John Wayne's Favorite Supporting Character Actors

  • Those character actors, actresses and friends Wayne shared the limelight with.
Over a long career John Wayne made many movies, mostly westerns. Of course he didn't do this alone. Aside from sharing the screen with the likes of Maureen O’Hara, James Stewart, Robert Mitchum and many other lead actors. None of these movies would have been possible without the many talented and hard working support actors. Today we will take a look at some of them.

I believe that Bond was first to get into the business and then managed to get his college friend, the chorus boy dancer Michael Marion Morrison into the business also. Michael Marion had a problem that as a dancer he always walked on the balls of his feet and didn't know how to walk as a macho cowboy. His friend Paul Fix taught him to walk by walking slightly pigeon toed. The John Wayne walk.

Wayne's on screen hero character never occurred off screen. His ultra right wing political views bordered on Fascism and his racist private comments have been made public and his movies boycotted by younger populations. Wayne publicly boasted about ruining the careers and running out of town those who opposed his views. No adult woman would have anything to do with him so he managed to marry a very young Mexican girl child to keep him company on set. When she grew up s little she stayed at home taking care of the children. I grew up loving his movies and despising his off screen damage. Only the most gullible buy the on screen character as any version of reality. I fully accept that he was a major asshole until he died, but I still enjoy the screen character movies he made. I believe that as a uoung boy I watched the Rio Bravo hotel scene shoot out being filmed at the original Old Tucson movie set. I have several of his movies on Blu-ray.

I don't know how he could have left out Lee Marvin. Most folks don't know that in the movie Donovans Reef, Robert Mitchum was originally signed for it. Still, one thing that John and Robert always did was play pranks like school kids and they played one on John Ford which caused him to fall into the river he got mad, and instead of firing both John and Robert, he just fired Robert because he loved John too much. So they called a regular of John's and Ford's Lee Marvin to do Robert Mitchum's part.
