I'm new to painting and I wanted to ask: How do you know where the highlights stay and the shadows go? I've always been confused on how people painted so well and so realistically.
I paint sometimes, and if I'm right, then they used a reference photo and they used it to see where all of the shadows and highlights go. Hope this helps! : )
I know that I'm late but you can pick pictures for reference that have a clearly difference between shadows and highlights, I start painting black and white pics bc it was easier to recognize them I hope it helps
