When you were in the Botanical Gardens and on the platform, did you see the brick buildings? They are the original Stables for the gardens. Also Wellington Harbour had the whole US Pacific Fleet visiting in the 1920's. It's that big! There are visits quite regularly of dolphins, orca and the occasional whale. NZ has a whaling history also. Last whale killed in 1964 in the Cook Strait. Wellerman song was about whaling in NZ. Did you know Mark Twain worked on a Wellerman ship?

Hello or should I say Kia Ora ! .. being a Wellingtonian living in Aus now your family might want to try horse riding in Johnsonville and or there is a tram museum in Paraparaumu where the tram takes you to the beach and back about an hour out of Wellington ! Lovely. While Wellington can get windy at times, it is much overhyped. New Zealand is in the middle of the Roaring Forties, in the middle of the ocean, so is a windy country in general. Anywhere there is a gap in the mountains, between east and west, wind will funnel through. Places such as Palmerston North can be as windy, if not windier than Wellington. However, in saying that, a good blow can be very invigorating. I have seen a backpacker, literally with a large backpack on, leaning almost 45 degrees while walking in to a strong northerly. But, when you get a day like that shown here, and they are more common than most people believe, it is a day to savour and appreciate.
The windiness of Wellington is not just about how hard it can billow, but also how frequent. I don't think there's anywhere else in New Zealand where nearly everybody doesn't even bother to use an umbrella when it rains, if they even own one. I'll leave you with this little quote from the website of a comany that makes wind turbines: _"By the numbers, Wellington is the second windiest city in the world [after Commonwealth Bay, Antarctica]. Not surprisingly, its strong winds have earned the city the nickname of 'Windy Wellington.' Year-round, its average wind speeds are 27 MPH. Winds reaching or exceeding gale force are recorded 233 days out of the year."_

However, zephyrs that aren't noticed in other cities are considered as wind here, so adds to the tally. So frequency can certainly be over-exaggerated. When winds are recorded they are generally done so at either the MET Office, 117 m (384 ft) above sea level, or the airport, both very exposed places, and where one would expect the most wind, unlike the city, or suburbs like Newtown. If you stood at the top of One Tree Hill or the Port Hills then one would expect those places to be windier than down in Auckland or Christchurch. As far as the company that makes wind turbines, of course they are talking of Makara, where the turbine farm is situated, so directly overlooking Cook Strait, and hence very windy. Part of Wellington? yes, but the city? no. One reason I did not move to Palmy North when my place of work shifted there, was because it was windier than Wellington. As far as umbrellas are concerned, yes, people do use them. I use them. If Wellington was as windy as the exaggerations suggest then how would I have been able to grow fruit trees, passionfruit, delicate flowering trees, bushes, and flowers in both Newtown and Rongotai? Yes, the wind blows more often than say places like Levin or Wairoa, but it is not constant, as I said above, even the slightest of zephyrs contribute to the statistic of frequency.

The relevance of them being a wind turbine manufacturer is that, presumably, they are a reliable source for interpreting wind data and making general statements about it. Not that any of that matters anyway, because Wellington's wind data from the airport in Rongotai is highly comparable to that collected from the Brother's Island wind station in the Cook Strait. And I think it goes without saying that just because you go to the immense trouble of doing literal battle with the wind in order to use your umbrella, it doesn't mean that many other people do. In any ordinary city, nearly everyone will use an umbrella on a rainy day, whereas in Wellington you'll never see more than a handful of people even when it _isn't_ windy because umbrella ownership is so uncommon, and anyone who claims to have seen otherwise if a flat out liar. In regards to wind data, I don't see how it's reasonable to discard the data recorded at the MET Office in Kelburn when other parts of the city (such as Karori) are at a similar or at least partial elevation, not to mention the data from the airport that is at similar elevation and exposure to the central city and the coastal suburbs, which together account for most of the city. Newtown is one of the few inland suburbs in Wellington, so its not unexpected that it should have less severe and/or less frequent winds. You can't just discard scientific data for not representing the city when it's entirely representative of the city. Most of Wellington is coastal like the airport, and most of what isn't has elevations akin to Kelburn. In fact, a number of suburbs are both coastal _and_ elevated. Like, the airport is literally _in_ Rongotai where they collect data, so your contention that Rongotai isn't very windy because you grew some trees and bushes there is contradictory to the actual data that says Rongotai is most certainly windy. Honestly, since when was the ability to grow trellised fruits a valid measure of wind severity? Did you even grow them in the middle of the street? Or did you grow them in your sheltered backyard? The presence of severe wind, frequent or otherwise, is not a factor in scientific wind data, partially because such wind doesn't automatically remove the possibility of growing delicate plants in the area, it just increases their vulnerability and might require additional measures to ensure their protection. I don't know what you're citing in regard to the zephyrs that aren't registered in other cities, but they're likely ignored because they're below the threshold for measuring (or because the term zephyr doesn't actually have any technical meaning other than to denote directionality). Whereas, in Wellington, a 'light breeze' is 16MPH, which is 1 or even 2 categories higher on the Beaufort scale than a typical breeze elsewhere. Furthermore, any inclusion of zephyrs in Wellington's wind data is ultimately irrelevant as the statistic of frequency that I cited concerns gale force gusts, which are typically measured in Wellington on nearly two thirds of the days in the year. The measurement or non-measurement of zephyrs has no bearing upon the strength and frequency of those gusts, which are both the strongest on average and most frequent of any (actual) city in the world. Moreover, I don't really know what you're citing in regard to anything, as the claim that Palmerston North is windier than Wellington has been thoroughly debunked with Wellington exceeding it appreciably on all wind metrics. Wellington's average wind speeds even exceed Palmerston North's typical gusts according to the World Weather Online website. Like, it seems as though you're refuting the scientific and statistical determination that Wellington is windy, and indeed the windiest city, based upon your personal and horticultural experiences at your Newtown and Rongotai homes, rather than any actual scientific data or even merely an arguement with rational merit. Unfortunately, though, your respectable ability to cultivate passionfruit in a windy climate does not constitute evidence that said climate isn't windy. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, I assume that you're merely desensitised to the actual severity of Wellington's wind and feel that it is therefore overhyped, but in reality all of the claims made about Wellington's windiness are very much backed by data that is representative of the city's coastal and elevated landscape. Moreover, these geographical features are not an anomaly in the city's weather data but, in fact, a primary cause of its severity.
You where doubly fortunate.. The smooth sea passage.. A day in Wellington without wind.. Double bonus.. You really do walking marathons .. You must all be fit..
Always enjoy your vids. The 'Christmas' trees along Oriental Bay when you got down are Norfolk Island Pines. Ah you asked at the Botanic Gardens. The church you mention for perspective is a Monastery, and it is for sale. Right after that the trees have changed to Pohutukawa trees. These are what we call NZ Christmas trees as they flower at that time. As you can see, developers have managed to buy up many of the old character houses and built flats. It was much nicer in years past. They had to dig a great many people up to put the motorway (freeway) through the cemetery; it was not popular. At 24:11 where you mention about the statues all leaning, the building there is the Old Government Building and is constructed completely of wood. I think it is mostly Kauri and the timber was sawn to mimic stone. Until 1998 it was the second largest wooden building in the world, Osaka Castle being the largest.
Yes. So right. We do wind very well. The only place where rain comes at you horizontally. You might want to buy Blunt umbrellas. If they can survive here they can survive anywhere.
My hometown for 45 years until I moved to Auckland. There is a saying which you've probably heard "You can't beat Wellington on a good day" and you had a good day!
You did well with the weather. On the really windy days they put ropes out across the traffic intersections so that people can pull themselves across the road. Once all of the people have crossed the the ropes drop to the ground and the cars just drive over the top of them ;-)
There's a saying that goes you can't beat Wellington on a good day and this day sure was a good day. Yeah it can be windy but it's nowhere near as bad as its madam out to be. It's just that when we get high winds we seem to get it full force. The shelter you were describing towards the end of the for rain and wind would be one of the windiest spots in the city. It seems to intensify right at that intersection for some reason. I have seen people holding onto poles so as not to get blown over and at a standstill unable to move forward into the wind many times.
Glad you are enjoying Wellington, well, so far :-). You all did very well in walking that distance. That is part of what makes Wellington such an easy city in which to live. You can walk just about everywhere. If you had more time and it was summer, then walking (or better still, cycling) around the bays from Lyall Bay to Seatoun, Scorching Bay, Shelly Bay, Evans Bay, Oriental Bay, then catching the Houghton Bay bus to your [current] doorstep is a doozy of a day out. An all-day walk, not for the faint of heart, but very worthwhile. Another is Petone Beach to Eastbourne. There are so many great walks, too numerous to mention here. Bush walks, hilltop walks, river walks. All best done in summer or early autumn though. I am surprised the Houghton Bay bus wasn't operating when you first arrived, it would have saved you a trek up that zigzag or the very steep Hungerford Road.
Wow. I got tired just watching y'all walking and walking and walking! A huge 2 "Thumbs Up" for the whole journey and still had a wonderful smile at the end. My girls would have baled walking that far. Full credit to the girls for the entertainment and not once (could have been edited but I'm willing to believe what I saw) did they whinge. Remarkle kids you have mom. Oh and Dad too. Thanx Mom and girls I enjoyed the tour even though I am born and bred on the East coast, Nth Island between Wangamata and Mt Maunganui I had only been to Wellington twice and never knew how much Wellington had to offer. Those trails that you walked down off Mt Victoria through the trees was where Peter Jackson filmed the Lord of the Rings scene where Frodo told the others to "get off the road" to hide from the ring wraith death riders.
We spent lockdown in Queenstown and when we left things were just starting to open up so we didn’t get the full experience of it. Maybe we’ll have to come back one day.

@@johnpaki1534 It's also worth pointing out that Commonwealth Bay isn't really a city, and barely even qualifies as an inhabited location, so really Wellington ought to be considered the windiest city in the world. The only reason why Commonwealth Bay takes the accolade is because Guinness World Records says so (which, realistically, means that some Antarctic organisation paid them to say so).

The presence of severe wind, frequent or otherwise, is not a factor in scientific wind data, partially because such wind doesn't automatically remove the possibility of growing delicate plants in the area, it just increases their vulnerability and might require additional measures to ensure their protection.
I don't know what you're citing in regard to the zephyrs that aren't registered in other cities, but they're likely ignored because they're below the threshold for measuring (or because the term zephyr doesn't actually have any technical meaning other than to denote directionality). Whereas, in Wellington, a 'light breeze' is 16MPH, which is 1 or even 2 categories higher on the Beaufort scale than a typical breeze elsewhere.
Furthermore, any inclusion of zephyrs in Wellington's wind data is ultimately irrelevant as the statistic of frequency that I cited concerns gale force gusts, which are typically measured in Wellington on nearly two thirds of the days in the year. The measurement or non-measurement of zephyrs has no bearing upon the strength and frequency of those gusts, which are both the strongest on average and most frequent of any (actual) city in the world.
Moreover, I don't really know what you're citing in regard to anything, as the claim that Palmerston North is windier than Wellington has been thoroughly debunked with Wellington exceeding it appreciably on all wind metrics. Wellington's average wind speeds even exceed Palmerston North's typical gusts according to the World Weather Online website.
Like, it seems as though you're refuting the scientific and statistical determination that Wellington is windy, and indeed the windiest city, based upon your personal and horticultural experiences at your Newtown and Rongotai homes, rather than any actual scientific data or even merely an arguement with rational merit. Unfortunately, though, your respectable ability to cultivate passionfruit in a windy climate does not constitute evidence that said climate isn't windy.
Giving you the benefit of the doubt, I assume that you're merely desensitised to the actual severity of Wellington's wind and feel that it is therefore overhyped, but in reality all of the claims made about Wellington's windiness are very much backed by data that is representative of the city's coastal and elevated landscape. Moreover, these geographical features are not an anomaly in the city's weather data but, in fact, a primary cause of its severity.

The 'Christmas' trees along Oriental Bay when you got down are Norfolk Island Pines. Ah you asked at the Botanic Gardens. The church you mention for perspective is a Monastery, and it is for sale. Right after that the trees have changed to Pohutukawa trees. These are what we call NZ Christmas trees as they flower at that time.
As you can see, developers have managed to buy up many of the old character houses and built flats. It was much nicer in years past.
They had to dig a great many people up to put the motorway (freeway) through the cemetery; it was not popular.
At 24:11 where you mention about the statues all leaning, the building there is the Old Government Building and is constructed completely of wood. I think it is mostly Kauri and the timber was sawn to mimic stone. Until 1998 it was the second largest wooden building in the world, Osaka Castle being the largest.

Yes. So right. We do wind very well. The only place where rain comes at you horizontally. You might want to buy Blunt umbrellas. If they can survive here they can survive anywhere.
My hometown for 45 years until I moved to Auckland. There is a saying which you've probably heard "You can't beat Wellington on a good day" and you had a good day!
You did well with the weather. On the really windy days they put ropes out across the traffic intersections so that people can pull themselves across the road. Once all of the people have crossed the the ropes drop to the ground and the cars just drive over the top of them ;-)

There's a saying that goes you can't beat Wellington on a good day and this day sure was a good day. Yeah it can be windy but it's nowhere near as bad as its madam out to be. It's just that when we get high winds we seem to get it full force. The shelter you were describing towards the end of the for rain and wind would be one of the windiest spots in the city. It seems to intensify right at that intersection for some reason. I have seen people holding onto poles so as not to get blown over and at a standstill unable to move forward into the wind many times.

Glad you are enjoying Wellington, well, so far :-). You all did very well in walking that distance. That is part of what makes Wellington such an easy city in which to live. You can walk just about everywhere. If you had more time and it was summer, then walking (or better still, cycling) around the bays from Lyall Bay to Seatoun, Scorching Bay, Shelly Bay, Evans Bay, Oriental Bay, then catching the Houghton Bay bus to your [current] doorstep is a doozy of a day out. An all-day walk, not for the faint of heart, but very worthwhile. Another is Petone Beach to Eastbourne. There are so many great walks, too numerous to mention here. Bush walks, hilltop walks, river walks. All best done in summer or early autumn though. I am surprised the Houghton Bay bus wasn't operating when you first arrived, it would have saved you a trek up that zigzag or the very steep Hungerford Road.
You're right, it's super easy to get around with the buses and walking. Those other walks sound great!

Wow. I got tired just watching y'all walking and walking and walking! A huge 2 "Thumbs Up" for the whole journey and still had a wonderful smile at the end. My girls would have baled walking that far. Full credit to the girls for the entertainment and not once (could have been edited but I'm willing to believe what I saw) did they whinge. Remarkle kids you have mom. Oh and Dad too. Thanx Mom and girls I enjoyed the tour even though I am born and bred on the East coast, Nth Island between Wangamata and Mt Maunganui I had only been to Wellington twice and never knew how much Wellington had to offer. @@johnpaki1534 It's also worth pointing out that Commonwealth Bay isn't really a city, and barely even qualifies as an inhabited location, so really Wellington ought to be considered the windiest city in the world. The only reason why Commonwealth Bay takes the accolade is because Guinness World Records says so (which, realistically, means that some Antarctic organisation paid them to say so).
