    Just a quick tip for anyone doing this at home on their driveway. ALWAYS remove the FILL plug before removing the DRAIN plug and opening up the trans. These fill plugs are in very tight and are very liable to strip out. Last thing you want is to drain the oil, do the job and then not be able to fill it back up and then you cant move the car to take it to a shop to get the plug out.

      Should be applicable to all fluid holding reservoirs in a vehicle: Engine, transmission, differential, brake master cylinder, radiator etc. Fill plug released first.

      @railtrolley Correct 👌 I was mainly speaking in relation to the video. I'm surmising that anyone watching this video will be wanting to do this to their own trans. In my car (BMW E60) their really isn't much room to get to the fill plug. So if you strip it out, you'll have no chance of getting a drill in their to drill it out so the only other options are to try a T50 bolt extractor or hammer and chisel it out. Failing that, you'll have to drop the trans to drill it out

      The fill plug on my X5 seemed to be stuck pretty tight. I could just feel the 8mm internal hex beginning to deform when I bore down on it. I stopped at that point. I invested in a 'special' hex bit set by Wera, and the 8mm in that set gripped that plug much more tightly than a regular hex bit. The fill plug let go with a SNAP! I bought a fill plug with a conventional 17mm external hex drive to replace it with.

      @@tempest411 Good idea. Should stop future access problems with the fill plug. On my Falcon, I had to remove the oxygen sensor. Positioned opposite the ZF fill plug. Good acess after removal. Also very tightly done up too. Overtight plug seems intentional by ZF to ensure the plebs don't try to service the transmission themselves.

    I got and awesome deal on a 2006 LR3 v6 (U.S.) and have been looking at the Land Rover manual for my vehicle and nothing has lined up. I randomly came across your video trying to verify sensor placements because the Land Rover Manual does not match anything. I contacted Land Rover direct, verified frame, body and engine numbers and was sent the "proper" manual and no luck. The cross member placement on this frame lines up with mine. FYI, I was looking for the Camshaft Position Sensor which is top dead center at the rear of the engine before the bell housing; same as a Range Rover. According to the manual and Land Rover , its accessible on the bottom in a deep recess in the center before the transfer case. The more I dig into this vehicle, I should be looking at a Range Rover manual.

When I start it back up, I can drive it for several yards & then the p0501 pops up & the trans disengages. Does this sound like the, “losing pressure” you were describing? Do you believe this service will fix my issue? I realize the p code points elsewhere & I’ve ordered new speed sensors. I’ve also cleaned the TCU and it looks great.

    A great video of your work but i have a question regarding refilling the fluid. After you refill it and the fluid comes out you reinstall the plug and run the car and cycle through the gears (foot on the brake ) . While the car is still running the temperature of the fluid is supposed to be 40 degrees celsius or 104 degrees fahrenheit and only at that time should the plug be removed and additional fluid be added till it spills out (as per ZF)

      Also transmission should be level at the mating surface with pan, not vehicle. In some vehicles(ram 1500) the ZF transmission sits at an angle and rear tires have to be ~9" higher than front to level properly.

    What about resetting adaptations on that trans and doing a relearn procedure?
    Seems crazy to open everything up and do new fluid at $20/qt if you are not going to replace the 4 tube seals and solenoids (only about $400) at the same time.
    In 20K miles, another trans problem will have you opening it all up again and paying for 7qts of oil + new trans pan + labour. This is why these $80K trucks can be had used for $10K.
    Buy once, cry once!

    • @a2zautomasters862
      @a2zautomasters862  Год назад

      Resetting the adaptation won’t solve this problem for sure. It’s case by case, if I feel it needs it or will need it in the near future I change it, we don’t cut corners. If it’s not broken don’t fix it. Btw you don’t have to replace the fluid and pan every time you open the transmission. Thank you

    • @any0n378
      @any0n378 Год назад +2

      @@a2zautomasters862 I mentioned resetting adaptations after the work you have done. I agree that there is no point in doing it if you haven't changed anything. Those transmissions adapt to conditions, so without resetting adaptations, old values will be stored. Best practice according to ZF and the BMW crowd.
      I understand that you dont want to change parts unnecessarily, but for my money, I would do it all whilst in there. Rubber is the same for the bridge seal and the tube seals, so if one has gone, the others wont be far behind. The solenoids are also known to fail, so worth the extra as insurance. Same reason why you dont replace only 1 wheel bearing.

Sometimes Debri get stock in on of the solenoids inside the valve body. You should definitely try doing it and change all of those seals/ bushings and clean valve body good.
