Wow, thanks for sharing this recording. Verdine's distinctive hard plucking style is readily apparent here, and it really helps drive the groove with the other instruments added. #respect
Pretty sure I'm hearing some sort of bridge pickup bite though, my bet is on a Jazz or PJ... Could he have confused this session with another one? I mean it was almost 50 years ago
@@TheBassPanda according to the engineer, the early hits were always played on his Tele/ Precision bass. I own a similar Fender and that pickup has lots of high end bite. Verdine’s isolated bass track sounds just like it..
Listen to it in the mix...it fits perfectly in the groove between the horns, it might sound weird isolated, but that was very much intentional and very much funky.
I’m ready to bite my tongue and no expertise claimed. The occasional pops remind me of the sound of me failing to dial in a compressor pedal. I now recognize it as using too much guitar gain for how sensitive it was. The sound of the lead guitar track in this song is what I was after, but the output resembled the pops we hear in this track
I think this is a mic'd recording, so there is some bleed. Idk if this is an original recording, but if it is then you are hearing the rest of the band leaking into the bass cabinet mic.
Hearing a lot of these old hit's isolated bass tracks is making me realize-- it's not about the cleanliness of the playing.. it's about the pocket 😎
Totally and its not about perfect time either....its so much more than technical perfection.

Sounds like a ‘70s Fender Jazz with the pickups close to the strings.
exactly! and flatwounds =)
Man that song never gets old🤘😁💪💥😎
It seems like Verdine has such a light touch in this recording.
yeah, soft sledgehammer style
@@Pavel_Frantayes, in concert he's a monster but in this recording he's more laid back.
If every note was clipping I'd barely touch the bass aswell
That bass was a late 60s Telecaster bass. I know the recording engineer who did the session.

@@paulnicolosi4792 Interesting, thanks for the follow-up 👍
Yes I actually asked him about what bass he used. It was a Telecaster. It was his go to bass early on.
No way this is telecaster bass
thanks, this is really helpful for learning
man I'm slowly loving bass lines over time. This and mile high club's homage bass is just so good
This helps A LOT! THANK YOU!!! 😊
Are the strings hitting the pickup poles?
yep..good huh
Verdine on top!!!

0:03 Is that a little fail ?!
No it's a little groovy. Still in time.
Some think it is; Most people agree that it's purposeful.

It's what comes from live sessions. Nobody's perfect! I would rather have the flubs than automation.
Is that kick drum making the smack sound?
I think it's the strings hitting the pickups making that sound.

Btw, this is still a beloved bass part!
The popping is the compressor kicking in. In isolation it sounds odd, but in the mix it really marries the bass and kick drum.
