  • Ariel Diaz, CEO of Boundless Learning, makes the case that educational curriculum is upside-down, and explains why starting with big, bold ideas could be the next big thing in education. Learn more about Ariel Diaz at www.boundless.com and TEDxCambridge at www.tedxcambridge.com.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This inversion approach has been tried many times on a narrow scale, and it often
goes wrong, particularly in high schools. End result is students don't do well on the SAT/ACT/GRE, and lose the advantages of focus on a narrow technical subject.
Typical detail-only teaching is a disaster, but if it's merged with brief "inverted" material,
motivated learning of narrow subjects is optimized. One key is to start with
detailed examples of how the subject being covered is used in applications.
