Thank you so much for watching! I absolutely love Vogue and have gotten so many special fabrics from there. Alex @Masson Lifestyle is also Chicago based and shops at Vogue. Check out her channel, if you don't know it! She and I have agreed to meet up for a Vogue shopping trip next time I make it back home (which probably won't be for a while with the state of the economy!) 🤷.
Thank you so much, Gwen! As you know, this dress was a journey. I absolutely love the finished dress though, so I don't regret a minute of the trials and tribulations!!
Hi There's, I think that dress is totally you and it's just so tremendous that you had such a fun party to wear it to. I almost missed your video because I love the fabric so much that I was frantically searching the Internet to source some for myself. Apparently, no store in the USA sells it. so it's not meant to be. I will just admire your lovely 70'svibe dress from across the pond. Kathy
Thank you so much, Kathy! It was such a joyful make. The fabric is seriously gorgeous, so I don't blame you!! Send me a message on Instagram if you ever want to do a fabric swap. I can order some of this and ship it to you, and you can order something from Blackbird Fabrics and ship it to me. 😉
Hi Theresa, I have to say that when I saw that this week’s video was a wrap dress, I wasn’t going to watch it. I have a larger bust and in the way back past, I had tried on ready-made crossover garments and I hated them because they didn’t fit right. So I ruled them out - for life. However I watched your video because I always enjoy you and for that reason alone, I watched. I just had to tell you how glad I watched after all! You are so smart and you are an excellent teacher! Your clear instructions on how to alter the pattern was fabulous. I especially liked how you took in the fullness in the neckline and transferred it to the bust dart. This is a problem area for me and I will try this technique. I think I may try the Cashmerette Roseclair Dress someday as Jenny also has lots of tips for fit for curvy sewists. Please keep making videos! 😁💚
Oh Karen, that is the nicest compliment that I could get! It's really wonderful to hear that you might even try a wrap dress again after so long, as a result! I haven't made the Roseclair, but I have a lot of confidence in Cashmerette, so you may be surprised to not need many (if any) adjustments with that one. Thanks for watching, despite the topic seeming like it wasn't for you. I'm so glad that it worked out!
I skipped over this video bc I was a young adult in the 1970's, I wore those fashions, enjoyed them but have no desire to go back. Having said that your video was referenced by Stephanie Farrell. Theresa, you've done an excellent job. Your tutorial regarding your pattern adjustments is clear, understandable and an excellent reference. One suggestion. When adding paper for fabric adjustments differing color paper makes it much easier to understand. Wonderful job. Thank you.
Oh, I must have missed Stephanie's video where she referenced it! Do you remember which video it was? It's really nice to hear that it was clear and helpful. I love the tip of using different colored paper for clarity. I will definitely do that in the future. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching back!
Perfect, perfect, perfect you explained the series of re draftings so very well. I totally get your reluctance to go back to Guthries again, I would have wiggled around the same as you. This was a wonderful share. I am now eyeing my 7969 with a jaundiced eye, knowing that my combo of narrow shoulders, stega bust and thick waist means a toile or maybe two. But thanks to your trail blazing I know it is doable. After the toile stage for the serious fabric, I am going to over order and use any spare for lining bags and patchwork. Thank you so much.
It is great to hear that sharing my experience was helpful. It's hard to push yourself through the muslin stage, but it's so satisfying when it finally works. Good luck with yours!
Brilliant video, you explained it so well. Not an adjustment I will need but the principle can so easily be applied elsewhere. Thank you . I was also a teenager into 20s in the 70s and ,agree with Barbara, you got it spot on
Thank you, Jane! I love to dress up, so it was fun to really go for it. I'm glad to hear that it was clear. These adjustments can seem so complicated, but once you understand what you're trying to do, it's not so bad!
Lovely vid v interesting. Wonderful dress really suits you, fabulous fabric, perfect choice. Wish there were sewing events near me, would love a friend who sews, my partner does his best to listen to me whitter on about patterns, but his heart is not in it. He recognises all the music of the various sewing vloggers I listen to as I sew, bless.
That's a big part of why I started a RUclips channel, honestly! I've got a friend into sewing because I never knew anyone in my life who sews. I'm grateful to be in London where there are a lot of sewists around, but it's such a big city that it's a good hour/hour and a half to get to any meetups. And my husband recognizes my sewing channels, too! 😆
I love your dress! Super matchup of fabric to pattern. Pretty cool to see real life full bust adjustment on this pattern and how well it turned out. You nailed the vibe with your flower crown addition. You positively glow in the colours you chose for fabric and flowers. 🎉🥂🌼
Aww, thank you so much, Nancy! I was pretty excited about this fabric and pattern pairing, and it was even better than I hoped! It helps when you feel amazing in something. I think it comes across!!
Thank you so much, Mari! I'm finding more opportunities in London to meet fellow sewists. It's exciting to see that people are starting to meet up again. I hope the same happens more near you, too!
I have the pattern and need this adjustment. Didn’t know how to approach this, so haven’t made the dress. Simple in design, but for someone who needs an FBA, daunting. Appreciate you stepping it out for us.
All the hard work getting the fit right was totally worth it; your outfit, including flower crown, looked fantastic! I had no idea about the fabric drama though - how stressful! You got there in the end though
This is so clever, and a bit mind blowing. I have made this dress before and have a full bust so it gapes a bit. I also have this fabric and would love to make this. I will try and get my head around the FBA. Thanks so much for such a great video.
There are quite a few tutorials out there for creating an FBA without a dart (by creating a dart), if you prefer to see it blog-style. I believe that Helen's Closet has one? I've put a link in the description box to the tutorial for pinching out the excess fabric for the gaping neckline. That assumes there is a dart, though. I really love this fabric for the dress. I've now adjusted it to be more like a straight 'view a', and I'll be sharing a video about that soon. I hope yours works out, if you go for it!
Hi Theresa! What a story! I loved hearing all about the making of your wonderful dress. Im so happy you were able to get your fabric! I especially appreciated the FBA process. I need that for everything I make but I've been avoiding it and what I can't avoiding, I won't make but I'm ready to master it! Thank you so much for sharing!🥰🤩
These adjustments definitely get easier the more you do them. I just assume that I need an FBA for a pattern, so it's not as disappointing to do one. And then there are the sewing pattern designers who make things with multiple bust cup sizes (Cashmerette, Pattern Scout, Jennifer Lauren Handmade), who do the hard work for you! Thanks for watching, Talisha!
Well done, such a great journey! Your dress is so beautiful. I'm not sure I'd ever be brave enough for a big sewy party but it looks like you all had a fab time !
Thank you, Debs! I feel a lot less nervous for next time, that's for sure. If you're ever considering going to one in London, let me know, and I'll promise to keep you company! 😉
Love your dress style much. ❤ Thank for sharing this FBA, just what I needed for my next version of the M7969. I liked by first attempt but want to size down and do the fba for my next one.
Thank you so much for doing this! It has helped me immensely in knowing I'm doing fine on full bust adjustments. I get scared cuz it looks so Frankenpattern! But your pattern looks like mine! Thanks for the boost of confidence! I love your dress. It is beautiful 😍
The pattern piece looks like such a mess, doesn't it?? 😂 It's definitely not just you. That's the nature of the beast. Good luck with your future makes. Having to adjust for a fuller bust is such a pain, but it really does get easier with practice!
I wish I could have had watched this before I made my version. I needed to make similar adjustments. I actually added a inch onto each diagonal , added a bit to the sleeve tapered around the armscye. I thought I had it right in the muslin but it’s not going to cross over enough. I had no idea that using the same principles would work for a FBA because of the raglan sleeves and angles. My version is sitting unfinished and I am hoping that eventually I will be able to fix it or buy something to wear under it or shrink to fit it. I am going to save this so I can rewatch the adjustment. I think it looks fabulous on you !
Thank you, Cathy! I'm sorry that you didn't have much luck with yours. Sometimes we get such a different result with the fashion fabric. I hate when that happens! I'll be sharing my 'everyday' version of this dress soon, including a change I made to help the crossover to sit even higher for modesty. I got the tip from Sandeep, owner of the fabric shop Sister Mintaka, here in the UK: instagram.com/s/aGlnaGxpZ2h0OjE3OTUwOTkwOTE4NjgwMjcy?story_media_id=2511321794630115846_488003206&igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY=
I have this free pattern but will have the same fit issues as you so the talk through the fba was really useful. Thanks a lot. Your dress looks lovely. I’m going to steer away from the summer of love look, however, as I was there the first time!
I completely understand not wanting to go back! 😆 I'm the same with the 90's fashion that is back in fashion. I'm happy to hear that my video was helpful! It's definitely one to muslin for, but when it's right, it's so good! I'd love to hear how yours turns out, if you make one!
Hi Theresa, another great video! Thank you for the wonderful tutorial on the full bust adjustment. I don’t need to make that adjustment for myself but have wondered how it’s done and You explain everything so well. Sorry to hear of the cutting error… 🙀 but so glad you were able to get more fabric and finish in time for the party. Congrats! Thanks again.
Thank you so much for watching, even though it wasn't necessarily an adjustment you'd need to make! I was pretty stressed and annoyed with myself about the cutting error (I was sure that I double checked that I'd flipped the piece, as I was cutting out on the flat-apparently I was wrong!). All's well that ends well, though! ❤️
Thank you, Julie!! It really felt pretty magical to wear. I knew it would be a fitting journey going in, and I wasn't wrong. This one was worth every minute, though!
That was so interesting! Love your 70s dress! I would have definitely made and worn it, back then, except for the big sleeves (that was never my thing). I look forward to seeing how you make it more day-to-day wearable. 😊
Thank you so much! It was incredibly fun to wear. I've made some adjustments to the dress now, and as much as I love the 70s vibe of this, the altered version feels much more like me. I'll be sharing it soon!
It's so ridiculous because if I worked in a fabric shop, I'd find the whole thing really funny and totally sympathize. They'd just gone to so much trouble for me, it was too embarrassing!! 😂 Worked out in the end, though. 🤷😉
Your dress is gorgeous and that flower crown was just such a perfect detail! Thank you so much for the detailed video - I need an FBA almost all the time and I’m scared of making Big 4 patterns for that very reason. You’ve certainly simplified the whole process for me. 🇨🇦😀
That's so nice to hear, thank you so much! I hope that you feel able to tackle these things in the future. Each pattern brings its own unique challenges, but the more you try the more you learn!
Thank you for taking the time to make this vid; absolutely brilliant. Thank you showing FBA and how to raise the front. Out of curiosity, did you press the dart excess up? I've subscribed because I want to see more....
That's great to hear, thank you! Yes, you can press side darts up or down, and I've heard that pressing them up works better for a fuller bust. It certainly seems to sit well on me, so I often do that if I'm adding a dart or increasing a dart. When a dart is drafted, the part of the dart that sticks out will only press flat in one direction (usually down), but Cashmerette (who draft specifically for a full bust) design theirs to be pressed up. I copied them!
Thank you for this .soò...I have to do bust adjustments on everything..I found how you took excess from.the front neckline useful..I did noticed however how distorted the arm hole became...I always 'true' this to make the armholes look like how it was before I started changing the pattern...are you saying this is not necessary..I do this as I think this was how the pattern wanted the arm hole to.look..bit if it is not necessary I will.not do this anymore
That's an interesting question! This dress has a raglan sleeve, so it's a little bit different. For that adjustment, I was following a tutorial from By Hand London, based on their Hannah Dress, which has a set in sleeve. They don't mention changing the armhole, so I suspect that you don't need to. It will probably fall as it should on your body, once you've removed that excess fabric along the neckline. I'm definitely not an expert, but I'd try without the extra armhole adjustment with a muslin and see what happens!
Thanks Theresa.. basically I always copy the armhole before I do a bust adjustment then I lay the original armhole over the new pattern piece and copy it ...I have had some fantastic results...as a good fit for me is everything ...thats why i make my own clothes....so i must be doing something right ...I do know that on some u tubes they say leave the arm hole but that just seems strange...I think with dressmaking we have to go with what makes sense ... and what works ...thank for your fba tutorial ..as it just confirmed that I am doing it correctly...and may I say...you have s beautiful nature that comes across so well in your videos..❤️.
@@DD-hf7vh you're so kind, thank you! I imagine that there are probably lots of ways to achieve the same outcome. I would definitely say that if your method is working for you, absolutely go with that!!

I've just subscribed to your channel after watching your vlog I have this pattern but have been to scared to make this dress, but after watching this vlog I will have a go at making it as you was so helpful in the adjustment of the upper part of the garment. ✂️🪡🧵💕😊
That is so nice to hear! I wish you luck. I recommend trying some muslins of the bodice and hope it works out for you!
