I came here because my friend and I had a disagreement over the pronunciation of stalk based on animal crossing. I guess there is a "stalk market" on the game but he pronounced it "stock market" and had to explain the pun, and I said if he pronounced it properly the pun would explain itself.

Yes, I do get a LOT of flack from people in different parts of the US & Canada! But if you look at an American dictionary like Random House or Webster's, it will show the "typical" pronunciation of hockey as /ˈhɒki/ and stock as /stɒk/. "stalk" is, however, /stɔk/. Once again, different parts of America, especially in the PNW pronounce these words differently. I know that there are different pronunciations in Canada, too! NO ONE is right--but there is a "standard" format which I try to teach!

Thank you very, very much for your video lesson: this is the best explanation on pronunciation of the 'aw' sound I have ever seen.

    Hi Shane
    How are you doing?
Thank you so much for the pronunciation video!
I always lose confidence in saying 'work or walk', but the video you made will help me to improve my pronunciation a lot..

It's a problem, because one teacher will teach you to pronounce a certain way, and then years later another teacher will come and tell you that you've been doing it wrong all this time. And most likely they're not aware of the problem. So you end up very confused.
There are many ways to say all these words. English is like that. If a teacher doesn't know/understand that, it's a problem.
Nevertheless thank you for a very good explanation on how you pronounce them, Sir.

hello, I used to misspoken stalk and stock, now I got a better idea about these words. I found " vet" " wet" " white " are super confusing and difficult to pronounce. would you give a lesson about these words? thank you so much

I also pronounce stalk and stock exactly the same. I guess it depends on where you are from.

"Stalk" and "Stock" are pronounced the same for me as well. (Midwest). "Stahck" sounds very east-coast to me... I also so "Hockey", not "Hahckey"...

THANK YOU, Shane! Hey, I'v come up with another good one:
You are FUN, and you ROCK when you TALK!
Am I right? Does it cover all three vowels?
P.S. Yeah, I was practicing some sounds, hence my nickname, plus it's fun. Glad you liked it!
