  • In the first episode of: Will it Sharpen, Josh surprises Kyle with a Benchmade Infidel. The single bevel, spear point, dagger style can be a challenge to some but Kyle breezes through coasting on practice with these blades.
    The Infidel is sharpened at about 30 degrees and you can check this using the sharpie method we show in this video: • What is Edge Angle? Ho...
    Sharpen each side of the dagger on the beveled side and remember to stop with the tip of the knife in the middle of the belt or abrasive plate, this will create a sticky sharp tip.
    Once a burr has been created along the full length of the blade all the way out to the tip then switch to a fine abrasive.
    First, polish the edge with the bevel, and then finally remove the burr on the back, non-beveled side, of the blade. This will protect the chisel grind of the knife. Using a leather strop to remove the burr is a good option, however it may require alternating sides on the beveled side and the flat side before the burr falls off.

      The principles are the same. I recommend using the leather strop to push the burr off the non-beveled side. And don't forget to increase the sharpening angle a little bit. The Infidel is right about 30 degrees so using the 20 degree guide will remove a lot more material and create a taller bevel (and it will take you a long time to get sharp). Otherwise you're in for a fun process and a sharp knife!

      The process is really no different than sharpening most knives. You may throw some sparks on the high carbon blade but they sharpen really well. Set the angle, raise a burr, then refine with the X4 or 12,000 grit belt. We'll show sharpening chef's knives in an upcoming episode.

    For the infidel, I would reprofile the tip first, then sharpen it with KME sharpener with 15 degrees angle. First, using 240 grit, then 400, then lastly, 800 grit. I would stop at 800 to give the edge a factory sharpened look. Then I would strop off the burr using just a plain leather.

    Hey guys - great video's. I have a coupe hard ones for ya - how to you sharpen your leatherman saw and what about hairdressing scissors? Thanks

    • @WorkSharpOutdoor
      @WorkSharpOutdoor  4 года назад +1

      Saws are not sharpened like knives. The serrated blade can be sharpened, we'll talk about that in an upcoming episode, a diamond rod or ceramic rod will help you there, especially if it's tapered. You may be able to extend the life of a saw by using a diamond plate to remove and straighten any burrs or bent teeth but that's about it. As for barbers shears, we have an episode coming up on that. use fine abrasives only - I recommend ceramic. Only remove material from the top of the bevel, not the back side, you do not want your shears to gap. A little sharpening goes a log way with scissors. There are RUclips videos out there about this if you can't wait for ours in a few weeks.

But I’d like to see the WS Gurus show me the way in a full length video please....I did say “please”....

    • @WorkSharpOutdoor
      @WorkSharpOutdoor  4 года назад +1

      Hey Phill, what a fun video that would be! Perhaps we can work it into the line up... for now here are some tips. As far as making a bowie knife from scratch, I'd recommend starting with a blank, or at least using another tool to grind the primary, the Blade Grinder is not the best tool for the job there. However, I have personally used the Blade grinder to shape wood and G10 handle material and it works very well. And of course it can create an edge after a primary grind is established. The same goes for a chef's knife - the edge is the easy part, and shaping the handle is possible, but grinding the rest of the knife is a big task for the sharpener. Re-profiling the slicer to a single bevel... easy. Sharpen the one side repeatedly until you have removed enough material that no more bevel remains on the back side, then hone the burr away with the 12,000 grit belt holding the knife nearly flat on the sharpener. If it were my own knife I may do this over time, using the knife until it needs to be sharpened, then sharpening only one side and removing the burr from the back. Over time, continue to only sharpen the one side and eventually you'll have a single bevel and you won't shorten the lifespan of the slicer.

    • @phillo1818
      @phillo1818 4 года назад

      That is awesome advice. I hadn’t thought of the very heavy grinding of the blank before using the WSKO but your absolutely right. Also I’ll just keep sharpening the slicer and Chef knives at 15* single bevel. Thank you!

    Да, ребятки. Поразили дважды (минимум): Посмотрите сами на свой рисунок про углы: где у вас 20 градусов нарисовано, и при этом вы точно! не получите 40 градусов фаски режущей кромки - просто сами на бумаге нарисуйте по своим инструкциям и измерьте полный угол. И второе: когда человек елозил по ленте, он точно не удерживал клинок горизонтально. А всё потому что не прикладывал его на площадку. И потому угол, который он настроил (20 градусов) - это полная ерунда.
    Automatic Google translate:
    Yes, guys. Struck twice (minimum): Look for yourself at your drawing about the angles: where you have drawn 20 degrees, and at the same time you are for sure! do not get a 40 degree chamfer of the cutting edge - just draw on paper yourself according to your instructions and measure the full angle. And second: when a man crawled along the tape, he definitely did not hold the blade horizontally. And all because he did not put it on the site. And therefore the angle that he adjusted (20 degrees) is complete nonsense.
    I have such device and have an experience. I was waiting from you better result.
