Hey Stream Scheme, maybe this is a bit "late", six months after the video was released, but I wondered about one thing, kinda important, and it surprised me that you didn't mention this in your video. Given that we ONLY play DMCA free music from either of the ones you mentioned (Epidemic Sound, Game Chop, Chillhop, NCS), with credit given, can we play the music on live feed AND on the VOD, or do we STILL have to split the channels? I know a lot of Twitch streamers with thousands of viewers that play popular music while streamings. I feel like they should really know that it's safe, why else would they risk to get their account terminated with hundreds of thousands of followers?
@@patrikmedia Agreed. I do, too. I could name 2 or 3 BIG streamers off the top of my head who play 'popular music' (ie copyrighted) all the time but don't keep videos or don't include them on the VODs if they do. So having watched this, I'm more confused than ever. Oh well.

Epidemic said yes, and also let me keep all the free options in the video.
The very opening line of this video: exactly. Why do Spotify and Twitch both have, in their TOS.... words in effect, blocking people from using any music... even something like StreamBeats? I've only gotten muted once so far, and you know what caused it? Playing Disney Dream Light Valley 🤦♀️ I guess Micky wasn't too happy, haha. But this is very helpful! You break everything down so well! I was very confused when I first read the TOS, then went into Twitch extension and saw some Spotify ones. The one I see a lot is a Spotify widget that shows what song you're playing. I wish Twitch would remove the extension because it's very misleading.
My music channel got suspended for playing copyright FREE music , also had permission from some authors , still got permanent suspended . I didn't get any strike, no vods , I stopped streaming 10 months ago, then I got suspended 10 monts later lol
I was surprised Pretzel Rocks wasn't on your list. o: I don't stream often, but I actually really liked that their bot would send messages in chat with credits for each song (on the free plan). It was less for me to worry about and the artists were being credited, which I try to prioritize since I appreciate the music. ^^
@@brunomoreira622 I still get muted. Twitch uses a third party company to scan the VODs for music, and they don't follow any guidelines Twitch has with any agreed partner music programs like Pretzel Rock. A simple appeal unmutes the section in question. Never had a problem with any copyright strikes.
This is what worries me still. I have this Spotify and idk if I can use it when streaming. So, I need clear instructions on that. I want to respect every piece of music, I do. But this scares me and most of my streams are all muted and I don't like a silent video streams.
I do not understand why it can't be as easy as setting up an extension to cite the title and artist on the stream (which twitch already has) and set it so that viewers can't record the music. we can all listen to music on services and radio, why can't we do it while we are on stream while playing our games.
Because you’re earning money from it and using it without permission. Otherwise anyone could take and use anything they want, even your content, I could just re-upload all of it, we need copyright.
I'd like to use my own music but I'm worried about getting hit. RUclips hit me 3 times for it and I had to explain to them each time that it's my music. I think I'll probably end writing some specific music for streaming vs using my released music. Better to be safe that sorry.
I have one question. I hear big streamers like TheBausffs play famous music in the background when he is live (probably a spotify playlist). This music is obviously copyrighted, but why doesn't he get problems? Is it because the music is not loud enough for systems to pick it up? like, how?
I streamed with gamechop and chillhop before, and for Twitch those work great. But in uploading my vods to youtube, I've gotten several DMCA notices for those services, because according to YT their music resembles other music too much. Upon listening to what YT flagged and what they compared it with, I must say I agree. Not saying you shouldn't use or anything, just saying you should still be vigilant
I was muted for SINGING a song. The only music I had playing was a mix from the RUclips audio library that was no attribution needed. Literally just SINGING will get your VOD muted.
sound track by twitch (beta) is one of the things that has many doing the live music not in vod idea. actually one of their selling points. if you get live muted by harris heller or instrasomething it does split the track and you still get the mute. And basically eljayem says its using music it shouldn't but telling you its ok to do so.
Thanks for this vid. I was under the impression that not having music saved to my VoDs was enough. Definitely gonna check out the services for my stream music.
Thank you so much for this video 🥰 I was actually going to use some of the videos that said "Copyright free" on it for some copyright free gaming music until I saw this video and clicked on it. I REALLY wanted some gaming music that i was familiar with but I didn't want a copyright strike 🤣 So THANK you again, SO much!
This was a total life saver, good to know to keep spotify isolated and off stream from here on out. Shout out to all the big corps shitting on the little guys.
Just realized I can save money when I go fishing because instead of buying new hooks, I just bring your videos with me and I’ll be supplied for life Kappa. Seriously tho, great vid, always great to refresh myself on DMCA stuff and royalty free music for streams/ RUclips.
I've been a bit worried about my music use. Glad there's a vid about it. I use spotify. I have a playlist of "loyalty free" music I've picked out of my fav genre, with artists like NCS and and Hyper Potions. The whole rights stuff confuses me because you usually have to go straight to a label to get that permission and some labels are hard to contact. Like BEC Recordings and Tooth and Nail records. My brother didn't even know how I could contact BEC regarding his bands first album.
Thank you for the info. Just as a bit of constructive feedback, saying "I'll tell you later in the video" or "I'll show you in a bit" is usually a sure way to make people skip ahead or lose interest. People's attention span's are shorter and shorter and most want instant gratification. This having been said, again, thanks for the info and for the work that you put into making this video!
Hey, it's actually the opposite. It's called "Looping" and it increases retention rate because you're promising they'll learn more later. The same reason we add hooks or highlights at the start to get people hooked into the video. Peoples attention span is short, so they need to know its worth their time.
@@StreamScheme eh, hes right though. I did exactly what he said because I hate when people bait me with what I came to the video for. You have chapters anyways so I assume you figured people would skip around though
@@StreamScheme yes but you can’t tell me it doesn’t grind your gears that a small segment of audio that you may have accidentally included in your stream has the potential to ruin hours of work or worse terminate your account.
It really doesn’t bother me, I’ve been doing this for more than 3 years and never had a strike or actual claim because I just use what I’m allowed, even with react content and all types of music.
I dont get, for example KuruHS a favorite streamer of mine is listening to spotify all the time. its on his streams and youtube and people can even vote for songs and stuff! How do i do that do i have to pay thousands to creators just to use their music or is he using it so the systems dont pick it up? its just annoying i dont find a answer anywhere
Been following :) love that you covered this the DAY I was talking about this is chats. I use epidemic sound. Pay a sub fee. Supports the artists. No copy right worries... Cause I PAID lol
I got flagged and I was just playing the regular game and talking even when I mute the music I still got flagged. Don’t know if anyone has this issue but…it’s irritating
I've gotten to a point where unless I'm playing a game with another person my desktop audio is muted because I play games like fortnite where the experience is super weird if I turn off copyrighted audio. I also got sick of copyright free music so this is how I deal with it I would rather the viewers not have audio other than my mic over me getting in trouble for enjoying my time on stream
What if I have a friend that makes my music he asks for nothing but I always give me money because it is his music and his time that he uses to make custom music for me. I own 100% of the songs.
@@theLvizzle Spotify! I usually search up Pokémon lofi, Mario lofi, anime lofi etc. there’s tons of playlists out there! C: RUclips is also another great source.
Ok i noticed even if i play Free / copyright free music or NCM / No copyright music it still put my past video unpublished. It's to the point they don't care if its copyright free they want no music to be played om anyone's stream.
Ik this comment is already one year old, but I'm asking the same question, because I want to start streaming on yt and I'm going through Google and even on yt to find out how streamers/yt can use the music even from games without copyright. I really need to know
By the way, game developers have noticed this trick about music copyrights and have increasingly started adding copyrighted music to their games in unexpected places so that playthrough players don't stream them, for example Pokemon did that in Scarlet and Violet by playing Ed Sheeran's new song Celestial in-game and at the end of it causing notices and takedowns for game streamers. But I don't know why game associations don't want their games to be streamed so desperately that they make such a nuisance.
This isn’t true :) Pokémon has always been intense about these sorts of things, Nintendo and gamefreak are just like that, but here is the thing ALL of their other music is totally fine, it’s just one song in the credits. I uploaded and streamed my entire scarlet playthrough and had zero issues. Other developers aren’t trying to trap or trick you either, that’s why they also often add streamer safe modes to turn it off. Sometimes games call for copyright music because it suits the world like GTA, this also isn’t a trick or trap, it’s just the game.
Another one I'd recommend is ElectroDanceMixes - not all of the mixes they do are copyright free, but they do 1 hour Copyright Free EDM mixes every couple of months. I just pop them into a playlist and I'm set
When he says the live detection is on they mean it 🤣, was doing a test stream to check on quality with music on but sources separated so it didn't go in the vod... nope it got muted even though I know you couldn't hear the music in the vod. Got Epidemic Sounds just to be safe, there really are a ton of awesome tracks on it that perfect for gaming
Isn’t the issue for VOD’s? If you separate Spotify/iTunes to a separate audio capture and have your VOD track setting not posing the Spotify audio capture device you’d have no issue cause it’s VODS specifically not live
So this isn’t quite true, it IS copyrighted, it’s just that a lot of the labels don’t have the resources to strike you, but actually there are lots of examples of channels getting too big and actually being hit with strikes.
@@StreamScheme no IT"s true. I don't know where you been. Gaming music and the copyright thing as not been an issue on twitch. No matter how big or small a channel is. Trust when I said what I said with the experience and, the knowledge I have first hand. But you do you sis.
I DJ Live on twitch and don't ever publish my VODS. Twitch does mute parts of my videos but it works for me. I haven't gotten a strike yet and been doing it for over a yr.
Instead of using NCS, watch out for ACTUAL SMALLER music creators - NCS is great, and is a great starting point but there's so many SMALL music producers that will GLADLY let you play their music on their channel.
I *just* started streaming as a musician who plays and sings covers...3 months ago when I was considering streaming at all, I asked a Partner Streamer if this was a fruitless idea because I'd just get banned immediately and he assured me over and over that covers are okay and I of course noticed that every musician streamer I watched does non-original music at least some of the time. Is there any leeway for musical covers or are we SOL too? Like I should quit streaming and only try to produce music FOR other streamers to use?
There was a royalty free music group on like Newgrounds and I submitted something to it and found it being used in a Halo 3 machinima. Shit was awesome even had me in the credits. Make music that you want someone to hear... someone will hear it!
Wasn't someone working on making a plugin that would open the same music you were listening to in its proper source website and the viewer would have it synced via the plugin but it would count as a unique view. allowing you to listen to music, not have it in your stream, yet allow your viewers to listen along with you at the same time? Or am i just crazy?
I love all of your videos and you have helped me out so much in my streaming journey, still gotta lot to learn but thanks for always making these videos and guiding me ahead, much love ❤
Chillpop says that we need to download the songs in advance and credit them by copying links to each song. Is there a way to more easily give credit for livestreams using their music, without pasting 50+ links individually?
Depends on the game, ALWAYS check if they have a stream safe option. Many games use copyrighted music and you can get a strike for it playing even though it's in game because you are technically profiting off their art by playing it in your stream.
Chillhop was pretty easy for me to set up on Twitch cause you can just link your account from their site but tbh I'm stuck on how to actually set up gamechops or ncs on twitch. Do i do this through obs? Do you have a video on this?
Ironically, some of the music that I got from NCS was copyrighted. In fact, the very first song that shows up when he sorts by Most Popular, Cartoon's On & On, is the track that gets muted.
Are you able to use Nintey9Lives music on your streams? RUclipsr Ssundee and his friends run that and everything there you just need to post the info from their description.
My biggest problem with streams is I want metal and hard rock There is barely any metal and rock that's copyright free I also need a 100% FREE place to get guaranteed copyright free music I already pay for music streaming services, i dont want to pay for multiple
Yes ofc it was stupid but my stream got cut for copyright mid stream rather mid House of The Dragon episode. Viewers said a copyright notice popped up and I wasn't able to stream for 2 days(I think).
Another great video, Thank you. Can I make a suggestion...I use 'soundtrack by Twitch', It's completely free but you do need to make sure it's not saved to your vod and should only be used on Twitch.
I’m not a fan of sound track by twitch because the music I use in stream is such a integral part of the content, so if it is taken of the VoD it makes a worse experience.
So question, wanting to support local artists I know. So I'm thinking in the beginning of my stream where I talk about what's new and on our agenda for the day, I also promote local artists with their permission of course should I need to worry about anything as long as I have their permission in writing? Nvm about another min or so in you cover this
Broooo need your help!!! Whenever im beit to loud my audio from MIC is like down i mean there is No audio in - 5db how can I turn it off? I dont like it sooo and i dont use any filters
But Eljay, I frequently stream Batman Arkham Knight and Mass Effect 2, and always get certain parts of those games muted, most notable the portion after Ivy dies and during the Horizon attack cutscene. It's happened on other games as well, even some where I am unable to turn off the music. So if I should be worried a bit that I get muted as I run a risk of repeating offense. The argument that we don't even have licenses to stream the games in the first place does have a bit of weight and should be discussed between Twitch and record companies. It may and is a problem of copyright holders but Twitch is not entirely innocent and unable to work things out. If they're relying on music detection which has gray areas then they need to make sure there are no gray areas before they try to rely on it. They still push Twitch Soundtrack which is polluted with copyrighted music. I used Epidemic Sound and got a VOD muted once, as have I had the same happen with PretzelRocks and StreamBeats. Yes we should be safe and responsible but its not entirely in our power, and we can't be the only ones making changes, especially when the changes we make still allow the same problems to arise.
Copyright law is outdated. It doesn't exist to preserve someone's creative works, if that were the case, again, why are we allowed to stream games in the first place? We don't own our phones, PCs, digital movies or games, we rely on licenses and connection to servers. The only damage being done is the loss of potential money, it's corporate greed. I really think Twitch has the power to reform that law with negotiation, which would be a great PR win and a great legacy, to leave that impact on this world, but the problem is I don't think they believe they have that power. I think they're scared, so they bend the knee and keep the problem going instead of actually doing things to benefit the streamers. Of course, Twitch is also a corporation trying desperately to make a profit for the last 8 years or so, so I don't expect them to really start an actual attempt to fix copyright issues, so the whole argument becomes irrelevant. There is no such thing as a safe stream or safe music because safety is an illusion. The moment you choose to go live, you run at least one form of risk. You can do what you can to minimize the risks but safety is never 100% guaranteed, whether you stream a game or use "safe" music.
I also don't think 1 second should count as one listen. I think the problem is the live service nature. Cable companies remove channels they don't have licenses to anymore, games remove songs when the licenses expire, streaming services remove movies when they no longer have the licenses for them... but I can pop in the DVD of Aladdin and show it to 4 friends, and the companies can, if they wanted to, look at Arabian Nights as 5 shares. But they can't go back and take the song out. I bought Arkham Knight, but I didn't buy the soundtrack which holds certain songs that get detected by Twitch's identification system when they appear in the game, so I get flagged on something you put in and and haven't taken out, but somehow it's my responsibility? If we have to incorporate "stream safe" modes in our games and come up with alternatives like Epidemic Sound, that states that the problem needs to be dealt with rather than skirted around. We're wasting time and it's getting worse.
The BBC News theme is copyrighted. I didn't buy the license to it but I'm free to hear it every day as I watch the news. At what point does this "muddiness" turn out to really just be bullshit? It's not mud.
Artists deserve to have their work protected, people treat musicians like evil monsters for wanting to be paid for their work, but then turn around and defend artists who draw, paint, etc. Any one who creates, any artist, understands why copyright exists and respects it, because they know what it feels like to create something.

I have one question. I hear big streamers like TheBausffs play famous music in the background when he is live (probably a spotify playlist). This music is obviously copyrighted, but why doesn't he get problems? Is it because the music is not loud enough for systems to pick it up? like, how?
I was going to ask the same thing. Same with Asmongold and Esfand. Asmon still uses Spotify on his stream.
That's crazy. How long did you sing for?
@@gilpaspot9811 I wanna say less than 5 seconds.
@@Cmd135 wtf
@@Cmd135 what song was it?!
You must have a good voice lol
Soundtrack by Twitch is pretty good too. Free, intergrates with OBS, and supplied by Twitch themselves.
and they have copyrighted music on it that will get you chanell muted... like 25% of the songs.
sound track by twitch (beta) is one of the things that has many doing the live music not in vod idea. actually one of their selling points. if you get live muted by harris heller or instrasomething it does split the track and you still get the mute. And basically eljayem says its using music it shouldn't but telling you its ok to do so.
Thanks for this vid. I was under the impression that not having music saved to my VoDs was enough. Definitely gonna check out the services for my stream music.
I was literally just searching for a video like this and then your notification popped up 🤯 Thx again!!
Ive used a Copyright free mix from RUclips for my stream. yeah this stream has 4 copyright strikes and ive needed to cut it out.
Thank you for the info, I started using stream beats on twitch. love it, glad that it is one that you as well recommended
You have chapters anyways so I assume you figured people would skip around though
can i still use sound alerts with copyrighted music?
been using gamechops for almost a year now, really loving their music so much! even listening to the tracks in my free time.
No strikes?
@@HIM_TRAVIS none
There are few things I hate completely. Copyright is one of them
That doesn’t make sense, people are allowed to own the rights to the work they create.
I love hearing lofi video game sounds
Where? I must know this information!!! 😩😂
@@theLvizzle Spotify! I usually search up Pokémon lofi, Mario lofi, anime lofi etc. there’s tons of playlists out there! C:
RUclips is also another great source.
Ok i noticed even if i play Free / copyright free music or NCM / No copyright music it still put my past video unpublished. It's to the point they don't care if its copyright free they want no music to be played om anyone's stream.
Fact that I’m buying music to play and can’t even use it is really stupid lol
why do i see so many streamers playing whatever music they want with no care ?
I thought this too?
This isn’t true :)
Pokémon has always been intense about these sorts of things, Nintendo and gamefreak are just like that, but here is the thing ALL of their other music is totally fine, it’s just one song in the credits.
I use glitchy city myself. There channel is mostly pokemon music remixes with so many choices you can find anything to fit the mood
this was a really long ad.
I provided several free alternatives :)
Yes a video has come out while editing! gonna watch it! already looks great again
That’s a myth, splitting your VoD tracks didn’t protect you, live strikes exist.
Perfect timing:) I’ve been struggling figure this out!
I haven't heard about Chillhop or Gamechops getting claimed, but Epidemic and NCS get claims all of the time so I wouldn't use either of them.
YOURE ALWAYS SO HELPFUL ,
THANK U!!!!!
I'm so confused. Why does XQC play music that is copyrighted and only some parts of his vod are muted. How is he not getting striked or anything?
this is why I used video game music to avoid this madness and it's tons to use that aren't copyrighted.
But you do you sis.
so annoying how we cannot play music 😒 we are literally just trying to vibe its not like we are throwing a concert.
I feel like you didn't watch the video, based on this comment.
Good to meet you at PAX this weekend, keep up the good work and great educational content 👏
Much appreciated! Did we get a Polaroid? Tweet it at me if we did!
@@StreamScheme was too crowded when we met and we were both heading in different directions! See you there next year for a snap ❤️
Bored w/ video after turning into a commercial.
I've had some sections of my twitch vods muted for copyright, but all the music I had on the stream was from NCS
Do you have a vid on how to add the music onto your streams? Like in OBS? if you do sorry for the question lol.
Thanks as always Eljay! 😊
If i were to use a league of legends voice line recording as a sound for my twitch alerts would that be copyright struck? Please help.
I don't play music in my gameplay streams, but does _in-game_ music count? (assuming it's a game that plays their OST like Terraria)
usually not. a game is played by millions over the world so people know the music already. you should be safe!
Depends on the game, ALWAYS check if they have a stream safe option. Many games use copyrighted music and you can get a strike for it playing even though it's in game because you are technically profiting off their art by playing it in your stream.
Video is very helpful! but is there a way to connect your streamdeck to epidemic sound???
Thank You Eljay appreciate the heads up
Might have missed it, but is video game music ok? There's allot of really chill Nintendo music out there.
Not always, which is why I included the example of Gamechops.
Ok so, I heard him mentioned about regular music ie cds Spotify and specific artists, but what about the game music itself?
Chillhop was pretty easy for me to set up on Twitch cause you can just link your account from their site but tbh I'm stuck on how to actually set up gamechops or ncs on twitch. Do i do this through obs? Do you have a video on this?
i just was waiting for the sponsor ;D hahaha
Eljay out here again protecting the community
can we (djs ) mixing on live stream ?
What if you know the rights holder personally and have direct permission to use it?
Ironically, some of the music that I got from NCS was copyrighted. In fact, the very first song that shows up when he sorts by Most Popular, Cartoon's On & On, is the track that gets muted.
The pains of record labels changing hands, same reason I specifically say, if it mutes… stop using it.
Are you able to use Nintey9Lives music on your streams? RUclipsr Ssundee and his friends run that and everything there you just need to post the info from their description.
My biggest problem with streams is I want metal and hard rock
There is barely any metal and rock that's copyright free
I also need a 100% FREE place to get guaranteed copyright free music
I already pay for music streaming services, i dont want to pay for multiple
What about having your vod’s unpublished?
I use the Pretzel Rocks Music App, haven't had problems with it yet.
Wait what about the issue with games having liscensed music in the opening of the game or during the gameplay of the stream
How did you set up a short cut for your stream deck to change music?
Yes ofc it was stupid but my stream got cut for copyright mid stream rather mid House of The Dragon episode. Viewers said a copyright notice popped up and I wasn't able to stream for 2 days(I think).
Another great video, Thank you. Can I make a suggestion...I use 'soundtrack by Twitch', It's completely free but you do need to make sure it's not saved to your vod and should only be used on Twitch.
I’m not a fan of sound track by twitch because the music I use in stream is such a integral part of the content, so if it is taken of the VoD it makes a worse experience.
Been looking into music for my streams an this is just what I needed.... Thank you.... However please turn the secret labs pillow up the right way 😂😂😂
It is the right way, he lives in the down under!
I dont like it sooo and i dont use any filters
why was this uploaded at 1:33am eljay, arent you in AEST time
But Eljay, I frequently stream Batman Arkham Knight and Mass Effect 2, and always get certain parts of those games muted, most notable the portion after Ivy dies and during the Horizon attack cutscene.
I almost cared.. Then you gave a perfect example of why copyright is garbage and we shouldn't respect it
Artists deserve to have their work protected, people treat musicians like evil monsters for wanting to be paid for their work, but then turn around and defend artists who draw, paint, etc.
Any one who creates, any artist, understands why copyright exists and respects it, because they know what it feels like to create something.
