Just realized something: Arc tells Shiki to immediately go for the kill instead of maiming him, but this causes Vlov to instinctively defend against him in her route. In Ciel's route, the first time, Shiki aims to dismember his limbs at first and Vlov's instincts don't kick in.
I don't think that has anything to do with Vlov feeling he was going to die or not. The Vlov Arc Route Shiki attacks is already woken up, which only happens when Arcueid drains all his blood. Ciel Route is still using flames when Shiki attacks him, he's still not conscious or even sane enough. And there's, for sure, a remarkable difference in Vlov's skills between both, as he can recognize and adapt to Arc's pattern even while entirely unconscious, but he's shown to be clearly better with his spear when he's awake.
