It was Tavis Smiley she was talking about. But it was just an imaginary romance. Members of her own family said Aretha was acting like she was in a romantic relationship with Tavis Smiley but in reality they were just acquaintances. Her late road manager who knew Aretha very well said she regularly made up romances and relationships that didn't exist. Aretha has often spoken about this person she refers to as Mr Mystique. She won't reveal who he is or if he is famous. But she said she had an an on and off relationship with him for decades. Her own siblings believe this person didn't exist and Aretha fabricated the whole thing. What I don't understand is why Aretha would invent these pretend boyfriends when there are tons of powerful men she could be in an actual relationship with. It's just bizarre that she feels the needs to tell the press about these relationships that only exist in her imagination.
