHS in advance $$.

I had a boss that bought his dream car, it was a 2009 corvette. He bought it with an auto, i thought it was weird. My truck had a manual transmission. One day we went to lunch and took my truck. About half way to where we were gonna eat he asked me if i could teach him how to drive it.... holy crap! He was like 45 yrs old...
First tool is a Printer & paper to print all the diagrams, then a test light...😁

I am so with you on that. I learned to shift gears sitting on a pile of blankets on top of the parking brake in a 1960 Porsche. Why ruin it?

I had a manual 6 speed sport model and it took 3 months for my leg to stop aching due to the heavy clutch.
I could not see but did the handbrake on warning lamp still work?
I will answer your comment at the end. I'm a fan of sports cars however I'm not a fan of manual transmissions. I can and do know how to drive them, but I choose not too because in town there is just way too much shifting involved. Highway driving is fine but you would have to pay me to drive a manual in town on a daily basis. I had a 2003 Ford Mustang GT with the 4.6L V8 and it was an automatic. Best decision I ever made and still a very fun car. Manuals are not for everyone myself included.

Doesn't that switch also control parking brake light so you could have seen it wasn't illuminating and gone straight for that?

Ivan I agree with you 100%. Why ruin the fun a a Sports Car with an Automatic Transmission. Main reason I still drive my 17 year old G35 with a 6 speed Manual.
I had this problem with my 1999 Boxster the other day. I was all set to get out my volt meter and test light, and then I realized that I just needed to pull the hand brake, and felt kinda dumb.
It is interesting that first mechanics were unable to deal with "smart" cars but now modern technicians are unable to deal with "dumb" cars. If the diagnosis requires a scanner or not seems to be the new dividing line.
Just a suggestion big guy, it would be great to see the expression on either the owner’s reaction when you fix things so fast or the shop foreman itself or whoever you’re dealing with at the shop.
If you could fill not as a little bonus each time you get a good reaction I think that would be cool!

I believe you can manually shift it in "manual " mode so at least you can still have fun driving it.

Before I even watch this I'm making a guess that you found a missing ground by putting a test light to a circuit. Gur instinct before I even get into it LOL
During your diagnosis, the top didn't move. You closed the door and it worked. Later, the door was open and the top worked. Can you explain? Great troubleshooting!! Also, I feel it's redundant on Porsche's logic, to have a sensor for "speed under 5 mph" and parking brake on.

Porsche parking brake micro-switch: $900. 😂. I agree with the automatic tranny sentiment. Why buy a sports car with and auto??!!!
What's sad is most folks don't know how to drive standard. I learned on my grandfather's farm truck years ago. If you learn how to drive them, they are actually pretty fun.
Also, I think WD and quick cycling would have fixed the switch. But hey, they had a new one.
