Great video haven’t been on here for awhile for it to see what you was up to I also use Lightroom on an iPad not as posh as yours but a very good one I pay that with affinity photo which is excellent as it’s a full program like the desktop and for removing junk dodgy and burning and all that stuff I personally think it’s better than photo shop and it’s a one-off payment of about £50 definitely worth a go. Great video, currently I am using a iPad Pro 2018 but with only the base model of 64gb storage, it isn’t ideal for editing RAW files. So now I am definitely considering the 1tb IPad Pro M1, will be extremely useful for editing whilst away from home. Then just a case of syncing to Creative Cloud to finish edits on my home computers, also as I do a lot of high speed continuous shooting for sports, culling on the iPad Pro is so much better. Thanks again
If you’re planning an upgrade anyway then I always think it’s smart practice to go for the most storage you can reasonably afford. Photo editing aside, it’s always good to have space for extra videos and whatnot! These devices end up being essential tools for all parts of our lives so small storage can be limiting, even with cloud syncing. Do you sync and use Lightroom on your home computer or do you re-import into Lightroom Classic? Thanks for watching!
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography storage is essential which is why I had to invest in a Nas drive to hold countless raw files as backups. When I am at home I mainly use classic and reimport into classic, depending on what machine I am using. Due to the lack of storage space on my current iPad, I have never imported raw files onto it. But seeing as I already have the 2nd Gen Pencil, it really should be used more.

Thank you for your video… I’ve been using LR/iPad for a while… Migrating from my 2017 Lenovo Windows. I use LR for personal and professional, my library has 30K+ photos and I have a selection of 9K pictures that I really like, I am trying to export them at once (9K+) and it doesn’t work. I’ve open a ticket at adobe already, at this point I am using iPad for editing and my PC to “Admin work”. I agree with you, it’s a nice tool, but I am still skeptical about “Pro” use. I have the 2020 12.9 1TB model and everything is stored locally (+-400GB) and it’s a beast. Hopefully Adobe will fix this bug. I have an average of 1K photos per customer to be sent and it’s taking 3 times more to export on my iPad than my PC, so I still using my PC to export it. Keep going. Love your video!

Great tutorial.. Definitely for me as I only have an ipad pro.. I do have the apple pencil tho I find that really helps with masking.. I do have a question tho I have just got myself a grey card but I am a bit unsure how to set the custom Wb with the dropper on light room I have taken a shot of the grey card in the place I want to shoot the subject and taken the other shots. But then how do a set the WB. With the dropper for all of my shots.?.. I will definitely be watching this video again. Thank you. 😎

My question stems from an photo editor's point of view: May one *benefit* from Apple's Mini-LED display for the M1 iPad Pro 12.9' during post-processing (in Photoshop Lightroom)? Or will one only get to witness the "glory" brightness of 1000 nits and beyond *only* when *viewing* HDR content? I've been told that Apple's new XDR projects at around 500/ 600 nits during normal usage. Do you notice any micro-contrast improvements when editing on the 12.9' mini-LED vs the normal 11'? Please advise, and thank you in advance.

Great video and edits! I have a question i hope you can answer. I’ve noticed multiple times when i import photos to my iPad just like your process, my creative cloud isn’t syncing with my mobile iPhone/Lightroom device as quick! They appear to be stuck in the cloud. When i go to my iphone/Lightroom mobile it shows just 3-5 photos I’ve just imported and it takes hours if not days for these to all to populate even my edits that where done on my iPad. Do you know why this keeps happening? I’ve tried signing in and out devices and costumer support doesn’t seem to have an answer. 🤦🏻♂️

At the beginning when you made that folder with all your images where does that get saved in the cloud? Just trying to determine what size iPad I need if the images are saved to locally or are they saved in the cloud.
When you import the photos do they get stored on your iPad? Is there off-device functionality? Meaning, can you copy your RAW files onto an external SSD and then simply Add them to the catalog and keep the RAW files on the SSD? Trying to determine how much storage I actually need on the iPad. It would be ideal if I could simply get a 256gb iPad and attach a 4TB SSD.
This is awesome. I do have a question tho. When I edit photos in my iPad and then send them to my iPhone, for some reason it doesn’t look quite the same. I wouldn’t say they look desaturated on the iPhone, but there’s definitely something missing with the colors. I really don’t which of the devices may have the problem, but I’m going insane cuz I never know how are the final photos actually looking :/

Reason I ask is I’m wanting to avoid purchasing a new desktop/Mac and instead upgrade to the newest IPad Pro Max, but Lightroom mobile appears to lack much of the calibration and print functions of Lightroom Classic. Thanks again!
Hey Jeff, thanks for watching. To be honest I do very little printing myself (although I have literally just bought a Canon photo printer) so it's not something I feel I can give you any kind of real assistance on. From my basic understanding however, I believe that printing directly from LR mobile is limited just to going 'Share > Print' and printing using a printer wirelessly connected to your iPad. It may be that it's better to adjust your settings to export your image to camera roll first and then print from there. Alternatively, use your new iPad for 95% of your work but keep your existing desktop/mac solely for printing purposes. Sorry I can't be more help!
Thanks for the video. Do you have any tips about syncing albums and photos from Lightroom to Lightroom Classic on desktop. Ultimately, I would like to store all my folders on hard drives through the desktop app, but Lightroom and my iPad Pro would be useful while on the road.
Hi Ben, I’m actually not all that well up on syncing between LR and LRC but it’s something I’m planning to look into and hopefully do something more in depth on in the future. Sorry I can’t help right now!
I personally use my own presets and then just adjust the colors to suit my liking
Brilliant video Andrew, I learned a lot especially pasting to numerous photos. Just wondering what you do when you get back home with regards to transferring the raw files to LrClassic so that you can free up space on your iPad. Just asking for a friend who could only stretch to the M1 iPad with 128gb 😜
Hey Phil, thanks so much for watching! I have to admit, my work flow between devices like that isn't good. Some of the time i don't then import to lr classic but just lr on the desktop version so everything still syncs across. Other times I will have the images on my ipad so I can quickly edit and proof on location but then entirely reimport the set from my SD card into lr classic and start from scratch. Neither is exactly a great solution but then adobe also doesn't really offer any kind of mass export into Classic option, which would be tremendously helpful. Likely because it badly wants to discontinue lr classic and just support the one version!
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography I'm late with this comment, but it is quite easy to bring the raw images across into Lightroom Classic. Once everything has synced from the ipad to the cloud, you can simply move the images to a local folder within Classic and all of the raw files will be downloaded. However, I prefer to import raw files to Classic then sync the imported folder to the cloud and work with the synced Smart Previews on the ipad. Although Adobe doesn't advertise it, Classic works quite well with the cloud-based mobile workflow.
Hi Andrew is there any reason why you wouldn't import the Photos with syncing paused, cull the photos then sync the ones you want to keep? I find this quicker over all because you don't have to do the second lot of waiting while Lr syncs with the cloud
Odd question. But what level of brightness do you edit in? I don’t want my photos too over or under exposed when sharing them to social media or prints. What do you recommend?
Can you export easily back onto the external hard drive so as not to store anything on the ipads internal hard drive?

It’s honestly never been a problem for me when editing images. It’s not even something I notice when in Lightroom.

Thanks Steve! I guess just down to preference really. It's not necessarily a 'better' way, it's just the way I work. That said, with numbers you can give different numbers to different shots you might want, rather than the more binary approach of pick/reject. Thanks for watching!
Nice photos mate. I like the process of editing on an iPad more than on a laptop but really wish they'd find a way to stop the image from blurring when using the sliders

@@AndrewLanxonPhotography after a couple of weeks of use it’s less distracting than it was at the start. It has changed my workflow a bit but not being able to see ‘live’ the adjustment I’m making does slow me down a bit when I’m making fine edits.
@@Ben-vg1lw ok just got the 11" ipad pro m1 (512GB) and noticed this. No one talked about this point and was going crazy as it felt i am the only one having this issue. I guess the process being non-constructive requires recalculating/re-rendering everything when you change something? Anw, the case of one pair of eyes not being able to notice/capture everything, but the possibility of spending more time for an "end-to-end" workflow review without using it enough. Especially when zoomed in it beats me how one cannot notice it or find it annoying.

Hi. Its very good video. but you didn't mention anything about Watermark OR Logo. How can we add customized logo to the photos?
Can you work on the iPad Pro from external ssd. So you import and export them from and to same ssd?
It would have been faster if you’ve copied your photos in an SSD drive first as an additional back up (which will also import to LR faster since SSD drives are faster than most of UHS I or II cards). You can try culling your photos also from the ssd drive before importing, this will save you time during import since you will only be importing photos that you want to edit.
Hi Andrew, your iPad Lightroom videos have been very helpful but one question I have is can you use Lightroom CC like you have here but with no internet connection? So for instance could I import a bunch of raws off a memory card to the iPad, edit then export them like you did here all without having to connect? I ask because I watched another video and when they went to export to files Lightroom wouldn't do it until they'd connected to Wifi. I see here you exported to Camera Roll, since that's local I'm assuming it doesn't need internet to be able to do that?
Hey Cal, thanks for watching! So from my experience, if you imported the images into Lightroom on that device (say, your iPad or iPhone) then you should be able to edit and export them even without an internet connection as it simply reads the file locally. Files synced from the cloud that you may have imported with other devices will not be available for export until you have a connection, but likely will be available to edit in a lower resolution format. This is how I frequently work on my iPad and I’ve never had an issue with it and as far as I’m aware there aren’t any particular import settings I have around local files - everything is just default. So you should be fine!
I was looking into this but then read the m1 performs basically the same as the non m1 chip, the A12z. Apparently it’s bc the apps aren’t even optimized for the m1 so the a12z is apparently just as good, kinda surprised me .
Do you have experience with the other iPads chips, like the a12Z?

When I import my Nikon raw files the portrait images need to be rotated 90 degrees after imported. Your portrait files appear to load upright. Is this a setting in your camera or during import?

I recommend buying a 50pgb SSD drive to store your photos, and keeping it apart from the iPad. Especially if you live in a theft prone country!

Has anyone done the download speed test using a SD UHS-II card reader with a UHS-II rated card with the M1 iPad and a non M1 iPad? Or a USB-C SSD download/upload with a M1 iPad and a non M1 iPad?
Just to check to see if the interface USB-C/Thunderboldt as speed bottleneck or the internal storage in the device. As a photographer download speeds from the SD cards and transfer a speed to a portable SSD like the Samsung T5 are important to me currently

Great Video. One question. When you import the pictures from your sd card, are these stored locally or in the cloud?
That's a great question, Andy and not one I've really considered. It's a bit confusing, but I think I have an answer for you. When I import raw images into Lightroom they DON'T appear in my iPad's camera roll, suggesting that only store in the cloud. However, when I go into Setting>General>Storage and then look at Lightroom, it says the app is taking up 48GB of space, so evidently it IS storing those raw files locally, along with any others I've downloaded for local editing from my existing LR cloud library. From my playing around just now, it doesn't look like you can individually delete images from local storage (and keep them in the cloud) but you can go to LR settings and under 'Local storage' you can 'Clear Cache'. Currently my cache is 47GB deep. that'll delete all the local raws, freeing up space on my iPad, but won't delete anything from the cloud. However, if you save images to albums when you import, you can also click on the three dots next to the album and select 'Clear Cache' to just remove that album's local files.
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography as far as I understand it, the full RAW files are uploaded to the iPad's internal storage, and then removed as they are synced to the cloud. Copies are then stored in the cache. You can also enable "Only Download Smart Previews" (in the settings menu under the cloud icon), which then stores only proxies of the original files in the cache, to save on internal storage. My cache is just over half the size of the cloud storage used, so it makes quite a difference.
If you want the files stored locally as well, there are a couple of ways to do this. If you import from SD directly into Lightroom, afterwards you can select all photos and export them (as original), either to files or to camera role. The opposite is also possible - import from SD directly onto local storage (either camera roll, or directly to files if you want to organise them in a particular way or want them separate from your personal pictures). From here you can then import them into lightroom.
Also, thanks for the video, makes me more certain of going iPad pro instead of buying a new MacOS computer. I currently edit my photos on a 6th gen iPad and the process is a joy, although it isn't quite smooth. I am really looking forward to some extra computing power and screen real estate for editing! My main issue is size, although I am leaning towards the 12.9", simply because it will be my main/only device. Any thoughts on this?

Hey Bradley, I actually don't use a screen protector. The pencil doesn't cause any marks on the screen (Apple would be fools if they'd have done that!) but I do have it in a case when I'm travelling, just in case. If you're worried, it's smart to get a case as it helps to keep them safer for longer and also usually means they're in better condition at such point you end up selling it on eBay or whatever.
Do you prefer editing in the ipad pro m1 or in a laptop? Which is easier to use?
Good day. I do all of my photo editing on an iPad Pro. There are a couple of features of Lightroom that I cannot figure out, and would like a video explaining these, or tell me if they don’t work on the iPad.
First the select sky trick to clean up the transition between the sky and the ground/trees. Instruction says: Select sky, subtract from mask select sky, which gives you the transition area, then invert mask 1 (I think), but I get the whole picture as the mask. What am I doing wrong?
Second, there is a place when you are editing sharpening where, on a computer you hold down a key to show how much of the picture will be affected. Who can you do that on the iPad?
Also, I just kind of came across that if you hold your finger on the picture that you are editing, it will show you the “before” image. Tell people about this, it is handy
can you tether during a photoshoot from camera to iPAD? ALso can you do it wirelssly?
There are ways to tether wirelessly using the camera's built-in Wifi and the Canon camera connect app. There are third party options too I think (CamRanger and Arsenal both do this) and I think Tethertools might have a cable for iPad (though I'm not sure). Ideally I'd like the iPad to just allow for HDMI input and I can plug my camera straight in and use it as a zero-latency display but that's not possible!
Do you calibrate your iPad?
I noticed the images being blurry the app while they are actually hair sharp on my pc....
What Storage size do you have? Trying to decide if I need the 16gb of ram / 1TB model or go with the 512gb or lower models.
As of right now apps can’t use more than 5gb of ram at any given time. So the extra ram isn’t gonna make a big difference, unless you plan on having every app open at once. I had the same dilemma, but ended up going with an 11”/256gb.
I have the 12" with 512gb which is plenty, as long as I keep tabs on how many raw files I have stored locally. I don't use it as my main edit station (yet) but do use it for projects on location so it shouldn't get too astonishingly full of raws as my laptop and desktop do.
That said I also probably wouldn't want to go with a lower amount of storage if you're primarily wanting to use it for photo and video production. Even with Adobe's generous 1tb of cloud storage it still requires you to be quite proactive in managing local files and I am really messy when it comes to file management/life.

Hey Kellie! I've only used the 12 inch ipad, but I do a lot of editing on my iPhone when I'm on the move and that's a lot smaller! So I'd say the 11 inch model would still be great if that's what you have the budget for.
