I really hope this one gets the same amount of views thanks to the 5,080 people who saw it I now have 400 subs!
credits harless rail videography for the return clip, hight water project for the after clip, the actual crash clip is from pat rich the photo that says rip is edited by me however I do not know where the original image came from reddit if you took that photo I will credit you.
remember this video is a re upload of the original i made only difference I removed the vtr clip the credit is in the description but I will put it here pat rich filmed the crash video. The video moments before the train crash is from the night water project. and the after math video is from harless rail videography. the rip picture was edited by me however the original photo source is unknown and finally the aftermath photo is from reddit! Their extremely lucky they didn't rupture the boiler
Hoo-boy! That's on the engineer & fireman. Engine crew are required to watch the road ahead and verbally confirm with each other for obstructions and misaligned switches as well as control signals. Just like driving a car, keep your eyes on the road. This is one of the first things we are taught in engine service.
The person who left the switch misaligned also bears culpability. When not in use, switches are to be left aligned for primary traffic/main line, not sidings/storage track.
And they are VERY lucky! It looks like the blast pipe and excavator hydraulic cylinders & arm angle prevented the excavator arm from going into the flue sheet; looks like the top knuckle of the excavator arm stopped right under the stack. This accident could otherwise have ended with a boiler explosion.
there very lucky they didn't get hurt! and they should have focused on the track more.
Wait how could they tell if the switch was aligned or not… both sides of that switch are white… I may be missing something here but there would be no indication about the alignment of the switch you have to be extremely close up to it to notice it. If it wasn’t so simple to see it the one the passengers call it out?
@@CrisisHedgehog The target on the switch (the four fins on top of the switchstand) has different colours, typically yellow and green. It the points are lined for the siding or storage track, the yellow target will be visible to traffic. If the points are aligned for primary traffic, then the green target will show. The target can be seen from several hundred feet away. The white thing seen in the video is a sign of some sort, and based on its placement may well have partially obstructed the view of the target: www.google.com/maps/@40.0049547,-76.1130277,2a,15y,315.15h,75.93t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sYOe94a73SkmpUNyuZfPdRA!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DYOe94a73SkmpUNyuZfPdRA%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D117.82379%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656
Secondly, the alignment of the switch points themselves can easily be seen from the engine by both engineer and fireman from at least 100 feet away, which is more than enough time for an engine running light at low speed to stop.
Also, the engineer was apparently operating at faster than the timetable's Restricted Speed rules.
@@CrisisHedgehog I think one may have been reflective or a different shade.
and how long it took the engineer to react to the hit, he was just sitting there doing nothing after it.

For anyone curious on the status of 475, they got her right back into service in 4 Days after this! Not sure anyone got hurt, but at least there was some good news to come out of this!
I was amazed! Everyone assumed that the 475 would be out for a year but no
I'm a bit late here, but I'm not amazed. I am, but I'm also not, if that makes sense.
Strasburg is the only place in the continental U.S.A I am aware of that runs steam locomotives every day like was done in the olden days of steam. I believe even the Union Pacific, the class one railroad worth billions, doesn't run 844 and 4014 with anything close to the demands of Strasburg. I also remember somewhere that 844 was sent to Strasburg for work even the Union Pacific didn't have the skilled workers for. The last time I was there, Disney had an engine or two in there for a complete overhaul. A complete overhaul.
The crew could have put 475 through a brick wall and within a week or two it would have been operating like nothing happened.
@@michaelmoses8745 Didn’t realize how good the strasburg was at repairs! Good for them
@@vwbubs1170
It's not so much they are good at repairs, it's just that they try to hold themselves to the same standards of an old school production steam shop. What Strasburg does is what used to be done all over the country. Now they are the only ones in the country that things in the new old fashioned way. They have to be this good, as they use steam daily. They even have freight traffic.
That's truly amazing. Long live the Strasburg and I hope someday there will be more railroads that run steam daily@@michaelmoses8745

Having the unpleasant experience of being a trainee fireman ( stoker U.S.) on a NA class steam Locomotive Puffing Billy Australia Google it) many years ago with a head on collision with another NA locomotive in the yard. One engine coming onto the front of the train while the other that brought the train into the platform was running around. We met at the points (switch) between number one track and the loop. Tank engines therefore no tender. It hit hard my engine at the back. I didn't jump but the first thing you think of is; am I going to get catapulted over the top of the boiler about the fire box which protrudes into the cab a fair bit? Also although Klinger boiler water level gauge glasses, I could have been scolded to death if they break but they a very strong. Not enough speed for derailment or much damage. The driver broke down with shock, I had to apply the hand brake, close the damper and check the boiler water level in the sight glass. The safety valve lifted due to the shock. Never got on a steam locomotive since, 37 years later.

and when that Amtrak crashed into a conraill on a siding
This is why amateur's shouldn't be running locomotive's, just saying.
I don't think there amateurs
Everyone is at fault here, a misaligned switch can be spotted if the engineers and conductors were paying attention. The rail maintenance crew failed to realign the switch after storing their hi-rail machine. Complete complacency on all party’s part. Glad everyone is ok though.
surprisingly I've heard no one is at fault! although train conducted should have looked
Somehow, even when the front section of the locomotive was obliterated, no steam or smoke came out. Maybe unless the smokebox is just a covering for the funnel.
