Just been gifted a Freelander 1 with the Td4 engine as a project car with a broken clutch so I've been watching a few of your videos with great interest. These videos are superb!! Many thanks for uploading them.
Hi, You helped me before with a door lock - much appreciated. Now my XEDi L series wont rev past 3000 RPM - it's ok if it rests for a few days, but when it gets hot the problem returns. I can push it past the 3000 by pedal to the metal. then it has a lumpy idle. I have replaced the fuel filter. I'm thinking a contaminated PCV or something that returns to normal after a rest. There is no negative pressure in the tank ie ( no whoosh when cap removed) Hope you can help me - I love this hippo
Thanks. The Freelanders are great aren’t they. Hopefully you can get to the bottom of this issue. Problems getting enough power (or rpm) will be either not enough fuel or not enough air. The first step is to work out which. A turbo boost gauge that measures inlet manifold pressure is useful to check on boost levels (cheap on eBay) and if that engine has any sensor on the fuel pressure (I am not surre about that engine) then try and measure that. Hopefully a few clues to the problem will come out. I doubt a PCV would cause what you see. Probably look around some forums for other people who had this problem as well. Otherwise just check everything, a bit like I had to do fixing a smokey TD4 Freelander that I did a video on.
Could be the crank sensor like in this video, but could also be a lack of turbo boost pressure. Put on a pressure gauge (boost/vacuum guage) and see if you have any boost pressure, then find the leak if you have no pressure.
I think the exhaust was standard on that td4 when I had it. I now have a 1.8 petrol turbo with home made exhaust which is a bit more interesting on power and sound!
Hi, first thankyou for all your videos about freelander "quirks" I've found a number of them very helpful and informative 👍 I'm currently trying to replace the crankshaft position sensor, could you tell me how you remove the silver/grey front valance at the bottom of the bumper... I don't want to risk breaking it. Thank-you Ben
Thanks. There is the undertray which has a built in aluminium section at the front, that is all removed by bolts and screws which are visible. The front valence is part of the bumper, I don’t think you need to remove that do do the sensor.
I took my deisel ford to an auto electrician and was told glow plugs take somewhere between 20 and 30 seconds so I think give the glows a bit more time to heat properly to give it a good start, my glow plugs were only heating for 6 seconds and wouldn’t start the car so I hit the key 6 more times at 6 second intervals 6x6=36 and it started lol. So there ya go. I still have to get it sorted out what the issue is but for now I can still get it Going.

Hi, comeinhandynow! I have a similar problem in my freelander td4 from 2004; at 2000 rpm and a speed of 80/100 km / h, the engine dries up but if I then accelerate the problem disappears and the engine runs like a marvel! can all this be attributable to the sensor I see in your video? (I think it is crankshaft rpm sensor) or can you advise me on the annoying compose? from the diagnosis there is no error and having said that apart from this small defect the car is fine! thanks if you can answer me!

@@cinemechanica75 Hard to tell much from that. You need to monitor air pressure and fuel pressure with an obd2 reader or measure the hp fuel sensor voltage and install a boost gauge to check for problems. Hi bud, Purchased a freelander 1 TD4 commercial this week, On initial start up the engine stalls. Start it again and it doesnt stall but runs really rough for about 10 seconds (like its only running on 3 cylinders) then its completely fine. I suspected glow plugs and replaced them and going to service the car next including fuel filter. Any suggestions please? Thanks.
Good guess on glow plugs, but the next thing to check would be the HP fuel sensor readings to check that the fuel pressure to the injectors is correct. A common fault is a worn HP regulator seal. Also check and clean the injectors.
@@comeinhandynow also while I’m here when I got the car the rear window wouldn’t go down. stripped down the back found an unplugged connector for the wiper motor. I plugged that back in and my rear window started working again, it goes down but doesn’t go back up and now it’s stuck down. The regulator doesn’t click when I press the up button so it’s not getting any feed. Is there any idea what I should check? Relays? Is it something common. Thanks again.

I guess that is the covid19 effect on the supply chain. I have a set of those cheaper Chinese glow plugs if those are of any interest. As new. Not as good as Delphi but better than non working ones.

There is a big difference between cheap Chinese glow plugs and better quality Delphi ones, as I show. I wouldn’t buy the cheap ones again.
It would have been good to have had an IR heat reader on the glow plug test as this would have also shown hot the glowplugs were getting.

Why didn't you change the plug with the same original brand Beru...? Is it Delphi better?
I had read that Delphi were good and better than at least the Chinese ones. Not sure how Beru compare to be honest.

Only a guess but maybe a corroded earth connection. Check out any body or engine earths in the engine compartment.

Forgive my English .. to be more correct at 2000 rpm and constant 80-100kmh, the engine is slightly bumping!
That doesnt sound like the crank sensor causing it, maybe a fuel pressure problem. Read the hp sensor value on an obdii reader, or a voltmeter.

Also try swapping over the wires to the motor, that may enable you to get it back up and also it will confirm if it’s the switch or the motor.

Check the voltage reading from the high pressure fuel sensor and then the low pressure one.
Fuel pressure unit allways goes on these around 140000
