OK, Doc. Here's a few things you should know about this medication. I was placed on it over thirty years ago. In the first year I gained more than twice my normal weight. I reached 101 kg, when I was only 48 kg, It cost me my gallbladder and appendix in the first nine months. I was on that awful stuff for a further 12 years, my doctor wouldn't change my medication because I wasn't having seizures. I was 39 years old at the time and I couldn't find a doctor to help me lose weight, all my hair fell out and I shook so badly I couldn't write my name. In the end it was a chemist that told me, "No one is taking this stuff anymore, go and find a neurologist to get you off this stuff." Because I'd lost my gallbladder, it took twenty years for a doctor to realise It had affected my thyroid as well. I'm now seventy-two, and still my hair is mostly missing. I'm on a carnivore diet because it's all I'm able to eat now. I thought that medication had been removed from production. At least It certainly should have been. From Australia.
I don’t have neither Epilepsy nor Bipolar Disorder which Sodium Valproate is usually used for. Even, I have been taking Sodium Valproate since early 2019. They definitely help stabilising my Emerging Mood Disorder (caused by my previous antidepressant Escitalopram). Escitalopram gave me horrible side effects, especially tension energy, jaw clenching and sleepless nights. Fortunately, Sodium Valproate disappeared my jaw clenching a long time ago and it has been working well.

I'm 26y/o, been on valproate for 2w now, I'm bipolar but never had any psychotic break so it took 25 years to get diagnosed. I felt a significant improvement when using valproic acid alongside fluoxetine. I don't have angry issues nor lethargy anymore. Only side effect that I've noticed is that now I'm hungrier. Thank god for these medicines.

I have a question please abot Valproate, if a patient with OCD and depression and aggression (kind of Border Personality Disorder occured after ECT sessions) lasts a few hours each day (not mania nor hypomania), he is on Anafranil, Zoloft, Seroquel .... I know it's a tough question, but do you advise to add Valproate (Debakine) or Lamotergine (Lamictal) to treat impulsivity and aggression?

@@howtomedicate he did ECG and echo and it was normal and the cardiologist said it could be From the drug but the neurologist said it is not caused by the drug?
@@Gg-mv4qs does your brother have any other symtoms besides eplisepy? Did he do a genetic testing in the past ? Was he born normal? You may want to bring your brother to see a endocrinologist possible signs of hypothyroidism.
Yes, it does. Especially that he’s taking it with leveteracitam (keppra). I was once on both, had to quit Keppra because we noticed I got the worst side effects from it. Switched to Valproate exclusively and increased my dose to cater to the Keppra being cut. All is good now.

I could not find bradycardia as a side effect of Valproic Acid. Maybe there is an other explanation for the bradycardia.

No
I took it for twelve years, it's the worst drug I've ever had to take but the liver damage is reversible if you have to take it.

Yes for individual manic episodes but not approved by the FDA for bipolar longterm
