About fifteen years ago, I attended IVFDF - a student-ish weekend folk dance festival hosted at a different university each year. This particular year's hosts used some of the university's own facilities for the event (as they had in the past). Since the last time that university had hosted, there had been a change of management in the university catering department, and, while the organisers had warned them that they were expecting about a thousand hungry people that weekend, the catering department had, apparently, discounted that warning, because they ran dry on food and had to scramble for more supplies.
It's difficult for facilities people to get things right - event organisers are often less experienced and will tend to misjudge the actual demand for their event, so a convention center that relies on organisers' projections will frequently be over- or under-booked. But that does mean that when an event comes along that the organisers correctly expect to be an outlier, the convention center may not take that information seriously enough.

@@michaeljacob3732 no, but we do it with just about everything. The fact people were getting MARRIED at the Rat Shaped Hole in Brooklyn, for example. The level of acknowledgement of the people around us just really seems to be on even more of a sharp decline with Americans than elsewhere

Yeah, Kickstarter had metrics too, LOL, until the Cosmere came to town.🤣 I remember the Words of Radiance tour, and the bookstore lady hesitating at me collecting message cards for you for that scrapbook (remember that? we got over 100 cards in Dayton!). Maybe she was used to book events for romance novels or current events books or who knows what. But by the time you arrived, she was so excited about Stormlight that she was leading the festivities! It just takes non-SFF folks a while to catch on & for sure the Salt Palace people will figure it out.

Sanderson team should put the tickets on sale FIRST, then do all the hotel/airplane con-rate stuff. If you can't get a ticket to attend, hotel and flight don't mean a damn thing.
I did not call, harass, petition, or reach out to Salt Palace in any way. That being said, SCREW THEM. I had already booked my con rate hotel, had a hold on plane tickets, and was just waiting for the last piece of the puzzle to drop into place. Because I got on 1.25 hours after the tickets went on sale and they were already sold out, I had to cancel all that and our family's vacation together to SLC. Brandon may want to have a good relationship with them, but until they move Stormlight Archive release con years to some other convention space, I'm done with this hunger games. I think its inevitable they'll have to move the SLA release years to somewhere with more space, Salt Palace isn't large enough even if they got the entire convention center.
Also, I don't want to hear a word from them about all the cool things they may do at the con, they already made sure the rest of us would be excluded with how they've rolled this out, so don't rub Salt Palace in the wound. 😠
I understand wanting them to get a bigger venue so more can attend, but how is it the venue or the con's fault that you chose to book travel and accommodations before getting tickets? Just because flights and hotels are available before tickets go on sale doesn't mean you have to go ahead and book them.
You probably didn’t watch his last weekly update. If you had flights then you can message him and he will give you a ticket. He had some set aside for his friends and was going to give them to people who booked instead.
In regards to the hotel be for the convention tickets, that’s actually a requirement that Salt Palace had for him to increase the ticket amount. He had to have a certain amount of hotel rooms for them to increase from 6,000 tickets to 7,500 this year. He probably could have communicated better, but he was doing this in accordance with what Salt Palace asked. From what I know after attending several work conventions this is pretty standard for most venues, like it or not.
@@sleepopeepo First, get TF out with your attitude of "It's all your own fault really" Clearly even Sanderson doesn't feel that way, from all the cleanup they're trying to to do, including giving people who have non-refundable flights tickets to come. They messed up, the venue messed up, this happens because Dragonsteel is still young and inexperienced in the con world.
Second, to get con rate anything, you MUST book as soon as it's available, its just like these tickets in its own way. When the hotels release their con-rate block, you book within the day or you miss out, that's how it works. The difference is, if you miss booking con-rate, the hotel still has tons of rooms! You can still stay at that hotel (for more $$) or another hotel and go to your event. It's not like if you miss booking con-rate hotel you suddenly can't go to the convention.
Tickets to the convention preempt everything else. If you can't get a ticket, don't bother with the other crap. The people who paid for flights, or paid a hold fee for a flight? They're screwed because Dragonsteel puts EVERYTHING else out BEFORE the tickets are available, when it should be the opposite. Sell or create a reserve list for con tickets, THEN release hotel con-rate information, con flight suggestions, whatever. The only conventions where it works to put stuff out in the order Dragonsteel did is A) Cons that will never sell out, or B) Cons that do not cap attendance, like Dragoncon.

You make sure you have your ticket *before* you bother with getting flights or hotel, especially if non-refundable. I did that last year and same this year. I won't be booking my flights until a few months out (it's cheaper that way) and I won't be booking hotels until they release an outline of schedule so I know how many nights I want to be there. Even including the con rates at hotels, there are plenty of cheaper options and downtown SLC has excellent public transport, so there's no rush to get one of the preferred hotels. It was your decision to book things before being sure you had tickets. I really don't see how that's anyone else's fault, much less the venue.
@@Panamaniac3D I did watch it, I cancelled everything as soon as I could that day. I didn't prepay or get a nonrefundable flight so I'm glad he did that but it doesn't effect me.
Regarding SP ticket number - Bureaucracy may be an inviolate law of nature but the exact shape of that bureaucracy is NOT. Sanderson's team could have done a pre-registration of some sort, and gone to SP with a pre-registration list of 12,000 names and said hey, we have this many pre-registrations we need more. They could have listed the number of spaces they were guaranteed to get a long time ago, and then when they sold out in an hour, told SP what happened and tried to get more space then. Months ago. Before it was booked by someone else. Or agreed to prepay for X space with additional deposits. If Dragonsteel was confident they'd need a huge amount of tickets and more space, maybe because of, you know, a preregistration list, they could have offered to pay additional money or the full fee for all space they want to book. It puts more risk on them, but it's not really a risk if they knew they would sell enough to be worth it, which they did already.
The shape of a business deal is whatever two parties want it to be, and this one CERTAINLY could have been different. Sanderson's entire team is probably swamped with all the other stuff going on, book, Backerkit, etc, and this didn't get pushed like it could and should have been.
