“Shovelware” the term/title usually intended when an exceeding quantity of items are bundled together to substitute and overcome a decline in quality. This is not the case in the video above; hearing quality music paired with Shovelware is quite peculiar; especially with the video game series Melty Blood, one of the boldest experimental soundtracks in fighting video-game history. The main composers being Raito (Masaru Kuba) and Kate (Keita Haga). The first iteration of Melty Blood as a fighting game arrived in 2002; technically it’s very first release was in the year 2000 as a visual novel. The final version of Melty Blood as a fighting game arrived in 2009 as “Melty Blood: Actress Again". I wish more fighting games took more daring chances with sound. I can not overstate enough how unique and different it’s soundtrack is compared to other video games of the same genre. It is my favorite fighting video game soundtrack of all time; yes, not Tekken, Mortal Kombat, Virtua Fighter, King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown/Spirits, Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, Soul Calibur, Guilty Gear, nor Marvel vs. Capcom; but instead Melty Blood sits high atop the throne as king. Here are a few tracks to possibly sway others who think otherwise. A main reason is licensing issues often put older games in limbo, making them unavailable for re-release on newer hardware. The video-game series “No One Lives Forever” comes to mind, which is a shame; really good series by Monolith. The original game came out in the year 2000. Abondonware in reference to video-games can also simply refer to end of life thus becoming obsolete. This can accelerate if the hardware fails to perform or sell well. In the video game universe two infamous examples come to mind, Nintendo’s Virtual Boy and Tiger Electronics' R-Zone. They both shared similarities in all red visuals/graphics, debuted in 1995, and were abruptly discontinued in a year or two. The main difference is the quality of sound. Virtual Boy, regardless the limited game library actually had some memorable tracks. A favorite of mine is “Temple of Nightmare” from the game Jack Bros. ruclips.net/video/_W-RyPegJeA/видео.html The R-Zone, oh man is it the antithesis of good music; because of the limited hardware sound suffered tremendously. It is easily among the worst video game music of all time. R-Zone more than deserves to be Abandonware. This is not hyperbole, absolutely some of the worst music/sound ever conceived; you’ve been warned… listen at one’s own discretion... ruclips.net/video/Th243fRMbqo/видео.html It will be interesting to see if “Abandonware” shows up as a title in the near or distant future of this youtube video series. I have to say, very stylistic visuals, though a more minimalist approach, it really brings it all together. A nice touch too of letting the songs transition over each other during the end and beginning of songs. Cool upload, much appreciated. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.
