Sanders trains mostly indoors due to having been involved in multiple accidents with cars and for the increased training benefit. Indoor training is known to produce great results and no one knows this more than Lionel Sanders! He conducts the majority of his training indoors either on the turbo trainer or a treadmill. Some of the sessions he does sound seriously hard! Sanders has even got the stage where he prefers to train inside than venturing out.

How much training do you do indoors?
All of it apart from 3 weeks before a race where I then do cycle/running outside.
90% indoors. more convenient and less blood!
3-4 months in the winter and the occasional session after that
Almost all of it, except for the 'long' bike ride. 5h indoors is just not fun. Samorin challenge with Lucy Charles and Sanders winning, shows that indoor training seems to be the new way of training...
Only when the weather outside is really nasty. Otherwise, I prefer hitting the road.
Love this bloke , when ever i feel like not training I just watch one of lionels videos for motivation. He's a role model.
Man crush out 👊
so true
Im so with you bro, he's awesome
11mph treadmill at 122bpm - he does 270 watts for an hour at 106bpm - his metabolic systems are other worldly
this interview is next-level fantastic. More pro in-depth interview in future please!!
This guy is an absolute machine . I am convinced that the very best Triathletes have extraordinarily high capacities for enduring boredom (plus the physical pain)
I'd watch Lionel talk about literally anything. Have him on as much as possible!
Not normally commented on, but Heather is an excellent interviewer. Really great follow up and recall of the interview answers to build the conversation.
Sanders is epic, freaking legend
I totally did not recognize him with his shirt on.
haha!!!
comment of the week haha
how can someone not like lionel? great guy
Alexander Gretener I Almost think he gave out too much details of his training secrets
More like that PLEASE! Best Triathlon Interview EVER!!!!
Excellent! Great information.
Thank you GTN ! Lionel is the man !
My favorite GTN video so far 👌🏽
I’ve been waiting for this interview since GTN was announced. Thank you!!
Thank you for this, I’m a big LS fan and love his indoor set ups. 😺👍🏽
Best Lionel interview ever ! Great information !!
Lionel is the greatest, do anything you can to get him again❤❤❤
By far my favorite pro! Down to earth, motivational, and such a machine
Great video, really interesting insight into Lionel's training. Love his 'warm-up' at 250-280 watts! Really hope he nails it at Kona this year. Go Lionel!
Really great interview. Even for someone who trained indoor 80% of the time, there are still so many nuggets of wisdom gain by watching this interview. Great job GTN and thanks Lionel Sanders for sharing youe knowledge and experience of indoor training!
Brilliant advice! This video motivated me to start wanting to train indoors now
Best GTN video so far!
Dang, 250-280w as warm up. 😂 I have some training to do...
PlanesTrainsAutos that's my FTP lol
Alien Sanders
he's a maniac - 260+ watts for 2 hours at 106BPM
An amazing interview. Keep up the great work. Pros helping beginners. Only in triathlon!! Epic
Absolutely FANTASTIC INSIGHT. Just amazing and priceless advice. Thank you!
Great video! Lionel you are the boss! keep up the great work mate!
love this type of interview!! incredible athlete! more of these please
This was an awesome interview. Indoor training is great for busy families. My wife and I work opposite schedules a few times a week and being able to train indoors is perfect with 2 kids. I can get a run in on the treadmill and if i need to tend to the kids i can just hop off and get back on when the 'crisis' is averted. I just need to get a bike trainer or a set of rollers now.
excellent interview Heather, well done Lionel
This was awesome! Thanks for it!
Great interview, so much helpful tips. No BS , love it. 🙏
Brilliant interview, thanks
this is one of the best interviews !!!!
Very inspiring interview!!!
Awesome guy! Thanks a lot for the video. Really interessting - I also like Indoor training a lot, because of its convenience and possibilities to get a good control
great great great interview
I enjoyed this, for the most part.
Really awesome interview =]
Great insights into the strategies and tenacity required to improve in pro triathlon, with an approach that age-group triathletes can integrate into their training. I have watched lots of videos with Sanders. He is an inspiring fellow to behold. Excellent interview all around!
Great interview by Heather👍 Lionel is the real deal, what a legend. 💪💪
Lummers70 thank you, Lionel was a pleasure to interview.
Heather Fell you’re welcome. Great questions and flow. You could tell Lionel enjoyed the interview. 👍
Heather your face when Lionel was talking about race power numbers was classic! I would love to know what went through your head at that moment.
Boris Markus, really I'll need to look again!
“There should be no such thing as ‘This is not ideal for me’. That’s just a mental block that you’ve created for yourself. And so anytime you ever find one, that’s a great gift because its an area to improve upon.” - such optimism and focus on continuous improvement. Words to live by.
Yes but its boring. I want te get out in the nature. I dont want to stare in to a wall
That's a fine excuse, but that's not the point. This quote is much broader than exercising indoors.
I didn't use that as an excuse. Dont get me wrong mate I just stated why may people rather train outside. It's not about just getting that power, its about enjoying life and sports. I live in a place where there is zero traffic lights. But i do agree that some indoor training should be added to every training plan.
Also its important to train outside on the hot sun, if you don't the Kona sun will kill you :D Sanders stated many times that only training indoors hurt him in the few races.
agree, beautifully said
This is incredible. So informative. This man is an idle of mine and a true legend. Always either entertaining or very informative in his videos! Thank you Champ!
Idol. Idle has quite a different meaning.
Thanks GTN for bringing us a fantastic interview with one of the sports most incredible athletes. I’m delighted to learn that he’s partnered with Canyon Bikes and wait with eager anticipation to see how will progress. Ride on Lionel!
...and i was pumped after running 10 miles today and not getting out of HR zone 2 till the last half minute of my run. thanks for crushing my self esteem. :-P
Brilliant video guys!
Great to have access to high quality information, thanks.
Thanks Tim
Please more, this kind is information is hard to find on the internet
Best vlog I have seen on GTN - good interview. This time you dont look and sound like Country File!
that was awesome. big ups
Funny, how Lionel has become such a well known triathlete in recent weeks. He is killing it in on Zwift races against the biggest names.
Fantastic interview. Take away. Stop putting up mental blockers. Always improving.
Wow! The man is a beast, physically and mentally! Great interview for information and motivation.
This is one of the best video on your channel. Still recovering from a bad bike/car crash, I know that I’ll get a lot more indoor trainings this year. It would have been interesting to know where he gets his training plan from and how he transfers it into Zwift
Such a great guy!
The Legend himself.
Great Q & A
I see Lionel I like
Brilliant
Really interesting, thanks ;-)
Brilliant. Nuf said.
Awesome!
He used to coach my triathlon club. True story. Hamilton Hammerheads, Canada.
Great interview...
Michael Harris thank you.
We love you Lionel you're a star!!! 😎🤘
Legend
Long interview, and it was a whizz to watch. Excellent work, but Sanders also has a way of talking about dull things in such an interesting manner!
Dull things? What dull things? Maybe I didn't notice :P
Any suggestions for a iPad 12.9 stand to use with Zwift? Thank you for the blog today. Very helpful. JSP.
wow. nice
Packing heat
Lionel is the best!!!
Lionel is clearly a patron of the Growth Mindset. I assume he’s read Carol Dweck and Josh Waitzkin’s books. Can’t wait for his book!
11 mph at 125BPM. What?
know this is a late reply. Watched a zwift race he done lately and won. His HR maxed out about 150bpm he has freakishly low max HR
@@ryzo7324 that just means he knows it is a long distance race and not a sprint. His maximum heart rate is prolly 200 or so ...
Agni Das wasn’t too long a race in fairness mate and he started going for it, about maybe about three quarters of the way through the race, for me I’d be near 170-180 and I’ve maxed 196 recently
Says he's afraid of dying on the bike; then does a 180 and says putting his treadmill up against a wall is great because he is motivated by the fear of death.
this was so cool, thank you for this amazing interview! If there would be a possibility to ask him more questions, could you ask him how the posture on a treadmill is different from outside and how he adapt for that? I am sure there are many better questions to ask but we all run om treadmills so could be interresting for all of us!
Erwin Wieringa, that is a good point, certainly a question for the future.
Woww!! monster Sanders!!!!!!!!
I started the same thing a year ago and I can say I got better
Congratulations to Canyon! They've got the most interessting triathlet og our time! Congratulations to you, Lionel! You've got one of the very best biskes in the world! This will be a win win win-situation! Step by step bits and pieces are coming together.
Oh, that Slovak speech in the background is funny to hear :D
Watching this in aero ✌️🇨🇦✌️
I wanna start on tri and i dont even have a bike and this video motivated me ti start at home. But, do u recomend me to buy a static bike or a normal bike to use It later?
cooles Ding, gibt es auch bald nächstes Racevideo von Johann?
when i need more wattios... i see this video....thanks
Hey, I’m in this! Awesome. In the Energy Lab at 7:02. Haha.
What woodway does he use?
Excellent video thank you very insightful! Sorry to hear Lionel had to have the experiences to find indoor training.
I only train indoors during winter/bad weather. I much prefer training outside for both biking and running.
Honestly, I think the host eyes was zoomin' on his crutch.🤣 Judging via the way he seats 🙈nohomo
leyend
Treadmill smart speed app is great for treadmil zwifting, much better than a footpod.
Lionel Sanders is a modern day Dave Scott #numbersdontlie
320w like it's nothing. I wish.
He have a tough body.
He has got big chest for a swimmer and cyclist. Does he do any hypertrophy training? Is it normal for a triathlete?
Genetics
Go 🇨🇦
👍👍👍👍
There's gold to mine by raising your fatmax. Good luck Lionel!
Lionel needs to put a towel on his bike. I hold it in place by tucking it under the bottle that I put in the bottle holder.
Can’t stand Zwift personally. My setup is simplest magnetic turbo-trainer + powermeter on my bike + fan in front of me. Music is the best drug and motivator.
