hey guys im youtuber that makes vlogs and dance videos and ive been thinking of getting either this or the sony a6000. the 28 mp and screen on the samsung is nice but im seeing lots of people prefering the sony.which should i get?
I've been waiting for a review of this camera. Thanks for addressing the big questions about this camera - the buffer size and video crop in 4K. Great job!
Great review. Concise, articulate. I believe you have the first review of this camera. You also answered the questions about the buffer and cropped sensor. Thanks again, Mike P
Thanks for the review. I would like to know if you can use the camera while it is being charged? This would be great for time lapse recording with it connected to an external battery like a Go Puk.
finally! I've been waiting for its review. thanks for the review! I want to get this and I hope its doesn't go over my budget limit in my country currency.
Can I ask 2 follow up questions? A - can it be powered using USB, without a battery plugged in? You'll need a 5v, 1amp cable, such as a wall charger for phones to attempt this. Samsung's tech specs online say that it takes USB power as an input, but it's unclear if the battery is required. B - is there smooth hdmi out while taking stills? The HDMI out feature appears to be confirmed, although some previous Samsung cameras have ports, and no output. The key is to find out if it continues to output smooth video when stills are captured.
Editor's Note: Original post edited to reflect corrections. Mortar Art Sure. A. It depends. It won't power on while charging (when connected to computer) but works when connected to AC adapter provided battery is inserted. B. Re: HDMI see detailed answer below.
michaeljosh Hi again Michael; are you sure about both points? I've since found in the manual that the charger cable can power the camera when the battery is depleted, and that the hdmi out is likely limited to 1080p, rather than the NX1's 4k, but functions as expected in video mode.
michaeljosh Hi again Michael, Thanks heaps for clarifying these remaining points. It's very helpful. What I meant by smooth HDMI is output that is not interrupted. It's not really a huge concern if the screen doesn't go blank for too long, but I'm looking specifically at capabilities for using this camera on a UAV, and these are the 2 greatest concerns; can we power from our existing battery pack, and will our view from the aircraft be interrupted? It's great actually that Samsung has thought of this as a feature, although slightly unfortunate that there is still some blanking, as some UAV users will want this camera for photogrammetry, which can require longer exposures, which will no doubt blank the screen for longer!
How is the LCD screen in broad daylight? Can you do a comparison video with a6000/a5100? I'm torn right now, cannot decide between the 3, BTW, love how you did your review, simple and straight to the point!
Would you suggest this product for video reviews of tech products(smartphones etc)? I think it is the best option I can find for the price, and since it will be my main photo camera as well I think it is a great combination to cover my needs. Also, the Sony A6000 is at a similar price, but this camera supports 4K recording wouldn't it make more sense to get this product which will be more future-proof?
cfionthefly, @Anthony Thank you! Yeah it that's the main feature you're looking for I can see why you'd be concerned. But having said that, for the money, at least for the moment, there's nothing better.
Nicholas Spackman I can't seem to reply to your individual comment - so apologies if this isn't threaded. You use the camera while charging the battery via USB so as long as you're connected to the A/C adapter and not a USB port on a computer. Not exactly sure how it would behave with a Go Puk, but my feeling is that it should work.
What would be your prefered option for 1080p60fps recording at the same price? I can currently get a nx500 used for 250 usd but would rather buy the sony a6000 but can't find that used so that'd cost med 700 dollars or I'd have to wait until a used one pops up where I live. Would you get the nx500 for 250 dollars or wait until the a6000 is used somewhere to the same price or would you select a third camera? I'll be using it for 1080p60fps recordings. Vlogs and close up of my face with a green screen background... I'd just really like it to be good for pictures as well so the viewfinder on the a6000 is rather attractive. So what'd you pick if I wanted the best 1080p60fps recorder in the price range of the nx500 and a6000 that can still take decent pictures?
+ScrattleGG Hey there! Have you gotten a new camera yet? Sorry this reply comes 3 months late -- we just saw your comment. You’re definitely looking at the right two cameras. Ultimately we do think you’d be happier with the Sony A6000. It has the video specs you desire and it’s easier to import the video directly into your favorite editor. The NX500 requires an extra conversion step before the footage can be edited. With regard to still pictures, we think the Sony has a leg up in low light and Autofocus performance, and as you mentioned it has a viewfinder. Although the Sony is more expensive, it is a camera you can grow into and will last for a couple years regardless of what else may come out. If you have any more questions you may also email us so we can get back to you faster: ask@gadgetmatch.net Let us know how it goes!
GadgetMatch Damn that was really informative :) Thank you! Now what'd you recommend if I also want hdmi live throughput so I can use it as camera when I livestream
+J Dollar Hey there! Have you invested in a lot of Samsung lenses? If not we recommend the A6000. It's still a better value and performs better overall. Autofocus is very fast on the A6000, you'll also get a viewfinder so you can compose shots by looking into the camera. Video-wise, the NX500 has 4K so get the Samsung if you want that, although video on the A6000 is not bad at all either. Sorry we don't have an A6000 review up, but trust us, that particular Sony camera presents the best value for money.
GadgetMatch I would like to get NX500 but its not yet available in my country (UAE) and Amzon dont ship this particular item in UAE as well. My second option is NX300M since the screen tilt 180 degree and it is touch however in my place it is only available with 16-50mm lens kit (which i like better) I am just confuse bcoz it seems like NX300M originally comes with 18-55mm lens. So I was thinking if there might be some problem with 16-50mm lens kit (they call it international version and way much cheaper). Even cheaper that NX3000. Please advice.
Lacks EVF to be interesting for most DSLR or even mirrorlessshooters. It is a true letdown we getfrom Samsung time and time again in their NX-xxx and xxxx-series sadly. That would've made a big difference...
michaeljosh I think the RX1003 is fine, but find GM5 Panasonic the most impressive one. A sensor twice the size, a bit bigger, interchangable lenses and really very very good IQ. better than Canon APS-c for instance. Wow.
Drumming Tee Samsung is igoring "RUclipsrs", and possible buyers, when they choose not to include a mic input. By the way, I bet the 120fps is also absent, right? This is really anoying. It is like Samsung is saying "well we can do the same camera (NX1) for half the price.. but since we don't want the NX1 owners to be angry with us, we gonna do some changes in the NX500 cameras. ".. even a cheap laptop has a mic input.
The slow motion 120f/p is not there from what I've read elsewhere. There was speculation that Samsung would lower the price of the NX1. This is exactly how Canon and Nikon have slipped. They colluded together to uphold price points and now Sony, Panasonic and Samsung are invading their territory. Samsung had a chance to blow up the market and take huge market share and instead they have released fraudulent specs for this camera to drive pre-sales. If I had been one of those people I would return the camera for a refund. It's fraud.
MICHAEL.... Great video Great presentation Great language managing & articulation (not..this is a sexy, cool camera bull) You should see the POOR presentation of this camera on Dpreview... Your still shots are sooo crispy. Are they from the 4K video or just fine jpegs? I have my eyes set on this camera. Are you going to go out and play with this baby and share the results, dear Michael? Keep on shooting, Keep on sharing, Have a terrific day!!!!
No worries. Your English is fine. The Canon 700D cannot record 4K/UHD video so for that purpose the NX500 is better. For Full HD recording however they should be pretty similar. The Canon is larger but its flip screen can be fully articulated.
michaeljosh thank you! I think I will go for the canon 700d because there are only a few people who have a 4k monitor and canon has magic lantern firmware to shoot raw video.
LX100 is a compact that shoots 4K I think. Having said that......some people over here are too negatieve to my mind. This cam costs 799 dollar. That is really really cheap for what you get. Both paansonic and Samsung however are forgetting about their enthusiast shooters. We need an NX50 in there, with EVF, no weathersealing, a mor reasonable framebuffer, 4K can be a crop to my mind. And a swivelscreen at 1000 dollar. Same for Panasonic with G7 or G8. But at least Panasonic adds an EVF to their GX-series.
Serenoj69 Samsung deliberately crippled the 4K. This has the NX1 insides but in crippled form. They broke the insides to maintain the NX1 price point. EPIC FAIL.

Excellent review! I am only a beginner , do you think its worth it to buy this camera and is it easy to use or not conplicated?
Thanks for the comment! This is a great starter camera, it is very easy to use, yet complex enough for you to grow into as you learn.
GadgetMatch yey got my new nx500
Great review. Concise, articulate.
I believe you have the first review of this camera.

You're welcome mdavidp125!
Thanks for the review. I would like to know if you can use the camera while it is being charged? This would be great for time lapse recording with it connected to an external battery like a Go Puk.

Thanks for the informative review. I was planning to cancel my order until I saw your review. For the price and features I think it isn't bad at all!
Great review ! But 4K Crop is a deal breaker for me...
+Anthony STAGLIANO
Shoots 1440p uncropped now though.

What's the buffer rate like for raw shots? Would've been nice to see how it handles raw
In high speed drive the NX500 can only take 5 RAW pictures before the buffer fills and slows down. And that's with a UHS-1 SD Card.
Looking to switch my fz1000 for this what you guys think. I'm doing 4k music video recording and family photos
I really want to have this immediately… But it seems very long to wait to be available Indonesia..
Great review! I like what Samsung is doing but this camera needs a electronic viewfinder. Sony figured that out and they sell a lot of A6000s.
Good recommendation and with good presentation, keep it up,posting.
how about Samsung NX3300, can you do a review? thanks
Just got the sony a6000 should i return it and get the nx500 im interested in the 4K im doing photo shoot and music video the sony does 1080p @60p
Great review! Good job!
Unexpected 4k crop makes nx500 nothing. But your review is good.
Nice photos!
Thanks. Team effort.
how do i connect and turn on the flash?
any thoughts about how this stacks against the sonya600? I currently have the samsung nx300 and am looking to upgrade to this or the sonya600

nice one, thanx

Serenoj69 Agreed. That's why the Sony RX100 M3 is pretty impressive, at that size it has a built-in EVF and Flash (the NX500 has neither).
michaeljosh I think the RX1003 is fine, but find GM5 Panasonic the most impressive one. A sensor twice the size, a bit bigger, interchangable lenses and really very very good IQ. better than Canon APS-c for instance. Wow.
No ext mic in?
4k crop vídeo and the absence of a mic input, are the reasons for me not to buy this camera... I guess adding a mic input is really expensive ;)
It's worse than that. The insides of this camera are the NX1. They broke it with the crop and frames per second just to maintain the NX1 price point.
Drumming Tee Samsung is igoring "RUclipsrs", and possible buyers, when they choose not to include a mic input. By the way, I bet the 120fps is also absent, right? This is really anoying. Thanks so much for your comments! Most of the shots are fine JPEGs and the others are 4k grabs.
I only got Samsung Es95
this or panasonic gx8?
+Anc hor
Depends completely what you want.
Is this better for video than the canon 700d/t5i I really wanna shoot good videos and photos sorry for bad English

I wish there was 2.5k mode without crop.
same here 4k crop makes me no buy this camera
You korean?
The 4k crop really ruins it... now i have to wait for a compact Sony or Panasonic to shoot 4k..
Really good and informative review though, thanks!

It's sad that Samsung discontinued their camera line😭 because I just entered the camera world😥
Turn off that music.
