Both! I’ve seen videos of coin dealers who don’t know what goldbacks are and cannot test them. They are therefore skeptical. I imagine it would be quite easy to buy a chicken with a goldback though.

During Shft how can you verify authenticity? If grid down, so is internet. Granted gold is hard to break down to a smaller currency. I'm using pre 1964 dimes quarters and halves scrap silver. It 90% silver and has been a valuable currency for millenniums. I still say food water bullets and tools will be the new fiat currency. But I have been collecting silver since I was a kid. So I'm pretty well set on that. Scrap silver coins in bags. Plus the other supplies.
They're just chopping flakes off and weighing them in Venezuela right now, for haircuts, meals etc.. also in the olden days in Europe they used to cut coins in halfs and fourths. I would like to have some goldbacks, but it would have to be similar to the premium on a one ounce gold 🪙 coin.
A few years back I bought up several coins of trading silver. The coins are 1oz of .9999 silver and are scored where they can be broke into 1/4 for trading. At the time I thought they were just a novelty but I'm starting to view them now as a necessity.

The. Problem for me is a 50 dollar gold back costs 255.00 dollars. When I spend it I only get 200 in buying power. Fractional gold is much much cheaper.

Keep one on hand, wearing it if possible. If desperate to make a transaction offer the ring on your finger. You likely can make a deal and it stops others from assuming that you have a stockpile of gold - as one might assume if you pull out a gold coin or goldback. I thought that was "golden" SHTF advice.

I mean my 1928 double eagle I wear around my neck is my last resort but the 10- $5 1/10th American eagles fit easily in my wallet and Ive had to sell a couple of them in the past when I was in a pinch. I've been buying goldbacks for a couple years. The premium isn't really that high if you think about how much easier they are to use compared to fragments of gold that can be easily lost or stolen without being noticed.
How would one test the veracity of these goldbacks as an average person? Are you going to be able to pour vinegar on these without them getting damaged? Better to get small jewellery than what people are going to perceive as monopoly money.
Why not just use coinage. You can buy copper and silver coins and some of the silver and gold bars can be broken down into much smaller denominations. The markup on these bills just doesn’t make sense from a best bang for your buck standpoint.
