I remember buying this from a local shop in my town when I was a kid. Had alot of fun showing it to my friends.
I think the coordinating hand movements are the biggest secret to the trick. Very smooth

They’d show this at the mall but never explain the string part before you bought it. So when you went home as a kid and opened yours, you wondered why the worm was dead 😂
When I was a kid there was a store that had a shelf full these things, and mounted on the top of the shelf was a TV that replayed clips of this toy in action, but didn't explain how it worked. I wanted one so bad. The cashier explain to me and my grandmother that that toy does not move on its own, and that it uses a hidden string. She said this to us because she was tired of all the complaining parents that had cane back to the store claiming false advertisement.
