The closest example I can think of similar to this scenario is the unofficial 007 movie 'Never Say Never Again' which was a remake of Thunderball.

That is a good example. The only other ones I can remember are all things that didn't end up happening - a sequel to the original Stargate movie that would have ignored the shows entirely, a Whedon-less remake of the Buffy movie - and just the movie, since that's all they had the rights for, and a cimatic remake of original Battlestar Galactica which would have ignored the reimagined version entirely.

Godzilla 1998 was sort of similar. Made 3 years after Godzilla Vs Destroroyah (1995) and 1 year before Godzilla 2000 (1999, despite the name). But even that isn't as pointless, since it was made for an entirely different audience.
Devil May Cry 5 was recently made, despite a series reboot 6 years prior. But that was more along the lines of Capcom changing their plans after the terrible reception.

Don't forget the Night of the Living Dead remake that was made way back in 1990!
But to be fair, those are a franchise in the sense that all of them are about zombies while also presenting some deeper themes. There are no overarching plot elements or recurring characters.

@@75aces97If you were six in that era, or you visited the toy section of a Wal-Mart or a Toys-R-Us, they were definitely hyping the My Buddy doll. Plus, Chucky has the exact same basic dimensions of a My Buddy doll, significantly larger than a Cabbage Patch doll. Seriously, google My Buddy Doll. It's even got the rainbow striped shirt and overalls (different color). About the only real difference is that the Good Guy's doll had a moving mouth and eyes while the My Buddy doll had a static plastic face.

Chucky definitely looked like a knockoff version. It was a few years past my time so I don't remember exactly how popular it was, except that it was a big enough hit to stay on the market for a while and get a Kid Sister spinoff toy. Was it popular enough at the time that it had parents assaulting each other at Christmas time like the Cabbage Patch? I can only remember a few toys reaching that level.

One thing Bob didn't mention is that Chucky also appeared in the comic book Hack/Slash, about a slasher movie survivors who goes around the country with a heroic Jason-lookalike killing other supernatural killers. One of those being, as I said, Chucky, in a really fun romp that, IIRC, Mancini actually co-wrote. You can find the story in Hack/Slash Omnibus 1.

    Has that ever happened before?
Yes- Night of the Living Dead was remade (1990) while Romero was still producing sequels to the original (Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead...) Also, let's not forget that Dawn of the Dead was remade as its own unrelated thing. Also, of course, there was the "other" sequels to the original Night of the Living Dead in the Return of the Living Dead series... Bob, if you haven't done a "Movies Are Weird" episode on the copyright kerfuffle of Romero's Night of the Living Dead (whose public-domain status probably gave us the zombie genre as we know it, since anyone can do anything with this movie, including making crap like Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Hellbound, Zombified, Flesh-Eating, Sub-Humanoid Living Dead, Part IV (it goes by different titles)), which of course also gave us the Fulci "Zombie" series... I'd say it's high time for that episode.

PS The show is really good, easily my favourite horror show since Hannibal got cancelled (and apparently Chucky shares my opinion of that), and it just got renewed for a second season. I liked the new characters but I hope season 2 has more Fiona Dourif and possibly more Jennifer Tilly though I get she’d be a little harder to get for a full season. The way in which the remake turns everything into shlocky paranoia about technology suggests the producers don't really get it.
Some premises, like Child's Play, need to remain based in a supernatural element. This prevents them from being quickly dated (the remake will fall out of relevance as soon as corporations sell people on a different style of smart device). It preserves mystery. And it invites the viewer to imagine sinister inner workings that are darker than anything that can be visibly shown on screen.

@@qty1315 what? Those were all continuations or spin-offs. This is the only reboot.
Why do people assume everything with a different name after the first series is a reboot??? I see all the time and it's dumb

I actually quite enjoyed the remake but I'm also still anticipating the mini series from Mancini himself
They both go in different directions and it's rare to see a franchise split and kind if coexist like this

Sorry but it was awesome. As an ACTUAL AI researcher, they did a shocking realistic job of how it all starts and even a great way to give it more powers(ALSO very realistic). The technique is called reinforcement learning. They even did a good job of how it gets there. The same AI isn't in every doll, only ONE. Most movies would skip the fact that AI and robotics companies do rigorous testing, this one didn't even skip the return, fact is it could take only one disgruntled employee to cause the robot apocalypse.

    Pretty much, screw the rest.

Yeah, the remake through me for a loop. I saw Cult of Chucky and thought it was interesting, then all of a sudden there's a reboot but now that I know that they aren't even related I think it sucks.

Sorry, but Mancini ran the franchise in to the ground. I'll still watch anything he does coz I love OG Chucky, but the remake is more enjoyable than anything Mancini has put out in 20 years.

Hey Bob, for future reference, at 6:46 your use of the word Queer is a BIG slur when used as a general umbrella term for LGBT+ stuff, while the use of it as a singular self-identifier “I’m queer” is fine.
For future reference, can you use the more inclusive term LGBT+, and not the genera-form word with some still very bigoted roots? Thanks if you read this.

Bob, I can help. I have a ten yearold... I'm familiar with the Total Drama franchise... it didn't need a prequel. It's really pretty awful all around to be honest.

I have no sympathy for Don Mancini, ever since he got more and more control over the franchise, it's gotten pretty "meh" (I'm looking at you seed) I was hoping the remake would breath new life but it turned out to be just OK. Oh well, maybe the show will redeem him somehow

The moment I heard the "total drama" comments, I looked up the original air date. It's a decade old, which is less than I thought.
I can say the "prequel" or whatever is less irritating to have on in the background than the original.

  • @marcosdheleno

of course not, no movie needs a remake, the same way no movie NEEDS a sequel, hell, no movie even need to exist at all. however, they do, and more important for movies, need is overrated, movies happen, because, and you dont need to be a genius to understand this concept, people want to make money, and so will make them, so they can gain more than they invested in the making of said movie.
"but movie is an art!" so? the sistine chapel is 100% art, but it was also done for nothing more than money and fame. so i will say this again, need is not something that matters when it comes to movies. it never was, and it never will.
