    I hope to play a TTRPG like this, one of these days. I've had fun with stuff like Mount and Blade and Medieval Dynasty. Although my specific interest are in the early medieval period; around the fall of the Western Roman Empire but I'm down for anything.

    One of the best parts of the domain management rules from the OS companion is the annual event section, especially for a party that includes a members of the family and other characters that serve the house. It can lead to all kinds of adventure ideas.

    good video - i need to pick up old school companion part 1 - have part two for the adventures. I think ACKS by Alex Macris has some good rules on domain play also. PS: some very sad news , the great artist Russ Nicholson passed away. An excellent illustrator of fighting fantasy books, warhammer fantasy, Fiend Folio, DCC, etc etc - a true original. Hope someone does a video about his work

    I’d like to see you do a Japanese samurai/ninja book, maybe in the Sengoku period. I’d be a re-skin for your rules, and a chance to write some neat history, too. Perfect setting for abstract domain rules.

      There's already a lot of Japan-themed games; if I do an Asian setting, it'll more likely be Song Dynasty China.

      @@InternetHydra There were a couple OSR games, Chanbara and Shinobi & Samurai iirc. I remember Sengoku and Bushido from back in the day as well. Not sure I'd run any as is or just cannibalize them for my system of choice.
      @Kasimir Urbanski - RPGPundit I'd love a Song Dynasty book, it would synchronize excellently with Sword & Caravan. Much Taoist magic could be used in a Japanese setting as well as much magic originates from Chinese practices in Japan. At the same time, a small booklet of accurate Shinto or any otherwise unique Japanese magics that arose could be nice. If PC's get so far as Great Song, weebs in many groups are going to try and cross the pirate infested Sea of Japan in order to find the legendary gold of Zhipangu.

      For what it's worth, I am working on this - not historically authentic, though, and it's purely a hobby effort because I like oriental adventures. I made the OA reference manual on DMs guild and wanted to convert that so it has no WOTC IP. Fantasy Sengoku Japan makes sense. Though, because it's 5e, it will be more NIOH than Nobunaga's Ambition 😁

    I mean it's hard to beat Pendragon. Your stuff has some Pendragon DNA, but I don't care for the zany elements, but there is A LOT a do like, so I keep buying them and using them. Had no idea you were on RUclips before today. It was hilarious that you couldn't find something in your own book. Layout isn't your strong suit, but the content is fantastic.

    I have been leaning more on abstract solutions myself for similar and other reasons when dealing with sects in my campaigns. Presently fiddling with some sect building and management approaches to address stuff that have come up in my wuxia sessions. One benefit of the abstract approach is you can fold in things like expenditures and projects so you aren't tracking every penny the sect spends (dealing with financial resources has always been a sticking point when this has come up for me)

    Will AI open a new age of simulationism in domain play? Virtual reality of interconnected factors enabling all sorts of abstract and creative elements and actions could be possible.

  • @solomani5959
    @solomani5959 Год назад +3

    I've always struggled with domain play. I find it too much effort for me (the DM), and the PCs have no interest in the BECMI-style minutia of it all. Having said that, your more abstract version is brilliant. That may be a fit for my campaign; I'll need to re-read that section in your book. Thanks.

    • @RPGPundit
      @RPGPundit  Год назад +2

      Yes, well that is the main problem I focused on in the video: that it's a lot of time and book-keeping often for just one player's benefit. Thus, abstraction helps make it more viable for playability.

    • @RPGPundit
      @RPGPundit  Год назад

      I think that there could be situations where one is better than the other. ACKS is more detailed, for example, which means that it could be better for some campaigns and worse for others.

    The commercial failure of Birthright set back domain play, honestly. Pathfinder had both Ultimate Campaign, which I like, and a couple of different adventure paths that go into domain play.
    I own ACKS, looking forward to ACKS II. I own Pundit's books, etc. unfortunately, my players don't share the same love of domain play that I have.
