  • Did you ever wonder how the beautiful dogs that are featured on the television coverage won the right to represent their breed? This is what you DON'T see on TV. Experienced breeder gives you a close-up view of the breed rings at this world famous dog show during the day, when the Best of Breed winners compete against all the others of the same breed, for the right to come back at night for the Group title.

    Lots of good looking Blenheims, but we don’t have to tell Jamba.

    Thank you Charlie for sharing this video. I think Westminster show is what we have in Europe Crufts? Am I right? I always wanted to see how Westminster show is really. I went to Crufts with my Bolognese more than 10 years ago. 🎉

      Westminster is kind of the US equivalent of Crufts, but it's much smaller. There are usually about 2500 entries in Westminster, but Crufts is nearly 10 times that. We have nothing even approaching that size here in the US. I went to Crufts about 15 years ago, and I was absolutely blown away by the scale of it.

    Always a fan of Ted's judging! Love this peak into the "behind the scenes" of the show.. there's so much we don't get to see from home!

      If you go to the Westminster website and look at the breed competition videos from Ring 9 Monday morning, you can spot me standing there. Gray sport coat.

    V interesting. Being from England I'm not familiar with the Westminster show. Seems to be like our Crufts. I'm sure Jamba will fo well next year.

      It's sort of our equivalent of Crufts, but nowhere near as big. There is no dog show in the US that even comes close to the magnitude of Crufts.

      @@chaskat35 really? I'd have thought a country as large as US would have much bigger, and more shows like Crufts.

      We have 3 major national dog shows each year. The largest is the AKC National Championship with about 3500 entries, 2nd is Westminster with around 2500, and the 3rd is the National Dog Show (a Thanksgiving tradition) with about 2000 dogs entered. Contrast those with Crufts, which usually has upwards of 25,000 dogs entered.
      Maybe it's because the NEC is such a huge venue, and can accomodate all those dogs and handlers, as well as about 150,000 visitors. Westminster was held in Madison Square Garden for years, which is cramped at best. A while ago, they moved the breed competition to the West Side piers in New York, and the groups still competed at the Garden - that helped quite a bit. If they keep the show at the tennis center where it was this year for the first time, there's room to spread out, so it may grow.
      I visited Crufts about 15 years ago, and I was overwhelmed by the vastness of it. LOTS more good shopping than what I'm accustomed to seeing in this country - I have several Crufts souvenirs in my home today. I watched the breed competition for Cavaliers, where they had both a dog and a bitch ring operating. This year's breed competion at Westminster (28 Cavaliers) pales in comparison to the hundreds at Crufts.
      The good news is that what these shows lack in volume they make up in quality. Westminster is usually a Champions only show; when it is open to others, they must have earned at least one major win to qualify.

    I am looking forward to attending our big “High Desert” series of 4 days of shows here in Albuquerque over this weekend.

    Do you think Westminster prefers Blenheim over tricolor Cavies?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  Год назад +2

      Generally speaking, you'll see more Blenheims (by far) than any other color at ANY dog show. It's mostly genetics; because the genes that produce the Blenheim color are recessive, whenever you breed two Blenheims you get all Blenheims. That's not the case for any other color. And that also makes for a larger Blenheim gene pool, which only produces even more of them. As a result, the majority of nice show Cavaliers are Blenheims.
