My pops bought himself a Type R. He’s 76 and was bummed that he didn’t buy one of the integra type R’s when they were around. So when the new R was available he went to the local dealer and bought it.
Thanks for actually pushing the car on the back roads so we can see the character of the car and cabin sound (without wind whipping the mic). This was the best Type-R review yet and I think it's motivated me to buy one. +1 sub
Also, If it's anything like our engines (K24z7s) the Type R probably has a CDV (Clutch Delay Valve) that causes 2nd gear to grind. If you take out your slave cylinder and remove the delay valve your clutch pedal feel will be stiffer, but it will allow the fluid to flow better and lessen the probability of you grinding second. Hope that lil idea opens up a window of solution for ya.
I always come back to your videos for the neutral honest, non biased advice and great content they have, answering most of the questions one looking to buy this car would have. If only I could afford it now lol.. btw, I remember having 3rd gear grind/pop out years ago when I had my 07 Si Coupe.. even though Honda gear boxes are great, this seems to be an common issue with them. I remember a Service Bulletin/recall was created for it..(it was the synchronizers and 3rd gear that had to be changed).. I tell you from experience, Honda will not address it unless enough owners complaint. Keep up the great work Elias!
Awesome review, I have a 2016 EX-T, I live in Northern Ontario Canada and with winter tires on, I have no real winter driving issues over awd car. There is a owner here driving his 2017 type R.
The exhaust mods sound just right and those wheels are a HUGE improvement over the stock ones. They look like Enkei Sport RC-T4s to me, and those were dream wheels for me seven years ago. I never really liked the look of the FK5/6/8 Civics, but this is the best and most mature looking example I've seen yet...reminds me of the old GRB Subaru WRX STI hatchbacks in all the right ways. Cheers
I have no idea if this will help you, but in my Civic Si, I switched to synchro mesh transmission fluid. I also only used Royal Purple, which helped a lot. IDK if these will help you, but they help me in my Si. Never had issues with shifting grind after that.
A type R would be an amazing daily if it had the 5th seat and honda sensing. I really need the 5th seat because once in a while someone comes along and has to use the 5th seat. Can't just leave one person hanging. However the prices are still crazy! I'd wait for them to produce more so people can buy them closer to sticker
Gouki818 I swear honda is like vw. By that I mean they save (better) features for other countries like type R not getting sensing or the civic hatch sport not getting the big 7in touchscreen in US models. Or not giving sport touring hatches a manual in the US
Hopefully you're not still waiting lol. I was doing the same thing but they're not going down. I bought a 2017 today with 2000 miles. Has the AWE Touring Exhaust, PRL HVI intake and Catted downpipe plus Unlocked ECU and Hondata. All the mods were done 3 weeks before I bought it. The receipt from the install and parts invoice was on the glove box I paid $37,500. They gave me $28,500 for my 19 Si with 33,000 miles on it. With the low miles and mods on there that I would have done anyway, I couldn't pass it up
@@thinkforyourself5672 surprisingly I did wait...still am but for the next gen. I've got a regular civic hatch since commenting tho. I've also driven a few type Rs and they are a blast to drive but I'm waiting for the next Gen and I'm hoping it'll be worth the wait
I think about content and feedback. Your fleet is just dope. If you bought a nsx I think you would have the honda dream garage. But my thing to you is I personally love your content and I think you should try for more collaberations
Can you show a video of you going down a straight without touching the steering wheel whole accelerating to show that there really is no torque steer? Whats the off set on your wheel?
Thanks for the video - holy shit that gear grind! Throws me right off that! My Mk2 Focus RS had more power than this, never one issue with the box, but the reason I didn't pick one of these up - the FWD! Focus RS mk2 pretty much has the same set-up in the front suspension and LSD. An absolute killer when rolling and in the twisties, but no 0-100 king
Sounds much better with muffler delete Once you start tuning I think you will like even more Had to tune mine to get best from it but slightly different as 200 hp N/a But still will make difference once mods are more readily available plus ECU tune Sounds like suspension is pretty sorted from factory Maybe if some geometry setup to improve handling although sounds pretty awesome as is The other video getting 400 hp form manifold with ECU tune would make a big difference from stock
I think the suspension could benefit from camber adjustments, other than that, it's pretty good to go. Some people are lowering them, but mostly for looks.
I really wish to get this car, but this grinding gear stuff really worries me to be fair... But the nice part is it can pretty much to anything right ? 😏
How does it handle in the snow? I used to live in Pittsburgh, now West Virginia. We have similar snowfall. Being a Firefighter, we cant have snow days and i am afraid of what the ground effects below the front bumper will do with snow.
That grind is horrible! I’ve gotta say that would be enough to get out of the car (if Honda didn’t fix it) for me. Of the videos you’ve made about the grind...that’s the worst I’ve heard it. I really hope they come up with a fix for you!!
I'm interested in a type r 2018, not sure if they fixed the grind for that year, probably not, as i haven't heard anything. The MX-5 had a transmission issue for 2016 and resolved it for 2017 onward, very quick and efficient of them to do especially considering how much smaller Mazda is compared to Honda. Really makes me lean on the Miata because of that service.
One thing I've noticed is that daily driving brake performance goes to shit once the weather gets down to about 20 degrees out. Been the biggest problem here for me in Minnesota, the brakes don't heat up enough unless I make a point of heating them up on purpose. I guess it's the hybrid brake pad compound. Was slowing down to take a left turn at a "fun" speed when out of nowhere a guy came out in front of me from where I was turning into, so I had to slam on the brakes. The brake pads just didn't grip the rotors. Didn't crash but it was scary. This was after about 40 minutes of liesurely driving around Lake Minnetonka (Absolutely beautiful drive but too much traffic on the lakeside roads to have any fun).
that's very true, the brake pads like this will not work well in the dead of winter, I make sure I warm them up on the downhill section out of my house, seems to work ok for now.
It’s the vents. The type r has vent to cool the brakes during hi performance but unfortunately they work as a freezer vent in the winter preventing heating at the beginning of a drive. Wish they would have added a switch to close this or open. Mine having this issue in Massachusetts
I just bought my 19 sonic grey pearl. I got the appearance protection film from Autonation. Do you think it will be enough to protect it, it is parked outside underneath a tree that drops lots of dust. I have a car cover i’m only going to put on when it rains.
I'm thinking about putting all seasons on the WRX and run it in the winter instead. As for the lighter flywheel, I want to try the ECU tune first, just waiting for Ktuner to come out.
+Jakub Smoczyński hi there, I just saw your message on civicx, yes it's still happening a lot, haven't caught it on video on a while hence why I didn't mention it, but as the temperatures drop I'm getting more and more lockouts
What wheel and tire size do you have on your 18 inch setup? I’m picking my gorgeous Red R-0626 tomorrow and need to buy some winter tires ASAP. Thanks!
Hey beautiful car. I just got my type R 3 weeks ago and I want to know where did you get your rims and tires? I live upstate NY so I want to get all season tires now for the winter. Thanks in advance
Type Rs aren't worth it considering how much cheaper you can build a faster Honda yourself, 10gen type R has a k20 turbo making 300ish horsepower, u can turbo a 7, 8 ,9th gen civic si with the k20/k24 and make same or more power than a 10gen Type R for way way less than a new 10gen , 30k for a turbo k20 car is a rip off
If you spin the tires like that in a RWD drive car and you aren't that good of a driver you are going to crash. There's plenty of compilations on youtube showing just that. Imho that's the beauty of a well designed setup fwd car. If you get a little wheelspin in a straight line it's no big deal. If you get some while pulling out of a corner just ease of the throttle a little and off you go. Rwd drive needs steering correction as soon as you loose traction. For some people that is not a good thing. But even when you are a great driver I feel like fwd can be very fun and rewarding to drive.
+Nic B for sure, I have an S2000 that I have fun with, and power on oversteer can be scary if you're not ready for it. Worse yet is snap oversteer, that happens when you let off the gas mid corner, the S2000 rear end jolts up, tires get off camber and lose grip. I love both platforms, and now I have an AWD setup to play with can't wait to let loose...
+Nic B oh man that too! This is why practice makes perfect. I purposely left bad tires on my S2000 so I could practice losing grip at lower speeds, gotten quite good now, think I'm ready to step it up
The Type R is the best car they currently make. I test drove the Focus RS, the WRX Sti, the Golf R and the 370Z and none of them give me the excitement that the Type R gives me. It's made a great addition to the stable - currently own a 335d, Subaru WRX, Honda Prelude and Honda S2000 as well as the Type R
I have $50,000 to put down bow for a sick car coming out in 2020. I need this ride more than anything. It will beat this awesome Civic Type R, any Mercedes AMG models, any BMW M models, any Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Dodge Demon and yes even the Nisan GT-R Nismo. The top speed is over 250mph and it does 0 to 60mph in 1.9/seconds, unless you're fat AF!!! I'm stoked 777 day's til I get my new Tesla 😍❤😍❤😁😁😁😁
Sure if delivery ever happens on time...hope Tesla has figured out how to support enthusiasts that actually drive hard in the mountains or a track by then. Would be very disappointing to still be unable to finish hot laps without overheating or needing a charge after finally making it to some switchbacks...
Joe Friday it’s not an ‘issue’ per say but more of a design limitation. Current top spec Teslas are heavy cars, the battery itself is about 2200 pounds. Huge battery pack, hard to keep it cool under heavy driving so around a racetrack (not a drag strip) they usually go into limp mode after a lap or two. Rendering them about as trackable (for now) as a run of the mill family sedan. Also your range is significantly reduced after pushing it hard. Petrol cars can often fill up at the track. Electric? Maybe you can plug in but it’s an inconvenience instead of just being able to drive home.
Hit that thumbs up to help me out! Thanks for watching. Tomorrow's video will contain Subaru content 😀
Hi! what phone holder is it that you're using?
Ricardo Lima hi Ricardo, here's the phone mount he's using. ruclips.net/video/TzeGQC_TcaQ/видео.html

FlyinGato bro. If u knew this car has gear grinding and lockout, would u still buy it?
Type r in canada is bargain.
THUMBS up..... for you.
My pops bought himself a Type R. He’s 76 and was bummed that he didn’t buy one of the integra type R’s when they were around. So when the new R was available he went to the local dealer and bought it.
+al ortiz I don't blame him, the type R is amazing
Cool story
it feels like that will be me. gonna be so old for me to be able to afford such a nice car.
Thanks for actually pushing the car on the back roads so we can see the character of the car and cabin sound (without wind whipping the mic). This was the best Type-R review yet and I think it's motivated me to buy one. +1 sub
3 months = "long term" review
Jeez, everything is so disposable these days, what a shame
It's as long term as it gets for Type Rs (FK8)
FlyinGato I understand that, but I feel it is a bit of a stretch to call this a "long term" review
I have a few things to look at - Trans fluid, CDV, shift fork. We shall see...

yea shouldn't be too bad in the winter as long as you know what you're doing right?
FlyinGato for sure, I also drive tractor trailers and dump truck up here too and our ridgeline

So glad I found your channel bro. Been watching your videos nonstop. You've got my support!
Thanks man!! Lots of work and racing to be done in 2019 😀
👍 love your videos man.
Thanks man!
Your video quality is increasing. Keep it up. Nice job.
Thanks Jonah! hard to up the quality with daily videos, but I'll keep at it.
FlyinGato you’re welcome. Don’t feel pressured to release daily. One or two a week is probably plenty. Happy Thanksgiving!

The Fk8 is amazing. I’m in love.
It's a great car for the money!
I think about content and feedback. Your fleet is just dope. If you bought a nsx I think you would have the honda dream garage. But my thing to you is I personally love your content and I think you should try for more collaberations
Thanks man! Collabs are starting to roll in, the WRX work is going to be fun, so will the Prelude
Nice video.... i’m definitely considering buying one
It's a great hot hatch!
Can you show a video of you going down a straight without touching the steering wheel whole accelerating to show that there really is no torque steer? Whats the off set on your wheel?
Will do, offset is +45mm

Nice to know someone else other than me is driving theirs I just got my first oil change.
yessir! IT's too fun not to drive.
Elias, where I used to live (in Western NJ) I enjoyed those back country winding roads as much as you do. Now, I'm in Boynton Beach Fla - Boring!!
I lived in Ft Lauderdale for a year, glad I came back up!
Mad elf ale ... I had some way back when I was working in Kennett square. Pretty good ale in moderation ....lol
LOVE me some mad elf
I really wish to get this car, but this grinding gear stuff really worries me to be fair...
But the nice part is it can pretty much to anything right ? 😏
why driving with the economy mode gauge?.....do you have a boost gauge like in the base model?
I do have the boost gauge, but changed it to fuel economy to let you guys know how the fuel econ has been, just forgot to change it back!
How does it handle in the snow? I used to live in Pittsburgh, now West Virginia. We have similar snowfall. Being a Firefighter, we cant have snow days and i am afraid of what the ground effects below the front bumper will do with snow.
Anything under 6 inches of snow the car will do fine as long as you have the right tires. Anything more, I'd get a truck
That grind is horrible! I’ve gotta say that would be enough to get out of the car (if Honda didn’t fix it) for me. Of the videos you’ve made about the grind...that’s the worst I’ve heard it. I really hope they come up with a fix for you!!

Parking it under a tree isn't usually good, but the paint protection will help
@FlyinGato could you do a vid on the interior, like the infotainment, ambient lighting and stuff?
Thank you
Will do bud.
Really impressed with the sound of the exhaust mod the more I hear it
Thanks Zack!
What exactly 18 Inch size do you have for winter tyres? Thanx
Ive never driven a type R before, can u see what gear you’re in on the screen when youre driving like how u can see it in the newer STI ?
+Nick Name Yea it tells you what gear you're in in the dash
FlyinGato great news , how about the SI , does it show what gear you’re in on the screen ?
I don't think the Si has this, but I shall verify when I review it soon.
FlyinGato GREAT ! Cant wait till i heard from u !
Make the Switch Michelin x-ice 3 best Winter tires I've found...plus it will be fun in the Snow. Oh try a different flywheel, it might help
I'm thinking about putting all seasons on the WRX and run it in the winter instead. As for the lighter flywheel, I want to try the ECU tune first, just waiting for Ktuner to come out.
Some body side moldings would look cool on that R
You think so? like on the doors?
FlyinGato yes, have it on my sport! Protects those four doors against any dings.
FlyingGato, not counting anything else just the driving fun, is this more fun than s2000?
Is there a lot of outside noise in the cabin?
quite a bit, but it is a performance car.
FlyinGato I find that in my 2014 civic as well
Honestly I wonder when Honda will drop the type r from the USA like they did with the Integra Type R.
I don't see them doing that for a couple more years
What about 5-4 lockout? Is it still bothering you?
+Jakub Smoczyński hi there, I just saw your message on civicx, yes it's still happening a lot, haven't caught it on video on a while hence why I didn't mention it, but as the temperatures drop I'm getting more and more lockouts
Can you add more series on the tire giving the fact that its a 20" mags?
Yea
Have you been to Tail of the Dragon in NC ? I think you'd enjoy the "million" twists and turns!
What wheel and tire size do you have on your 18 inch setup? I’m picking my gorgeous Red R-0626 tomorrow and need to buy some winter tires ASAP. Thanks!
Hey Dylan, tires are 245/40R18 Sumitomo HTR A/S P02, wheels are 18x8 with +45mm offset.
oh, and congrats on your Type R!!
Did you get the transmission issue resolved?? I’m looking at buying a 2018 next week. Please get back to me... thanks
Great vid man!
I did, haven't had a grind since
Thanks for the quick reply, can’t wait to get some seat time!
what did you do to fix it?
I think gear grinds have always been notorious even with the SI, it's whats making me lean towards an RS =/
+AguyNamedHorse I think the regular WRX with a tune is making pretty good sense right about now...
best looking car ive seen. Looks like the gti autobahn for me fam, but still contemplating my man
That gti has an amazing interior
in the winter, do you put on winter tires bro ?
Hey beautiful car. I just got my type R 3 weeks ago and I want to know where did you get your rims and tires? I live upstate NY so I want to get all season tires now for the winter. Thanks in advance
Hey bud, head to Tire Rack, they have great packages
you dont downshift to hear your engine on the highway....thats called over reving and its ruining your engine...leads me to think the grind is you too
Honda engines love being revved, my S2000 and Prelude love it!
Type Rs aren't worth it considering how much cheaper you can build a faster Honda yourself, 10gen type R has a k20 turbo making 300ish horsepower, u can turbo a 7, 8 ,9th gen civic si with the k20/k24 and make same or more power than a 10gen Type R for way way less than a new 10gen , 30k for a turbo k20 car is a rip off
was that your traction light flashin like a christmas light?! ^_^
+WorBroCruz yup! Lol poor front tires
If you spin the tires like that in a RWD drive car and you aren't that good of a driver you are going to crash. There's plenty of compilations on youtube showing just that. i wish stock, it sounded more like the 'stang bullitt bro !
12:00-12:30 watch out of kangaroo in Australia hehe
Ey Gato. This GataMeLiga. If you ever want to review my Si and me review your Type R on each other's channel's lets link up! Great vid!
What up GatameLiga! I watched your content good stuff! I already reviewed you generation Si unfortunately, but I'm still down to collab at some point
Just let me know brother.
wish the dash was analog my man
But is it worth ?.......jajaja jokes you pretty much say it . I like them Windies..nice area

Ayyyoo
What up!
disliked because 3 months is not long term. post a review now

BmW hat and Honda civic.... rice rice Baby !

Learn how to shift... seriously
Been driving manuals for 15 years, never had an issue. After fixing the transmission, my Type R no longer grinds, either.
FlyinGato did you actually find a solution to the grind?... i have been hesitant to pull the trigger because of this one issue
looks like my gaming mouse
12 minutes wasted. You take forever to get to the point.

0-60 is only one part that makes a car good. the Civic Type R is way more fun and practical to drive. on tight corners and long trips/races
Still sounded like shit.... Still looks like shit.
