The water is contaminated, and the aquifers are not immune from contamination. The contents of the whole town needs to removed and treated as toxic contaminated material. Who knows how many years the soil on the farms will be unsafe for farming? How far down stream will the toxins be carried? A lot of people are going to become ill, and many will die. The railroad will fight every expense for decades, or simply declare bankruptcy. The ultimate long term financial costs of the disaster will will be borne by the U.S. taxpayers. All this because the railroad didn't want to pay for installing more detectors on the approaches to the community.
