Waldron's knuckleball is probably more special than many fans realize. I didn't study the Niekros or RA Dickey's knuckleballs but Tim Wakefield didn't always produce the best results, he got lit up about half the genes he pitched but he was highly valued as an innings eater and severely messed up hitter timing making other pitchers on the staff more effective.
In this game it looks like for whatever reason the knuckleball wasn't very deceptive the first inning and Waldron got ambushed for those 3 runs. That can happen but it's a really good sign that Waldron limited the damage to these two RBI hits and Waldron completed 6 innings.
It's also noteworthy how important Arraez RBI single was in the second inning. The Padres had runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out and Arraez was the last chance to score them. It would have been a downer if the Padres wasted the opportunity but Arraez turned that around and the Profar followed that up with a 2 run HR. Really turned the game around from what could have been a big negative.
Anyway, the wildcard race is tightening up this last week before the deadline.All the teams ahead of the Padres except the Mets lost today.
The Padres probably need another starter or a couple relievers that can be counted on for about 3 innings a week not to replace anyone for performance reasons but anticipating that some might not be able to pitch their full turn every week to the end of the season and you want pitchers well rested for the postseason. Maybe the answers is already in house. If Brito can pitch half as well as Vasquez is pitching, that might work. It's probably unreasonable for him to pitch equally as well as Vasquez with fewer learning opportunities but you never know, surprises can happen.
