  • Professor William Gould IV talks with researchers Dr. Paul Ortiz and Donovan Carter in this Zoom recorded follow-up interview for the Underground Railroad Oral History Project. Professor Gould is the descendant of William B. Gould, formerly slaved and later served as a sailor (1862-1865) aboard the Cambridge, a Union gunboat of the Civil War. William Gould wrote a detailed diary while on board the Cambridge that is now the subject of Professor Gould IV's new book, "Diary of a Contraband. The Civil War Passage of a Black Sailor."
    The Underground Railroad Oral History Project is a project in collaboration with the National Park Service and the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida.
