  • The charismatic New Zealand soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa looks back at her life in song through forty years of classic performances from the BBC archives, from her first TV performance on The Harry Secombe Show in 1971 to her appearances on Top of the Pops to sing the rugby anthem World in Union in 1991, plus performances from the Last Night of the Proms and Terry Wogan's chat show.
Dame Kiri's dramatic and operatic skills are captured in the Royal Opera's production of Puccini's Manon, she describes working with Leonard Bernstein, Georg Solti and on Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio, and she recalls the royal wedding in 1981 at which she sang Handel's Let the bright Seraphim to a global TV audience of 700 million.
There's documentary footage of the house where Kiri grew up in New Zealand (now a car park), she vividly evokes the East End of London where she studied as a student when she first came to London, and we see her goofing around on the golf course with Placido Domingo.
As Dame Kiri says in her candid new interview for this programme in which she reflects on her BBC appearances, "If I look back what you have is snippets of my life, I suppose.".

Amazing! She´s the perfect example than a real music lover can shine besides the genre that she/he sings...Magical voice!

Lovely profile. I saw Kiri onstage in New York several times - the Countess, Fiordiligi, the Marschallin. Also Violetta, which wasn’t convincingly acted, but it was the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard from a human voice.

Kiri’s beautiful voice filling that cavernous space at St. Paul’s Cathedral gives me chills to this day.

‘There’s a place for us’ brought a powerful emotional response from me quite unexpectedly. Bernstein Kiri and Placido ...what an overwhelming combination. The glimpse of the Bernstein rehearsal and the quiet courage it must have taken for Kiri to challenge his non stop smoking
Thank you BBC; I will be watching my fellow Kiwi (NewZealander) in this marvellous programme many many times...so much richness ...

There's only one danger: Kiri Te Kanawa's voice could be too beautiful we forget dramatic of content she sings about.

So wonderful to know more about Dame Kiri, one of my two most favorite sopranos ever. Every single time I see her sing with Placido, I imagine the beautiful babies they could have made together. ***slaps own face*** Did I say that out loud? Sigh.... My favorite Desdemona to his Otello. My favorite Manon to his De Grieux. Earth shatteringly moving. Thank you for sharing this with us. Brava!

So we couldn`t hear her singing Pokarekare Ana in a rare 1975 recording, because the interviewer/director just had to start interviewing. How is possible not to understand the meaning of her singing? How is it possible not to shut up?
