- People buy new things for that little charge of excitement to their day, for that little dopamine charge. But try finding pleasure in accomplishing daily life with what you have, with basic tools be it kitchen utensils or clothing etc. There is something to be enjoyed in that simplicity and accomplishment.
In my neighbourhood - garages are packed with “stuff” to the point they don’t put cars in them in the winter and it routinely hits -20 to -35 for 4 months of the year - insane!
Yes, my neighbor has garage sale stuff that amounts to maybe $100 in her garage because she never knows when she might throw a garage sale 😂. In the mean time, $80,000 valued vehicles sit in the driveway exposed to the elements.
That's insane. We do have problems with hoarding in the UK but our garages are so small there's not lots you can fit in there so sports equipment or bicycles is usually what goes into them. Most people here have their cars parked right outside their house so they are kept off the road but I would question why I have all that stuff in my garage and if it all got destroyed what would I remember of it?

6:30 I understand that Google uses location services to compare the interest/history of the persons near you (with other similar markers) and offers each of you recommendations of your peers. This is why it appears our phones are listening in when we are with others.
Interesting I had a huge addiction to this before my wife put her foot down but helped me realize I was looking for dopamine hits and these things won’t make me happy
Yeah I think if we question why we are addicted to buying stuff it helps in recovery. I only buy things I need and know for definite I will use and if I'm not using it, immediately it goes to someone else so it never piles up. I suppose as well when you have lots of hobbies and interests it's easier to buy stuff but I have to question if I'm going to use this till it breaks and if I have the room to organise this beautifully. If not I just don't buy it.
For me, I have definitely been negatively affected by my shopping addiction. I’ve cured it and paid every loan (and closed every credit). However I still get the urge. I realise I buy tiny minuscule things that I don’t even really want. But it’s easier to obtain than my more expensive real wants.
I understand. I am probably much older than you. through the years you make more. There was a saying "the more you make the more you spend". It is so true. So if in the future you make more.... enjoy life, enjoy adventures, but spend on material things like you are still broke.
Agree with your assessment that FB/IG is WAY better than Google/youtube at target with ads. I absolutely hate advertising in general, as 99% of it is completely irrelevant to me. FB is the first platform that actually present ads that are often of interest to me 🤔
Reasons people buy: 1) items are tools- use them to accomplish a greater goal 2) use them to get status 3) use goods to belong - be part of a community like Patagonia 4) Boredom
One of those lock boxes are good as well where you put an addictive object like your credit card or phone in it and you program to lock it for a certain time period.
Hoarders is another absolutely amazing show in addition to the others on that network. Its not difficult to piece together the human connection to shit!!!
But I don't have an addiction to buying new things. I do, however, have an addiction to: - not starving to death - not freezing to death - keeping my dependents emotionally neutral rather than crying all the time
My take...the Brain is such a powerful organ, (runs the whole body) but weak as it can be brainwashed so easily. If it can be swayed to follow a leader, do harm to others...it can be convinced to shop and spend money. It's how to keep the economy going. And the big businesses know it. I stay away from Instagram. What I have seen from my own experience. I don't have an addiction or am I an hoarder. I have always hated shopping but can spend money. And when I needed something or was going to work on a project; I had to go out. Now I can go online and it's at my door. Sometimes the item sits for 6 months before I use it for the reason I bought it.
Interesting question and such a thoughtful and thought-provoking answer. Interestingly, I watched your post on Ayrton's markers today on IG and had a Temu add for number markers shortly after.
I continually purge after being someone who held onto things far too long in my last life. Now I value my time with people more than holding onto things longer than necessary. A problem is the inability to fix something at a low cost or compared to getting new. So to say this is just stuff getting' isnt completely true. from that perspective.imo

Thats kind of silly! Whats the evidence for these "evolutionary reasons"? You are making assumptions about the past, based on your presuppositions about that past!
It's a typical "materialist" explanation for everything, reducing everything to some logical evolutionary mechanism. I've watched shows on hunter gatherers and they like nothing better than lazing around on mats or hammocks between hunts.
