  • The 3rd movement of Terje Rypdal`s Symphony no. 2, "The New Era" (Opus no. 11, 1978). Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Per Dreyer, cond., Palle Mikkelborg as soloist. Aired on NRK Radio in 1978. Rypdal was nominated for the very prestigious Nordic Council Music Award in 1978 for this symphony. It was planned for an ECM release, but it never happened.     Damn, this guy knows a lot. I can't think of anyone since Ellington who's tried to cross jazz with the classical tradition the way Rypdal has, and Rypdal clearly is far more familiar with the classics than Ellington. He straddles the line between avant-garde and accessible quite professionally.

      I will soon post the entire Symphony, the 2nd mvt blends even more than the 4rth.
