- Ricky Skaggs released Highways & Heartaches in September 1982, and the album quickly moved to the number 1 spot on the Country Album chart, and spawned 3 number 1 singles. Besides being a well polished example of Ricky's Bluegrass/Country hybrid style, it also spearheaded the neo-traditionalist movement that brought an end to the more pop oriented "Urban Cowboy" era. The album featured Ricky's crack road band, and a couple of cuts with studio heavy hitters Lloyd Green, Jerry Kroon, Weldon Myrick and Joe Osborn. Besides the incendiary Telecaster playing of Ray Flacke, Skaggs himself burned on the albums closer, "One Way Rider," using a unique instrument built by Joe Glaser, a 5-string, bender equipped, Mandocaster. Today we look at the impact of the album, and we look at the Glaser built Mandocaster.

I was always a Rock and Roller. Laughed at Country and Bluegrass. But when I heard Ricky Skaggs' Highways and Heartaches I instantly went crazy for Country and Bluegrass. Ray Flacke is my favorite Country guitar player to this day. I saw them in 1984 in Norfolk, Virginia. The Whites opened for them and that concert was over the top! Ricky is my favorite still today!
So cool! I actually have a miniature Les Paul, built by Dave Petschulat, at the picking parlor, which was part of the now Glaser guitars...and the same time frame! I have spoke to Joe about it, and he and Petschulat must've worked together on some of these projects. Joe has played a big part in engineering and supplying gear to these top artist, that have made a 'big mark' in country music! Thanks Joe....and thanks Zak for keeping the history alive!
I have the last mandocaster that Joe made and I have it signed by Ricky Skaggs.
Do you know how many were built ?

Aloha Zac. Neat little mandolin. Mahalo
Still have my 80s guitar mags where Ricky features in ads for GHS strings ... "Boomers on the Mandocaster for punch and power."
We need a double neck mandolin with 8 string and 5 string neck, and I'm building it.
Maybe my favorite country album.
Great job Zac, as usual, you nailed it! Only one small clarification: We certainly did splice 2" tape quite a bit to help get the best rhythm section takes, but as you know "comping" solos (including Ray Flacke's and most all others really) was done not by cutting tape but by simply recording multiple overdub passes on the 24 track and then choosing the best pieces and bouncing the resulting composite to an open track. Ray's could get particularly interesting. He's such a creative and unorthodox player that we sometimes did take liberties with what was actually possible for anybody (including him) to play in a single take.
That Glaser Mandocaster is super cute...You need tiny hands for that fretboard ! !!! 😊 Great history as always...
I always wonder how Ray is doing. He didn't look to good on your last interview. Maybe a bad cold. Great Player 🎸 🎶 ❤️
Awesome Zac. This is Dale from Patreon. I really like this. Keep it up
