Im from Slovakia and yes the “legend of the Blood Countess of Čachtice” is very well know here. The ruins of the Čachtice castle which Elisabeths husband gave her as a gift and where she was later detained and where she died, are still there and are a beautiful sighting. Thank you for highlighting a story from my part of the world.
So interestingly enough, some Hungarian historians believe she was actually framed. The king of Hungary supposedly owed a huge debt to her husband and didn't want to pay it, so when girls in the area started going missing it's surmised that he found a way to pin it on her, and that a lot of witness testimony was probably given u set duress. The 650 number came from one of these witnesses claiming she kept a record in a secret diary of all the victims' names but the diary was never found. This case is so interesting because there's really no way of knowing how much is true or how much (if any) was fabricated. Anyway you're beautiful as always and I loved this video! 💗

I am really interested in this case and the frame-job theory. Another interesting factoid is that no mention of bathing in or drinking blood was ever made in the original trial. That was only added to the story about a hundred years after the fact. The legend of the Blood Countess is questionable, at best.

He took advantage of the French war going on in the 15th century to abuse and mutilate thousands of children. The testimony is horrid - the bodies were piled in his castle walls. He is perhaps also best known for being Joan of Arc's right hand man. Ironically they were both executed in the same day - Joan burnt alive, Gilles (as a white, male, noble) got given 'mercy' and was garrotted before he was burned at the stake. Bathory definitely killed people, but her house arrest (rather than execution) had more to do with the politics of Hungary and Transylvania at the time. If executed, her family would have lost her lands to the central government and aided their goals of invasion.

In my opinion, much if not most of what Rais was accused of was a calculated attempt to associate him with the Devil and thus bring him down politically. Much debated topic but plenty of people don't think he was guilty. After all, Joan of Arc was also falsely accused of witchcraft too.

They were named after Elizabeth bathory because of her “ bathing “ in the blood of her victims. 😊 I thought that was super interesting and watching this reminded me of it.
Even though Elizabeth was a Hungarian noble, she resided in present day Slovakia. The castle ruins of the castle where she was imprisoned still exist near the village of Cachtice, hence its name "Čachtický castle". She is well known in Slovakia, where I'm from and it is still debated whether she was framed for political/money reasons or there was some truth to the claims. There is a movie Bathory from 2008, starring Anna Freil, directed by Slovak director Jakubisko, but I don't know how available it is internationally.

Im from Slovakia and yes the “legend of the Blood Countess of Čachtice” is very well know here. The ruins of the Čachtice castle which Elisabeths husband gave her as a gift and where she was later detained and where she died, are still there and are a beautiful sighting. Thank you for highlighting a story from my part of the world.

So interestingly enough, some Hungarian historians believe she was actually framed. The king of Hungary supposedly owed a huge debt to her husband and didn't want to pay it, so when girls in the area started going missing it's surmised that he found a way to pin it on her, and that a lot of witness testimony was probably given u set duress. The 650 number came from one of these witnesses claiming she kept a record in a secret diary of all the victims' names but the diary was never found. This case is so interesting because there's really no way of knowing how much is true or how much (if any) was fabricated.

I am really interested in this case and the frame-job theory. Another interesting factoid is that no mention of bathing in or drinking blood was ever made in the original trial. That was only added to the story about a hundred years after the fact. The legend of the Blood Countess is questionable, at best.

For another historical figure of horror, who probably killed more than Elizabeth, see Gilles de Rais (Gi-yeh de Ray). He took advantage of the French war going on in the 15th century to abuse and mutilate thousands of children. The testimony is horrid - the bodies were piled in his castle walls. He is perhaps also best known for being Joan of Arc's right hand man. Ironically they were both executed in the same day - Joan burnt alive, Gilles (as a white, male, noble) got given 'mercy' and was garrotted before he was burned at the stake.
Bathory definitely killed people, but her house arrest (rather than execution) had more to do with the politics of Hungary and Transylvania at the time. If executed, her family would have lost her lands to the central government and aided their goals of invasion.
Oh yes! The stuff that Gilles did was HORRIBLE! It’s seriously chilling when you read about what he did, and the pleasure he got from it.
That’s so disturbing! Especially given the fact that Joan is a martyr. It’s truly horrible what happened to her. However, I can’t help but think - why was she hanging out with that horrid person?

In my opinion, much if not most of what Rais was accused of was a calculated attempt to associate him with the Devil and thus bring him down politically. Much debated topic but plenty of people don't think he was guilty. After all, Joan of Arc was also falsely accused of witchcraft too.

Also, back in the day, bathrooms were called ‘ bathory rooms’. Throughout the years, English has changed and shortened terms, so it became ‘ bath rooms’. They were named after Elizabeth bathory because of her “ bathing “ in the blood of her victims. 😊 I thought that was super interesting and watching this reminded me of it.

Even though Elizabeth was a Hungarian noble, she resided in present day Slovakia. The castle ruins of the castle where she was imprisoned still exist near the village of Cachtice, hence its name "Čachtický castle". She is well known in Slovakia, where I'm from and it is still debated whether she was framed for political/money reasons or there was some truth to the claims. There is a movie Bathory from 2008, starring Anna Freil, directed by Slovak director Jakubisko, but I don't know how available it is internationally.

I was thinking the exact same thing! And she started off with peasants.. her baby technically was that because her first lover was beneath her. Then she came to enjoy it and maybe even started taking it out on ppl from nobility not only because it was exciting but because that's was what she was and had to be. In a way doing it to herself.. if that makes sense.
