It really is a shame there is so little aftermarket support for 'ol FatNasty'. I know the the 8.1 is one hell of a workhorse, but the raw displacement of this engine deserves better IMO. GOOD TO SEE someone put some love into one, if nothing else, showing what they 'could' be with a bit of ingenuity, fab and a bit of dyno-time!
I have this engine from off a fan boat. It’s heavy asf. Broke my engine hoist. The parts are insanely expensive and hard to find. I could only find one aftermarket performance manufacturer so I just bought an LSX

I hunt every year out of a Chevy 2500 with the 8.1 and a 5 speed Alison, absolutely love it. Update: Truck was stolen last week, thiefs ended up totaling the truck running from the cops. Male ended up getting caught shortly after the wreck and the female is still on the loose.

Lets not forget the 8.1 is a low rpm gas burning truck engine meant for the medium duty market, and never did nor currently has a large aftermarket support. In other words we've yet to see the full potential of these engines.

Gonna be doing a whole lot of custom work to pull it off, like these guys did. It's worth it though, to have a truck no one else has on the road. People will be doing double-takes at the 496 badges

Thats a good number at the wheels, but if you have a shortbed you’d better get the weight distributed to the rear, or your in for some surprise off-road adventures when the wheels break lose at 70mph

Are the heads stock, swapped or ported? I've always been curious about 8.1 builds and how they're approached since they're not common in the aftermarket. Very cool truck!
I never knew this engine existed. I love my Dakota R/T and want to keep the Magnum motor, but if for some reason I ever swap it I know exactly what I'm putting in it now.

That tiny, sealed airbox is killing power trying to feed basically an 11L engine. He needs a split intake pipe with 2 huge filters. There's plenty of room. A 3.4-4L Whipple on lower boost should be a better match.
Beautiful truck. Ol' fat nasty's are torque monsters, and sound great. Im just gonna be real though, and take all the flak I get from this. You can make these numbers with a 5.3 or 6.0. These big displacement engines just sadly have trouble getting enough air in to fill the cylinder to its full potential. Even if you get it to that point its chugging enough fuel to make a street build very impractical...
The 8.1 isn't known for being able to handle much power with the stock internals. An iron block 4.8/5.3/6.0 with ring gap is know to handle 1,200/1,300/1,550hp with twin turbos, H/C/I.
The 7.3 is getting out of the gate aftermarket support. Towing may be it's intended purpose, but it's proving a bit more versatile than the 8.1 already
Didn't they do a mag article on this truck back when it was new? It was either Sport Truck on Street Truck that the article was in...before the supercharger.
I would expect a lot more with a "built" motor and forced induction. Regardless of how conservative the time may be. Those are N/A numbers for a built 8.1. willing to bet it's a completely stock engine. If that were the case (which I'm willing to bet, just from looking at the rpm range on the Dyno graph), that it is completely stock. If so, then that would explain the low numbers.
I'd be willing to bet from your comment that you are def and blind and know nothing about engines. But even Stevie Wonder can tell that is not a stock cam just by listening to the idle.

So when I hear built, I'm already thinking, that in an n/a setup, it should put down some hefty numbers. Then added boost should bump those numbers up close to %100 or more of that n/a output.
But saying this is a built engine with boost I would say not. Maybe rebuilt with boost, in which these numbers would be more believable. And in this setup, it would very much so be street friendly and very driveable as a daily ride. Which is a good thing. It's power that would be used in an operating range that gets used the most.

But you wouldn't have the monster low/mid range punch that this combination gives you. That's like half the reason they built this. If you want a screaming procharged motor, go with an LS.
I have an 02 2500hd with 8.1/Allison 5speed….only 100k miles. Headers exhaust new plugs/wires, new fuel filter, getting 55psi at rail and still is gutless as can be. Beautiful truck but not sure what the deal is. No DTCs starts and runs fine but it is so gutless my 5.3 nearly puts it to shame. I get 6-7 mpg in the city. I’m so disappointed. Anyone have any thoughts ???

You literally have to do nothing to the engine but change the cam and throw a helping of boost at it. It doesn't get any easier.
