How can anyone not be lifted off the ground by this melding and surging of voices...the rapture of Strauss's glorious and inspiring music gilded, ennobled and ethereally consummated by these very gifted singers.
My favorite moment in opera. Strauss's great trio is impossibly beautiful. The music, the voices, the meaningful subtext--it's profoundly moving. Beautiful performance. And no belting--apparently a requirement of today's vocal music.
I can't believe this my 2 favorite opera singers of all time singing together! Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Kathleen battle, I thought it was to good to be true! how legendary!
Kiri looks like the Goddess that she is. All sound wonderful in this - one of the most moving scenes in operatic history. I could listen to this all day.
Dame Kiri and Miss Battle certainly possessed beautiful instruments. Brava! Kathleen was one of the best Sophies ever . Saw her twice and she took it to heaven
Damekirilover - thanks so much for posting! It's so good to hear such a wonderful rendition (despite Levine's surprisingly slow tempi) and always great to hear such fantastic voices in their prime. It's a superb addition to the Te Kanawa/Battle Arabella duet (sadly only audio) already posted on here.
I have been an opera lover since my youth and it is difficult to unequivocally say that one is my absolute favorite. Maestro Richard Karp, for 40 years the master of the Pittsburgh Opera was once asked that question. His reply, "possibly Der Rosenkavalier". I will say this..nothing in operatic literature stirs me like the final trio from this opera. The writing is insanely beautiful - the tension and release from 5:00 to 5:38 never fails to bring tears. So, don't quibble - just listen
I love Rosenkavalier despite its longeurs, but whenever I return from a trip the very first thing I put on is the Trio with Kiri. It is my Welcome Home, and I agree that nothing in operatic literature stirs me like this. From that amazing Hab Mir’s gelobt to the sublime climax, there is hardly anything like it in all opera. I only wish there were more other-worldly moments of genius in Strauss's output. When he was on, he was definitely on -- and quite often, But there is also a lot of Grade B filler music in his works.
the opening phrases by Kiri are some of the best she probably ever sang! what a glorious video to have she and Kathleen singing this together. I enjoyed Katherine, but she does is out of balance.....not oversinging, just not blending. Thanks for this beautiful gem! Wow....I heard Kiri all over and followed her to Washington to the very end of her career to hear her sing "Vanessa." :-)
I have never heard that final trade off of the final high note so perfectly song. That is what the ecstasy of a high note with three beautiful voices can do to one person.
And so is the incomparable Beverly Sills such a gracious host of the show! So, we have 4 stunning greats in one video clip!!! Well done and this was just too lovely!!!!!
I think it is probably the only one video we can get currently of Dame Kiri and Ms. Battle sharing the same stage..........Katherine Ciesinski is here also very wonderful!
After reading through that sea of competitive nitpicking, I just want to thank you for posting this lovely excerpt of these three, very well-matched and gifted singers in this glorious trio. Much appreciated.
@jaybirdfleming - aha yes jaybirdfleming! so glad you singled out those opening phrases, I too had thought something extraordinary was happening then! Thanks for your posting. I attended 2 fine Kiri te Kanawa Countesses in Le Nozze di Figaro in San Francisco in 1986, and though I have not been a massive fan over the years, this beautiful video has made me a late convert.
Beautiful rendition. Kiri is so lovely and regal, perfect for this role. My other favorite Marschallins are Renee Fleming and Gwyneth Jones. When did Beverly Sills look so slim and glamorous?!
How fortunate we all are, to live on the same planet, at the same time, in the same universe as they. How sad it is that time passes so quickly, like a thief in the night.
Dame Kiri Lover At least we know we have loved, and felt passion, not hidden in caves to wonder about paradise. We have walked in the glade, witnessed sunsets on the wing, bathed in limpid pools, healed grievous wounds, delivered from our nightmares, and awakened form our slumber by the roaring winds, and gentle wave, to wander as a butterfly in the gardens of the moon. Pete Mullen: Have a glorious day Dame Kiri Lover, my opera kin.
I agree the blending of voices here is the best on youtube its like cream and velvet together, also notice at "6:38" mark the nod Kiri gives Battle as she see's how moved battle is by the trio singing, I think they might have still had a little beef, but talent recognizes talent, and both had to admit that the other is one singing mother f*cker! LOL
I disagree: actually, I think Kathleen sounds much fresher here than in the later version with Fleming and Flika. Her voice comes out more naturally here. It's interesting how we hear differently.
Funny comment! thanks! sounds like Ms Battle was just that - nomen est omen! Like her colleagues wearing t-shirst saying 'I survived the Battle' But nevertheless - WHAT A VOICE! Spendid! Heaven to hear that trio sung so well...
There is a well known incident where she bashed on the piano during a recital in Australia because the accompanist wasn't playing to her exact preference. Word got around very quickly (I'm in NZ)
Not sure that they are trying to compete against each other but Kiri and Kathleen Battle have never been friends since the 1983 Arabella. But still beauty dominates ALL!!!
How can anyone not be lifted off the ground by this melding and surging of voices...the rapture of Strauss's glorious and inspiring music gilded, ennobled and ethereally consummated by these very gifted singers.
It's exquisite.
My favorite moment in opera. Strauss's great trio is impossibly beautiful. The music, the voices, the meaningful subtext--it's profoundly moving. Beautiful performance. And no belting--apparently a requirement of today's vocal music.
There always have been, and are, some stupendous singers out there. But there has only ever been one Kiri..........
I can't believe this my 2 favorite opera singers of all time singing together! Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Kathleen battle, I thought it was to good to be true! how legendary!
What a glorious performance. Kiri - so effortless, understated and yet so moving.
Another gorgeous rendition of one the most beautiful songs in opera from3 wonderful singers.
25 years, and I still remember watching this performance perfectly clearly. Thanks for posting it!
Kiri looks like the Goddess that she is. All sound wonderful in this - one of the most moving scenes in operatic history. I could listen to this all day.
🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹Absolutely gorgeous!
No caterwalling! Beautifully restrained
Singing.🎹🎹🎹🎹
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
Kudos to the mezzo Katherine Ciesinski. Just sublime...
Dame Kiri and Miss Battle certainly possessed beautiful instruments. Brava! Kathleen was one of the best Sophies ever . Saw her twice and she took it to heaven
And they hate each other! Lol!
everybody hates KB... but her voice is unbelievable!
Micah and Modesta ASMR lol they sure did. I have the infamous opera recording Arabella of Battle and Te Kanawa.. talk about icy scenes of singing!
And yet that is a beautiful recording! Maybe that kind of dynamic makes for great performance art....
+Micah and Modesta ASMR
Therefore one tries to outdo the other. Not the worst manner to get peak performance ..
I love the way Kiri Te Kanawa sings.. I don't care what era they are dressed in.
This is a concert performance and they look lovely.
Damekirilover - thanks so much for posting! It's so good to hear such a wonderful rendition (despite Levine's surprisingly slow tempi) and always great to hear such fantastic voices in their prime. Kiri Te Kanawa is perfection as always!!!

One of operas greatest moment, wonderfully performed.

EVER SUNG IS A FACT!!!
Such effortless delivery by Kiri. Truly amazing.
"i think "not blending" is an understatement - spoiling by utterly unbearable, uncalled for, and uncontrollable screeching would be more like it
I have never heard that final trade off of the final high note so perfectly song. That is what the ecstasy of a high note with three beautiful voices can do to one person.

Five, even if Levine messed up.
Absolutely sublime! What a beautiful performance from three beautiful ladies with beautiful voices! Bravissimi!
Menudo trio !! Que maravilla !! Bien Levine.
Kiri is my favorite person
You're absolutely right, I've been listening to it for the last two hours over and over again. I just don't get enought of it!
So much amazing performens! What the unbelievable voices! Thanks a lot for posting!
Wonderful! And outstanding! Viele Grüße Bernd.
Katherine is just great also!! she really punches the big moment creating such an emotional climax.
She is really over looked... I lover when she does deep vocal stuff
Simply the best version of this trio I’ve ever heard. Spectacular.
Hermoso el respeto que Kiri Te Kanawa demuestra a Sills. Eso se llama grandeza.
wonderful!!! mrs battle looks like an angel and sounds as it!!! great dames!!!!
La Battle's frock is as divine as her singing! So timeless and elegant.
Kiri was born to sing Strauss.. great ensemble!
lovely ,what a performance !
Kathleen is so young and still purely talented and matured voice !
Kathleen is so beautiful, omw! Beautiful singing from all three! Bravi tutti!
Heavenly beautiful
You can listen to this over and over
Kathleen battle has incredible voice passion
Heavenly beautiful

Amazing! ❤🧡❤
KIRI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The poise, control, beauty and clinical precision. Her and KATHLEEEEEEEN!!! Whew, my wig's gone!
Stunning. Thank you for posting.
You are right, Battle's dress is stunning!
What a treat to listen to these 3 Great Sopranos.....
Kiri's hair!!!! It's so 80s. I love her though, she is such an amazing person.
Gracias por este video. Hermoso
Goddess of my youth, Kiri, divine Kiri.
I read that and thought..."Frank would say that."
xo.
...of course, that was before I saw your name dear Frank.
Thank you for sharing, this is amazing!...
I can hear Mr. Levine listening to this exquisite piece.
I doubt they have recordings where he is.
Wow that was AMAZING! Bravi tutti!
Heavenly sound!
Very nice. All are great. Period.
Three wonderful voices! Bravissimo!!! :-)
Oh Mann, die Frisuren von
Marschallin und Oktavian😮
Levine's movements look wonderfully elegant
@jaybirdfleming - aha yes jaybirdfleming! so glad you singled out those opening phrases, I too had thought something extraordinary was happening then! Thanks for your posting. In vocal music it is called terzetto. In instrumental trio
Thank you!!!!!
Fantástico. Obrigada por mais este vídeo, de todo desconhecido para mim.
Beautiful rendition. Kiri is so lovely and regal, perfect for this role. My other favorite Marschallins are Renee Fleming and Gwyneth Jones. When did Beverly Sills look so slim and glamorous?!

Peter Mullen
Dear Peter, your sentimental words almost bring me to tears...what a precious moment these great artists gave us! CHEERS!
Dame Kiri Lover At least we know we have loved, and felt passion, not hidden in caves to wonder about paradise. Pete Mullen:
Have a glorious day Dame Kiri Lover, my opera kin.
Beverly lost a lot of weight during the mid to late 80s...
Renée Fleming as marschallins?? Sorry her voice is cold without émotion. After Te Kanawa Elisabeth Soderstrom was great. Sorry . Best regards anyway
Kathleen was spinning diamonds in mid air
I love how Kiri's final high B overpowers everything else;-)!
Did anybody else notice how leading up to the 5:20 moment, Kiri really backs off and gets ready for our soaring moments?
Wonderful.
so beautiful...
The only thing missing here is Frederica Von Stade's Octavian.
LOL
I agree luv them in arabella
Am i in heaven already?
beautiful
I hope these ladies kept strong.
Angelic voice of Kathleen!!!!
Kiri ❤️
Stupendus!!!!
Is it just me or does Kiri look a little bit like Bea Arthur in her "Maude" days in this? They all sound beautiful btw!
What an experience!
Un final maravilloso
Uno de las pìezas más bella de la ópera
Magnificent!
Dame Kiri....WOW.
Sublime !
Изумительно!
It feels like the first time I saw this clip! Amazing! Kathlees looks and sounds celestial. Kiri sounds celestial (lol). Brave!
sublime
Kiri reigns supreme as ihre furstliche gnaden, but oh how kathleen soars!
Magnificent
god what a knock out body battle had.
the sound is gorgeous in this..all three.
Ahhhh…Dame Kiri.
It must feel different to have a orchestra behind you.
damn that's VERY bavarian !!!, I can hear those alpine foothills!!!
I disagree: actually, I think Kathleen sounds much fresher here than in the later version with Fleming and Flika. Her voice comes out more naturally here. It's interesting how we hear differently.
What are you all talking about? The only one that seemed to push a bit to drown out the others was Katherine. All were great!
1:06 Start.
Beautiful singing, harmonies, but why did Strauss always leave out the tune?
😍😍😍😍😍
Glorious singing. Pity about the lousy audio.
what is the mezzo wearing? loooove kathy's dress. :)
I think Ciesinski was put in the middle to stop the other two from scratching each other's eyes out.
Funny comment! thanks!

Hah! Certainly the battle of the divas! Who won? Tie I think. :)
a show of prodigy !!
Did the Octavian forget her 'Marie Therese'???
@RRydnew yeah...its just you...
nice 🎉 soaring..voltige
Not sure that they are trying to compete against each other but Kiri and Kathleen Battle have never been friends since the 1983 Arabella. But still beauty dominates ALL!!!
domi2020 Surprising if anyone could stay friends with Kathleen Battleaxe…a glorious voice with the soul of a psycho
