My grandparents house was in Annerley, running down off Ipswich Road. Eventually after my fathers death, my mum sold the house. Full quarter acre block with 2 street access, so quite a valuable block. It was bought by a fellow who was going to demolish and build medium density housing. He insisted on survey. The surveyor found the uphill boundary was correct but the downside boundary was quite a bit further than the fence, actually half-way across neighbours driveway They were miffed about this and got their own surveyor. Turns out, the mistake exhoed all the way down the street. Subdivision done by a young city council surveyor called Clem Jones!
Thanks for sharing Marianne but don't give up all of your secrets. 😀 There are a number of "Localities" around Brisbane that aren't suburbs aren't there? There are two in my area such as Lindum and Doboy and the one you mentioned that I love, "Frogs Hollow". If I'd known one of those guys with the name Anzac he'd be nicknamed "Bikkie" Love your stuff !!!
Very interesting about the lottery for ANZAC houses - I similar scheme could work for building houses for public housing. Could you leave the still photos on the screen a little longer so we can look at the details? 😊
Love your work! FYI, Thompson Estate is also still the name of one of Brisbane’s leading athletics clubs, based in Carina. The full name is Thompson Estate Eastern Suburbs Athletics Club after a merger in the 80s (I think).
I absolutely love the tv mini series, A Town Like Alice, with Brian Brown. I like when Brian's character explains to Gordon Jackson's character "about winning the Golden Casket". I did not realise that the lottery was used to specifically fund widows houses.
Ooh I didn’t realise that had a reference in it! Only some of the draws were used for Anzac cottages, the profits were also used for other charitable causes. But I had no idea about any of it until I started the research!

Oh my gosh!! 😂 What a wonderful Brisbane story! Thanks so much for sharing!!
Grew up in Camp Hill. First suburb to be fully sewered, Camp Hill. Where did Clem Jones live? Camp Hill of course@@thehousedetective

I have thought the same thing! Bring it back I say! Will do with the still photos!! Thanks for the feedback!
Absolutely fascinating Marianne. Thanks for posting.
My pleasure!

Oh wow! I don’t know that! Thanks! I came across some pics of the TE Harriers sports club during my research- wonder if that’s how it started??
@@thehousedetective For sure!
You're awesome! New subscriber. 😊 (60 years a Briso, and love anything to do with its history/geography). Ty!!
Welcome aboard! Thanks so much!! 😊
I got all excited to see Crystal Palace Dinosaurs in a park near Annerley... dammit wrong map of Annerley. 😆

Wouldn't it be novel if Government used a scheme like his to help out the homeless these days.
I know! I think it would be fantastic! The Golden Casket was later taken over by the QLD government and used to fund hospitals etc.
Anzac would be a good name for a dog :)
Oh my gosh yes!! Great name! I’m totally stealing that for my next pup! 🐾
Moorooka!???
Unexpected hey!
Is Annerley spelt properly, or did you have to escape from that pub, at the corner of Ipswich Road and Annerley Road, while sober?
👍
@geoffmccoll4640 what the hell does that mean?
